Now I know why your kitty avatar looks so smug and is captioned "purr...".

Best Regards,

Brad

thankyou AB :D

Big fat gobs of kit and not a cable in sight

Beautiful....

thanks iano, something have put bit of effort in the cables, being a lounge room setup with visitors and family use, to maintain waf and marital bliss ! plus with little kids growing up around the system, last thing wanted cables around they can yank at hehe. so yeah theyre there, just tucked away discretely. the back of the 2ch hifi gear very pleased with but the back of the ht rack/gear does need a bit of work with the birds nest that seems to have accumulated over the years :D ... one day when have some time hehe

Ah ... glad you clarified that al ... had me worried for a moment    :P

That's really cool that the P9 is your turntable for life ... very few can say things like that about their components  :)

thankyou sierra, with something like a turntable its something possibly doable...its a beautiful and just thinking what lovely thing to have well into retirement, will be quite a retro throwback by that stage and being likely the last Rega woodgrain style tables and their flagship should be quite a collectable piece by then. Anyways had it 5 years now, looking forward to the 9th year anniversary and then the 18th...and the 27th and so on :D

Great looking system and excellent work to combine the Stereo and HT functions so well.

What are the room dimensions?

thank you TC, its 5.5m in length and about 6m in width, but am fortunate that the system is offset using the left 2/3rds of the room and hence getting around the usual disparaging square room effects you have acoustics wise. Am also utilising the rule of 1/3rds in the setup with sitting at 2/3rd depth and 1/3rd behind me which have found works really well audio wise as well. One other benefit of the system setup offset to the room is my velodyne sub I use for 2ch sits firing right down the middle of the room which is spot on harman recommendation for subs and remarkably is very smooth in response there needing little to no eq for its response and blend in beautifully with the Divas.

I've also utilised focals recommendations with regard room treatment utilising normal room furnishings and hence keeping a good balance between absorbing and reflective, hard vs soft surfaces plus leaving the wall behind the speakers untreated as they recommend :) so given a domestic setting possibly gone as far as I can with regards setup and treatment and how use the room...well within bounds of maintaining waf and maintaing as much a look feel of a normal lounge room as posslbe  ...happy wife...happy life as they say :D

My close-enough-to 2yo would make a meal out of cables & components if allowed to, it's become quite a battle :(

As fond as I am of my 4 tier Belloggetti rack I think it's time for it to go.  But I can't seem to find anything that's a) stylish, b. practical, c) functional, d) - keeps both cable and gear safe and out of reach

the bello would be nice. hey iano, I use an ikea unit for the 2ch gear, you'll see some remnants of the child proofing on that. on the main av rack I used to use a ikea thing myself, but out grew that, and looking high and low for a rack ended up actually making my own. the one I have there is made from modular Qubelok which can get from local aluminium centre or even bunnings. the aluminium centre will cut to length for you, and sell you the plugs to join them. the shelves I got from bunnings, they cut to length and I jarrah stained to match in with my other gear. cost would be under $100 all up from memory.

Have a pic of the finished assembled rack here,

I also use the same style for a floor rack for my 2ch power amp, so its tucked away next to the Divas :)

ps fortunately they do tend to grow out of the touchy feely stage eventually :)

The Rega P9 is a classy looking TT with the timber surround as well as a great sounding one so little wonder you want to hang onto it.  :)

Roll on it's 9th, 18th, 27th aniversary!!

I'm also a Rega fan boy ... I've had my Planar 3 / RB300 combination for over 30 years now ... and it's a keeper for me as well.

It owes me nothing after 30 years of service so instead of spending big dollars on something like an RP8 I've spent a much more moderate sum on a number Groove Tracer mods, 24v motor, TTPSU etc that should lift it's performance right up there once they're all fitted in the new year ... and I'll have it for another 20/30 years! :)

hehe wow, I've only owned regas for about half that time, but yeah theryre pretty robust things and not like av or digital gear where something is outdated just about soon as you buy it. see no reason couldnt hang onto your stuff another 20/30 years :)

Al I know next to nothing about any of your kit but its not hard to see your systems have been well crafted.

I have never been a Rega fan (for no good reason) but your P9 is the closest thing to changing my mind - very nice looking TT and probably sounds even better.

One thing that stands out with the HT set-up is its all backed up squarely against the wall. Is this a compromise for practical reasons or are the Diva / subs happy like this.

