I've had great experiences with CVE Electronics in Coburg, VIC
https://www.facebook.com/CveElectronics/

They've fixed traditional HiFi components and TVs for me over the years.

Always been on time, fairly priced and very knowledgeable.

They've also declined a job when they felt they could not achieve a desirable outcome.

Yes and Joseph's a real character too.

Need to have my Arcam repaired on the Sunshine Coast, pretty sure I've found a good repairer, hope to be back to this thread in a week or so with positive feedback and a recommendation

Collected my Arcam from Audiofix Warana today, haven't plugged it in yet but have to say Andrew was great to deal with. Loved the fact you talk directly to the tech fixing the gear, has a no bullshit approach and a reasonable price too. With any luck the A38 will be good to go for another 10 years!

Hi

I'm moving back to Tauranga from Melbourne in a little over a month. I have a Luxman L100 that is in need of some TLC, the left chanel made a popping sound after 15min at low level listening and cut sound from that channel. Sound came back but, I'm not keen to test again until I get an expert to take a look. Who would be my best bet for a tech? I'll be in Tauranga, but will be between Auckland  fairly regularly also would travel to Waikato, Taupo.

Cheers Dave

I know its not the popular opinion, but my experience at ClarkeAudio in Vic was pretty good. 2 phone calls (i had lots of questions), dropped off one week and picked up the next. Have to rely on memory cos no paperwork, but piles of caps replace, number of transistors, all speaker terminals were physically damaged in transit, so a custom plate and WBT terminals installed and i collected a perfectly working amp. He even waited back as i took longer than i hope to get there. He was pretty chatty, took the time to explain all he had done - the cover was off and he showed me where he had made repairs.

Amp still works perfect now. My experience was quite positive.

I've had some very good experiences with AV Concepts tech in Toowoomba, whom has repaired about three or four amps and a preamp for me over the last couple of years. Not major rebuilds but none the less has been excellent in price and turnaround.

Thoroughly recommended.

I have a couple of old Luxman amps that need some repairs. One is an L30 with concentric volume controls which has dimished volume in 1 chanel and the volume controls are scratchy. The other is a Luxman 5030 receiver and the balance control is scratchy.

I live in southern Sydney (Hurstville area) and would appreciate any recomnedations for repairers. I realise these are old units but the L30 was my first real amp. Even now I run an L5 that I have owned for longer than I care to admit.

When in Melbourne I found Tony McKay at Tivoli Hi-Fi skilled, honest and reliable. He even knows his way around the horrors of Nakamichi 'Dragons', a beast most techs less brave than him run away from screaming.

Since moving to Nth Tasmania I've found nobody I would trust with anything resembling audio gear. In fact it appears the entire phenomena of anything like hi-end ( hate that term but what else can we use?) passed this region by, apart from one or two isolated audiophooles such as myself who send gear back to the mainland for repair. Becomes a bit insane though with equipment such as large heavy turntables and massive speakers.

I hear you loud and clear... It also gets rather expensive shipping (and running the risk of items getting damaged in the process by couriers).

Your sig line mentions "Ascension Summoner 1293SHTL speakers" Another Australian brand I've never encountered.

There are so many obscure Australian brands out there we never hear about and certainly never read about in the local audioporn press"

True, The Ascension Summoners are built by Adelaide Speakers: http://www.adelaidespeakers.com/summoner-floorstanders.html

Extremely good bang for buck, cost $3K including shipping.

I'd like to start a thread on Australian ( and maybe Kiwi?) speakers. It's always been a obsession of mine how Oz manufacturers are often totally ingnored by the local audioporn press. If there has already been a thread on Oz speakers  on STEREONET can someone point it out to me? Thanks.

I've been looking at - I should say listening to - a number of Oz designs and overseas ones. Some of the imported speakers I thought to be way overpriced for what they did with the exception of the latest iteration of the B & W 800 series. But hell, are they ever ugly looking buggers ! However I've been blown away with some local designs, the Krix Neuphonix (MK2?) and several of Legend's. What I've found difficult to assertain is how my Gamut power amps will cope with low impedence designs. B & W couldn't say if the 800's would be seen as a short circuit by my monoblocks and induce protection and Gamut themselves wouldn't say either. Short of dragging my power amps around mainland retailers to see what they'd cope with I'm stuck with a dangerous suck it and see problem. Excuse my cynicism but decades of experience means I don't trust most audio retailers with questions like this .

Anyhow, all this should be on another thread I suspect  - - - - - -

A thread I'd love to read, being an information obsessive.  Read about Adelaide Speakers for the first time recently.  And bumped into another Australian one recently that was made in Fitzroy a while ago.  A pair appeared in Gumtree for $100 recently, very briefly.  Turned out they had cost $3-$4k.  Too far away sadly.

So, nothing in Hobart either ...? How big is the Tassie audio community?
