A Search for Truth and Tonality

A quick point ... a convincing rig should be able to go to any sane volume level, 'effortlessly' - and then have the volume drop down to its lowest setting, with no loss in quality and tonality, as you adjust the level over that big range ... this is another of the key markers of capable playback ...

No. That’s not it.   What actually annoys people is that you constantly drag threads (including threads that you start) off topic with vague and irrelevant posts. This really needs to stop

  • To be brutally honest, I doubt many readers are likely to view you as an authority on the matter. Including me, I'm sorry to say.

  • Glad you are happy with your setup. I am of the opinion that if your system sounds good to you and it brings you enjoyment it matters not what others think of it and you should not submit to what othe

We don't care. We just want to see a nice clear photo of your carefully-curated system! Share with us!!

Sorry I couldn't help, but I have to chime in and this video clip sums up quite well about the OP.

1:  I have zero interest in taking pics ...

2:  Gear just gets plunked down where it's convenient - it has to fend for itself; tidiness is the last thing on the agenda

3:  Most should be able to pick the age of this shot, from what's on the screen

4:  So, what's with the papers?!!  ... That, folks, is mass loading - started using that with B&W bookshelves 3 decades ago - because it works. One day, will turn this into something more intelligent ... 😜

Points for working out the model of speakers they're sitting on; the latter formed part of rigs a few iteration ago.

The DVD player is just visible, bottom shelf on right; the 'dud' Blu-ray is bottom, under the Talking Head. All the key electronics is in the back of the right speaker, off photo.

@ICUToo per your request above, we already have the pic?

This does the trick for me at any rate.

IME, audio enthusiasts are doggedly determined to hang onto their set beliefs, no matter what. It's a case of, you have to do 10x times better than what's actually needed, just to get the message across ... something like, say, women in the workplace have known since forever ... 😜.

Biggest problem has always been, that so many variables are involved - trying to get on top of all of them, in a robust way is hard ... very hard. The concept has always been that one has a portable setup, that you can just plunk down, anywhere ... and it's guaranteed to always deliver the goods. Unfortunately, not quite there, yet ... 🙄 - current Edifiers are the closest yet, to such a setup.

ok, well it seems the truth will evade us once again.

The OP? - Going back to that, I have to say, it's pretty mild ... 😉.

What pisses people off, is that I don't go about it, "the right way" ... that is, spend lot and lots of money, fiddle endlessly with perfect positioning of everything, and the room ... ad naueum.

You see, I started expensive ... original kit would have cost around 20K, in today's money - and it delivered, "truth and tonality" ... in short spurts. Burnt out on making that one more 'robust' - but then was inspired to give it another go, years later. As part of that stage of the journey, the question was, "Does it need to be expensive?" ... well, no 😉. Helps, but no guarantee ...

The mindset is the killer here - if you don't get this right, then highly likely the battle will be X times harder. And what is that? Well, it's that every rig is flawed, in fact usually highly flawed; and so the job is to get rid of the flaws - tricky but it can be done.

There are a few people around who grok it; but because they are a minority, lots of poo gets poured on them, from a great height ... 🙂

In fact, the Truth is mighty simple - learn to recognise inaccuracies in system playback, and then do something to fix the issues ...

Please don’t characterise yourself as some kind of iconoclast that annoys people because you challenge the establishment. You aren’t.

Where the speakers are doesn't matter ... that's probably the key marker of competent playback: the soundstage is created by what your ears hear coming from the speakers; the room situation is irrelevant. Of course, if the replay is not good enough, then what I've just said doesn't apply - and then one has to play the fiddling with room and speakers game.

The phrase "a window onto the captured event" describes what the illusion is like ... the room beyond the speakers is chopped off, and is replaced by the acoustic and soundstage of the music; you are on one side of a window, and the musicians, etc, are on the other.

Those who consider what I'm saying is nonsense make themselves known as people who have never experienced a rig working this well - you can't describe what a colour TV gives one, if they only see a black and white world.

You specifically mentioned a huge soundstage stretching back, and richness, weight and depth.

Im sorry but with the way you have your speakers setup there is no way in hell you could get any depth to your soundstage. I have no doubt you can pinpoint instruments, any decent setup can achieve this but if you honestly think that location and setup of speakers doesn’t matter then you really are living in la la land.

It is just another tedious wind up. I would usually name it with a word containing the letter T, but I don't want to invite censure.
