Everyday Scotch - decanter?

Featured Replies

As I departed a job that I have had for nearly the past 27 years I was given a lovely Tom Dixon Decanter. So my intention is to fill it with an everyday go to Scotch, probably a Single Malt. Would consider blended....

What should I put in it?

Less than $100 per bottle to be considered. (That's verging on OTT for everyday I know...)

According to boy wonder son who thinks he is the Inner West of Sydney's hippest and coolest bartenders with nail polish, etc... - what ever has an ugly label dad! Not a bad point actually!

Kind regards,

Michael

Also have two of the glasses. Nice!

Aberlour A'Bunadh.   By the time it's diluted with a little water to get it down to standard drinking proof it's very close to your limit; and to my taste it's one of the best.

  • My oath that is a thumper! But bit of a struggle to get it for less than a hunned dollars... This one I recommend...it's under$...even in the ABV...around 40%...slight peaty bouquet...easy quaffi

Not sure that I understand the question (though $100 for normal drinking is luxurious by my standards).  Anyway. if it's everyday drinking then surely it isn't going to last long...

Buy a different bottle every X days and it won't take long to work out what styles you prefer and you think are good value. 🥳🥳🥳

No problem:

The question is I have a nice decanter, what shall I put in it, thinking I’d like it to be my regular drop!

Thanks for recommendations so far, some I know, some I don’t, will investigate. Have a few others on the go atm. Would love something yummy considerably less than $100 btw and would consider a blend.

If it's a day to day drinker, something to be shared, always in the mood for it, I'd get something easy like a Highland or a Speyside malt.

The Glenmorangie above is a good example, but I'd also consider Johnny Walker Green (vetted malt), Balvenie Doublewood, Dalwhinnie or even Oban 14 yo if you'd like something with some mild peat.

While I love peated whisky, it's not a decanter drink unless you are the Marlboro man and have already cooked your taste buds with cigarettes.

Ha! Have a Bottle of the Balvenie Doublewood and a Bottle of Starward Two Fold half drunk atm. Great suggestions!

Reaching for one now...

That's the spirit!

My own faves tend to be dominated by Islay drops.

While I can't imagine buying the same whiskey twice in a row, I'll concede that the idea of a 'regular tipple' does have a certain charm. Good luck and enjoy the search 👍👍

Cardhu 12 year old at $65 fom Dan's fits your bill nicely.

Others I like are Aberfeldy and Edradour.

From Dan's, I'd probably go with one of these:

https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_464436/glen-moray-15-year-old-single-malt-scotch-whisky-700ml

https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_822064/jura-10-year-old-single-malt-scotch-whisky-700ml

https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_807941/dewar-s-15-year-old-blended-scotch-whisky-700ml

Or, you could wait until Aldi has one of their 30YO blended whiskies for sale for $99 - always worth a couple of bottles.

Grab one of each of the suggestions, that will keep you going for a while. :)

As someone who's favourite drams are mortlach 16 year old and oban, I have always thought the ubiquitous johnnie black an honest easy to drink everyday drink, and much more in what I would call 'affordable'.  When on special (and it usually is) I don't believe you can go wrong for under $50.

@SPR08Y Hi Michael,

Do you prefer peated or non peated single malts? $100 is really a good budget and you have lots of options. There are a few whisky lovers here who can give you some awesome recommendations

fair enough, but the original question gets less interesting in the sub-$50 range 😃

A late afternoon dram. Bloody good one too 👍

Especially for the price, excellent value! 😋

Ta! Agree, $100 was very generous! Have had a tipple of the Jameson and not disappointed. However, might go for something a bit more complex. I think I suggested Scotch too - Jameson doesn’t fit that category… Anyway, little steps.
