"Low Balling" is it acceptable ??

Featured Replies

In a current StereoNET Classified advert I (the Seller) was on the receiving end of a "low baller" offer and politely refused the offer made. Are there any guidelines re this type of Buyer behaviour or should I simply put "LOW BALL OFFERS ARE NOT WELCOME" in my advert. Can I put feedback into the Low Ballers feedback ?

The first time you sit on one getting into the car is a big wake up to your age. Oh the agony ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

I have occasionally knocked back a lowball offer and ended up selling to someone else for a lower price because I overestimated the price I was asking.

It seems to be standard practice for many people today and was actually recommended to us by the security guard at our local JB HiFi.

Yes its a fact of life nowadays......but ultimately the SELLER can decide who his component is eventually sold to or so the StereoNET Guidelines state.

It's what someone is prepared to pay you. Or you wait it out and see if someone makes a better offer.

Definitely not a rule about it, and I don't intend to add one.

I note the potential Buyer has listed the $ figure of his offer in the body of my advert.....that cannot be appropriate ?

Just ignore them, why waste your time responding!!

ย

Also depends on ones definition of a lowball offer e.g 1/2 of asking price.

ย

YMMV

I've hidden that post and the subsequent ones which just weren't necessary.

With respect, you are making quite a big deal over something I wouldn't have actually even considered a low ball offer.
It was, in my opinion, in the right vicinity of 'negotiation'. I would have treated that as a genuine buyer and a chance to get close to my asking price.ย

Many thanks!

Doesn't this mostly answer your own original question?

As the OP it is probably time to close this topic.

If an offer is politely made via PM it can equally be politely accepted or rejected by the seller. End of story.

Depends if it is just an ambit claim.

receiving low balls is fun.ย  ย At least you are getting some attentionย ย ๐Ÿคฃ

My mother-in-law is the queen of low balling and then she goes further and breaks them!ย

Currently there is an audio store selling used Focal Sopra 2's for $18k on consignment, whereas you can pick up a brand new discounted pair for $16.5k. If I was to make an offer on the used ones, it would be around $12k (or about 70% of what I can get them for new).ย

Is offering $12k on speakers that may have cost the original owner $27.5k (RRP) lowballing, or is it just correcting an overestimation?ย

I know if I paid near full RRP of $27.5 (maybe a bit less after haggling), I'd be pretty dirty on an offer of $12k for near new speakers, but this is reality of the current market.ย

There is another audio store selling a pair of Focal Sopra 2 in the Black Laquer for $16500 (RRP $27,500) plus freight for all 55KG for each of them. I tried to lowball them once on a pair of headphones at that time.......didn't go well at all. They didn't hang up though Has there been a change of Focal distribution lots of Focal gear being reduced. That other audio store should check their pricing......wrong colour for me,

I don't know about the acceptable range of low-ball offers. But for most audio equipment, I'm not insulted if the offer is more than 10% of the asking price. If it's a firm offer, then I'd call it low-balling, otherwise I'd just consider it a sensible first offer.

We had the same issue on selling Mrs CE's last car. The first offer was $10,000 cash, which we rejected. But we ended up selling it to the same person for $9,000 when no other offers were forthcoming. A bit of a shame, as it went like the clappers and was still in great condition (except for the 185K on the clock). Would have been a great track car! But I digress...

ย

that said I probably see more listings here than not that are priced higher than they should be (if they want to sell them) and a perceived low ball in a lot of cases is probably the right price.

ย

at the end of the day as sellers in most cases we arenโ€™t in control of the sell price unless itโ€™s priced to sell.

I mentioned the other day in another thread....................if you think you are going to make money selling 2nd hand Audio or even getting back what you paid for it 3 months later.........................you are probably dreamin'.

ย

Happy Buying/Selling you lot.

You can see why audio outlets in Australia "cringe" at the words "Can you offer me a trade-in?" Looking at some of the asking prices on top level gear in the StereoNET Classifieds......wonder what some of them will move for? The eventual Seller's fee would make me blink.

Most stores we know who entertain trade-ins and consignment deals will advise the client on current market conditions. Some clients with consignment equipment will refuse to accept the advice and have high expectations. This unfortunately means a product sits around longer than expected.
