My REL s5/10 pair should do a decent job of it.

If you have the RELs already, its certainly worth a try.
It will be interesting to know if you feel they have the coconuts to keep up…

A simple SPL vs frequency chart would be helpful, but I can’t find one.

Worst case you could double or triple stack subs (although I would just buy/make better subs due to the expense)….or possibly repurpose the RELs to fill room nulls/smooth bass response.

Potentially not relevant, but many years ago, I ran two Velodyne DD10s.
They were ok for music, but lacked authority down low to satisfy. Definitely not a sub I would partner with 15inch mains, if low compression high output was needed. Big bass notes and large transients would noticeably compress as protection and limiting kicked in. Maybe the RELs offer more excursion and output.

From there I moved to DIY dual 18s,  they did everything better… room filling bass, the capability to hit super low,  low compression/not audible, super dynamic at any sane level. Well I shouldn’t say everything, as the wife certainly wasn’t as impressed. 😜

These days I prefer mains that go full range. But if I ever partnered subs with my M2s, I would naturally gravitate to dual JBL SUB18s or potentially something DIY/custom.

I have to give a big, double thumbs up to the Fyne 704s.  I've heard them on several different amps and front ends and really enjoyed them every single time.  I would need a larger listening room in order to think about buying a pair myself but if that ever occurs then they will definitely be near the top of my list.

I've heard them on the Heschl HAL 350, heard them with the Mola Mola Makua feeding the Heschl 300 power amp, heard them with some Aries Cerat DAC/Pre equipment (don't remember the exact models) feeding the Heschl 300 power amp.  Heard them with the Mola Mola pre/pwr set up.  They never disappointed.  Awesome vocals, deep and warm bass and a big, relaxing soundstage.  Love 'em, love 'em to bits.  Insert "Chefs Kiss" here.

I can't say I have any experience with the middle two speakers on your list but I have heard some previous model 802D speakers and I really did not enjoy them.  At least, mostly.

They sounded hard and bright and etched (and when I say hard, bright and etched  I mean diamond scratching across glass in a pool of acid kind of hard, bright and etched) on many amps.  They sounded quite acceptable when fed with an Anthem amp, and better again when a Plinius reference power amp was used but not good enough for me to ever consider owning a pair.  They also took a massive amount of power to get them up and moving.  I would describe them as VERY PIGGISH to drive.  Not a fan of them at all.

If vocal magic equivalent to the Tannoys is of interest to you I would recommend trying to demo a pair of Wilson Benesch floorstanders.  I've recently got my hands on a pair of ACT speakers second hand and have been very impressed with their performance.  They sound very good on the Heschl and while I have not heard big Macs myself I believe them to sound not too far removed from the sound of the Heschl HAL 350 so Wilson Benesch might be an option for you.  A much less warm sound than the Fynes though, so it may only be a maybe but I thought they deserved a mention.  Klapp have an ex demo pair available at a considerable discount.  They are an older model it's true,  but they happen to be the exact same model as mine so I can happily endorse them.

The Aries Cerat Pre and DAc you heard the 704’s with was the Helene DAC and Impera Reference 2 Pre.
I have Mark here at present doing various convolutions in HQ Player for the 702’s, 703’s and the 704’s. To say the improvement in SQ is a serious quantum improvement is no exaggeration.

Jeffro wait till you come down next time and hear the big Fyne’s now! … Man Oh Man. … 🙂

Never let it be said I missed an opportunity to stir the Fyne pot. … 😉

In all seriousness before you decide you should listen to the 703’s as well.

One thing I will say, whatever speaker you decided to buy, and your happy with the sound of them, the appearance/beauty of the speaker is also important, especially since you will be looking at them for many years to come, as the old saying goes, "I like looking at the mantelpiece as I poke the fire"

Good luck on your Quest...

I did some investigations on these as an option. Not sure they are going to be at the top of my list based on the opinion and explanation of someone I trust who has listened to them. He knows my setup pretty well, so that carries weight with me.

I do appreciate the posts though - I'd by ropeable if I missed something that fits my needs, so keep pinging this thread by all means.

I am not so sure that they look lovely.

Imposing-tick,a statement of serious intent -check. room dominance-check.

Look, I am sure they sound sublime but these are never going to disappear in any room and are IMNSHO display too much attitude.

Apologies to the majority who think they are beautiful.

I just couldn't.

Apology accepted🙂

I like the wood finish & I guess I do like a speaker that looks like it will produce some serious sound when required 😄

I reckon they look pretty superb also. More importantly they sound spectacular. All of the models punch a fair bit above their weight stock and after DSP they are just so much better.  The 703's would be my pick for a typical largish room for high spls. Of course the 704's are epic but would benefit from a bit more space between them and the walls and you if you have that . I like them all even more now after a good amount of listening over the last couple of days. The other thing is that all the setups at @GC HiFi just sound so good. Terry has really put some time into making sure the systems work as a whole and there is super synergy. Well worth popping up to Gold coast for some sun and spectacular sounds, am sure Terry would be very pleased to setup a bunch of things for you to have a listen to.

Different convolution software doing the same thing - I can understand.

But it's the comment:

... that I'm trying to understand.

just try it. You’ll see.

This discussion is well off topic. Perhaps the discussion could be explored in a new thread.

Yes it is, but the information and views which are being posted are extremely valuable to many others (such as myself), so I would love to see the discussion continue, probably on a new thread.

@El Tel is  a chilled guy who won't get upset if the discussion continues here, but maybe a new thread would be good ?

Any of the guys who are posting here who clearly know what they are talking about and have tried several different options would be a great OP.

Forgive me for posting about speakers again 🤭 but anyone have experience with Triangle? The specs and approx market position/price for their Magellan Quartuor 40th Anniversary Editions have pushed them into my awareness and maybe even on the list to audition:

https://www.trianglehifi.com/en/produit/hifi-floor-standing-speaker-magellan-quatuor-40th/

I looked into auditions of their AV range 6 months ago and there are virtually no stockist in Oz. I don't think there was any in Melbourne.

You could give Hey Now Hi Fi a call for information (and probably an audition).

Two other retailers in Victoria are Carlton Audio Visual and Tivoli Hi Fi.

Between them, you may well be able to hear a variety of speakers in the Triangle range.

I think the conversation here about HQplayer has very quickly hit the "It makes a difference/ But it cant " brick wall. For a new thread to have some broader value and longevity perhaps something like "Better sounding alternatives to Roon"  might work.

Might be a little assumptive... But close... How about: "HQplayer, or other players, are there better alternatives to Roon?"

I've been impressed by Triangle each time I've heard them. Most definitely worthy of being on your audition list.

I've met Hugo, the son of the owner of the company, a number of times at shows and he's passionate and absolutely charming.

Triangle will be at this year's show too from memory.

The other one I really rate is Fyne Vintage Fifteen. This speaker has stopped me in my tracks a number of times, and most recently at Munich this year then again in Hong Kong a couple of weeks ago. Fyne will also be at the show, but not sure which models.

Thanks, @Marc. This is giving me all the incentive I need to push hard on my physio so I can attend the show and engage fully.

Rafael seemed to be won over by the next 40th anniversary model down in the chain from the Magellan Quators in his recent review I read: https://www.stereonet.com/au/reviews/triangle-magellan-cello-40th-anniversary-review

Haven’t heard their higher end ranges but listened to a little stand mount by Triangle a few years ago and it was really good. The soundstage and bass was amazing for such a small speaker.

Would love to hear Magellan’s.