  • Author

Thanks Adam, not surprised re your thoughts on rega, given they make a whole range of decks from budget to the p9. Even myself looking to upgrade from long term (10+ years) of my p25 checked out a bit of other stuff but found myself drawn back to the brand, all can say is the p25 is no slouch was amazed what it did with the jubilee and arc phono stage, punching no doubt way beyond its weight, and then blown away literally when my jubilee was taken off the p25 and transferred onto the p9. With the p9 literally has music emanating from an inky blackness, the extension on the top end, naturalness of way it articulates vocals, the drive of the bass and spaciousness of the sound still has me amazed the difference a deck, arm and psu can make in upgrading from the p25 to p9.

Re against the wall, that is a constraint to certain extent as being a lounge room and homely setting obviously can't have the speakers 1.5m out in the middle of the room or anything, but it's still prob a little deceptive in the pics, the divas are quite deep speakers and the velo dd15s though relatively compact for 15" subs are still not that small in Scheme of things, my divas are about 1m out in the room so not really up against the wall, and the subs are doing fine, you don't really want to put subs out in the room in mid space they tend to loose the plot. What am sacrificing is probably 0.5m of soundstage depth but that's about it, the speakers and subs measure pretty well where they are and sounding great to the point haven't bothered with anymore messing around with positioning since initial placement I did to get the best from them :) it's one of the compromises of the room and setting, but something have learned that there will always be some compromise or the other to contend with and pretty happy with the end result :)

Wow, what an amazing set up, especially that gorgeous P9

Fantastic setup Al. I have one of many questions but just starting with one:

How have you integrated the 2ch setup with your AV? Do you physically switch something over?

Not too many systems make me envious at any level these days... this one does!

thankyou guys that is a massive complement ! :)

Roh it all works seamlessly. the musical fidelity a5cr pre has a remote selectable htbypass. so yeah by default for ht/av use that is selected. for 2ch use just matter of selecting input required on the a5 pre and good to go. can program input selection on a universal remote. I use the harmony 1100i. easy as pie :D

ok I updated my appletv in the main system from the older version 1 with the built in hard drive built in to the latest version 3. bonus is the 3 outputs high definition 1080p whereas the older one was always limited to 720p. quite a bit smaller the new one as well. I'll post a pick to compare !

but anyways that leaves me with the old appletv with built in harddrive spare. and am thinking I might locate that over on the 2ch side of things. the luxman has a digital input to its dac. so I can run digital out from the appletv straight to the luxman and use its internal dac :) now the only thing is I would need a display of sorts to feed off the atv so can select songs or put on shuffle and work through its menu.

I only need a small display so thinking something like this which is a 4" lcd

only $30 from hongkong, anyways ordered it see what comes :D

Hi Al - perhaps the remote app for the iPhone may act as a remote control for the older Apple TV? I've never used one, but could be a simpler solution for you - especially if you're streaming music to it (though it has a HD so perhaps the music is stored there?)

hi cam, that is a very good idea. I'll check out, not sure if available with the gen one ATVs, and yeah has the onboard hard drive, which is a good thing as really want to run it off the network, just as a music player only :)

anyways the little screen has shipped anyhow, might be $30 down the drain, as it is the atv has only componoent or hdmi output, and the display composite only, was thinking of hooking up over the green component conenction should give a mono chrome display :)

How good is that P9 Al? Damn that is one gorgeous looking TT and from all accounts a pretty stellar machine on the audio front. Lusting over the RP8 at the moment but would give up a kidney for your P9

absolutely love it ! I remember still the time when first heard it on my system :)

the rp8 is a pretty swish looking thing, but yeah am a bit of a fan of the classic lines of the p9 and would still grab one if can :D  do pop up second hand now and then :)

big difference in form factor old Apple tv with hard drive, vs the new one black with flash ram.

good for the ht/av side where the little back Atv will not take up much room at all.

but will have to do little bit of a re arrange/ re jig to fit the larger ATV into the 2ch side of things :)

Bloody hell, I must have missed this thread over the holidays.

Brilliant gear and great pics, Al.

Congratulations on pulling together such a fine system  :thumb:

Lovely Room and gear Al. Really like those MF amps. Terrific dual-duty implementation.... best of both worlds.

Cheers

M

That's fantastic - such an awesome system!

Something I certainly dream about.

Glad you and your family enjoy it too!

  • Author

thankyou for the lovely comments guys. mostly been incremental improvements and most of the gear has stood well the test of time.  Definitely some areas could potentially improve on though ... and may explore over the years to come, but not somewhere will venture unless can afford to ..which should slow me down :D

Al, ALL of our systems could potentially be improved. The test is, can you resist the temptation?

Well done mate.
