  15. Hello all, does anyone know how I go about removing the pedestal stand from the bottom of a GEC Weltron 2007 turntable/tape/radio system? I have found one page online mention that the stand screws into the base of the unit but I'm not sure how accurate this limited info is. There are no screws etc so maybe the whole thing unscrews but mine won't budge. Perhaps I just need to be a bit more forceful but I don't want to find out the hard way that I shouldn't! Cheers, Lee

  18. I bought an amp stand/vibration platform from Mike Lenehan a few weeks ago. It's simple thing in many ways, a plate of steel sandwiched between two MDF sheets and covered in a nice, grippy, finish that reminds me of the nitrile gloves I have to wear at work sometimes. It feels lightly rubberized. I had to put it on a sheet of separate MDF as my floor is a bit more prone to damage from steel springs than it would first appear. Mike recommended that I ensure that the lower sheet couldn't move around as that would negate much of the effect of the platform and result in me spending cash on something that doesn't work. So I bought a packet of Blu Tack and distributed it as evenly as I could on the underside of the bottom sheet. In between the Blu Tack and the floor I have placed two pieces of standard A4 typing paper, torn up into quarters. The paper will, hopefully, ensure that the Blu Tack doesn't peel off pieces of the sealant that the floor is sprayed with (I've already had this happen on the feet of several amps, the rubber of the feet sticks to the sealant and brings it off in big flakes, that's the reason for the first, larger MDF sheet to the left of the amp stand). I say hopefully because I have yet to lift the lower sheet and check, I'm saving that surprise for later. So, now that I've got a sheet of MDF sitting on rainbow Blu Tack (the only packet available was the multi-coloured kind, red and yellow and pink and green...., hence my creation of the term "Rainbow Suspension") I can use it to place my amp stand on. And I did. I also placed an amp on it. (for reasons that I hope are obvious) Placement of the springs is very important and just a little more difficult than I would like it to be. You have to adjust them (in, out, forward and back) until the amp+platform wobbles in just the right way and at the right frequency. I didn't realize it at the time but the first few times I got it wrong. However, even though I got it wrong (lets call it "not quite right" from now on shall we?), I could certainly hear an effect on the sound stage of the amp in use but it didn't quite gell with me, it felt uncertain. I tried moving the springs around (obviously not enough) but after two or three attempts I gave up and decided to get back to it later. I had other things to do and the amp stand wasn't going anywhere, there was plenty of time to play with it in due course. Last Monday I was at Mikes place again, picking up my amps that Andy had fixed for me, and he, naturally, asked me about the stand. I said it wasn't quite what I thought it would be. Mike looked thoughtful for a second and said "It sounds like you haven't got it set up right." Knowing how little effort I had put in I promptly agreed with him and then said that I would get it right eventually and that I just had to keep on trying. Later that day I was back home and moving amps from the car into the lounge. Since I have many amps and only so much floor space I had to do some rearranging and it occurred to me that maybe I could stick the YBA cd player on the amp stand while I re-positioned things. So I did. And then, because I can be pretty damn slow sometimes, I started to remember my initial conversation with Mike about the amp stand. He had said that these platforms work even better with sources. At the time I just nodded and moved the conversation along, I was buying an amp stand. I intended to place amps on it. Amps are my thing. I was not buying a stand for things that were not amps. But... what if I did use it for things that were not amps? It's a strange concept but I guess it could happen. You know, in an infinite universe there has to at least be the possibility of such a thing happening. Even if only hypothetically. Once the idea had fully formed I thought why not, and gave it a try. Not only did it work but it worked so well it took two days for me to get up the willpower to remove it again in order to continue with my Sansui/Luxman/Accuphase work. Once I'm done with that the YBA will be going back on that stand and I want it to stay there. It won't of course because if it does any more integrated amps I review will not be able to be compared directly to any of the previously reviewed amps but I will want it to, badly. What did it do? Well it opened up the sound stage, put more space around each instrument, tripled the apparent size of the room and magically transformed the concrete walls into sheets of black silk. So yeah, you might say I like it. You might even say I like it a lot. (if you were prone to understatement that is) I've yet to try it with the Burson Conductor or any other pre-amps or DACs but I can already see it as a permanent fixture in my lounge. It's staying.

  24. I was reading a few posts here on SNA a few days ago and I just happened to read several that mentioned speaker stands within a few minutes of each other. They got me thinking, speaker stands for stand mounts can cost quite a bit, from a few hundred to a few thousand (in the more exotic cases), but how much do they have to cost to be effective, and can you come up with something that will work just as well for under $100? OK, I can't answer that yet, but I have started on a 'proof of concept' pair so I thought I'd put them up in their own thread and see what people thought about them, or if anyone had any ideas that could be used to improve them. I started with the easiest components I could get my hands on, bricks, wood and threaded rod. The combination of these means we get a heavy stand that is very solid, very stable and easy enough to build and pull apart again that it can be easily modified at a later date. The tools required are fairly basic, I had to cut my own wood and threaded rod so I needed a hand saw and a hack saw, I also chose to recess my nuts (no comments please!) so I needed a hole saw and chisel as well. Next time I might use two pieces of 20mm ply, one sheet to bolt together and one, slightly larger, sheet to use as a bottom base. The leftover structural veneer I'm using here is a bit narrow, but it was free so it was worth a try. The pics show one finished stand and all the bits to build the second one. I bought the bricks, threaded rod and nuts and washers from Mitre 10. Speaker Stands Per Stand Component Price each Total Price. Total (kg) Concrete Blocks, 6 3.7 22.2 43.5 8mm threaded rod, 4 3.35 13.4 0.6 Washers, 8 0.16 1.28 nuts, 8 0.22 1.76 Ply or MDF, 4 ? ? 8 Total $38.64 52.1 It took about 3 hours to put the first one together and I wasn't exactly pushing hard, I also mucked up a measurement and had to cut one of the rods twice so I think we can call that both a quick and simple build. I'll see if I can get to the second one this afternoon and then I can move on to the testing phase later in the week.
