New album from the UK electronic pioneer that is John Foxx. backed by vintage keyboard/synth collector Benge, thisn is the 1st all analog synth Foxx has done since the face changing " Metamatic" . Mira Aroyo from Ladytron also singsn on one track.

This album is the perfect synthesis of warm retro and cold futurism.

Hi All,   Some 70's German Electronica today:     JJ

  • Last nights retail therapy courtesy of Urban Records in Leederville

  • Aphex Twin - Classics - 1995, 2LP. Because I need a dose of techno nostalgia after last night... It was my birthday on Friday. I had a migraine for most of the day and had to cancel my plans. When S

Also listened to Ott's new album today 'Mir', slightly different direction, but IMO the best album he has made.

It took me a couple listens to get into the album; it is quite different.

I like track 1, the second half of track 4 (once the vocal tweaking starts), track 5 is very groovy considering the lack of lack of kick drum, track 6 - Ott rocking goodness and track 7 is typical final track Ott smoothness. The alphabet recited at the end of the of the last track is Ott's three year old daughter, Daisy.

Track 2 and 3 are a little too Dub steppy for my taste, but I will keep listening to the album and perhaps they will grow on me.

Jake, Only on CD unfortunately, but well worth it and it plays in the car. Well I'll be honest, it only plays in the car :thumb:

On the way to Chez Bunyip and digging Thomas Fehlmann's head nod Gute Luft.

Loving the flac player for iPhone.

Well i am a big fan of dubstep especially the more funky/psychedelic glitch hop stuff. I was quite surprised that Ott actually went in that direction for track 2 and 3 but they are two of my favourite tracks. IMO Ott has made some great dubstep style tracks that are more interesting and complex than a lot of the artist that 'specialise' in the genre. Another one doing good psy dubstepy style stuff is Phutureprimitive, i think the new album 'Kinetic' is simply amazing. Although they (Ott and Phutureprimitive) are using similar formulas that have been around for awhile, they are making it their own, who knows they may be forming a new sub genre, psy dubstep/glitch hop. I think it would be great to see some of the better and more established psychill artists move in this direction, to a lot of peoples dismay i am sure.

Now Younger Brothers newest album 'Vaccine', what is going on there. Its hard to imagine that Posford even had anything to do with the production of this album. Maybe after multiple listens deeper layers will come out (i hope), but at the moment it sounds like a commercial uk pop/rock band. IMO their best album was 'A Flock of Beeps', i enjoyed the first 2 tracks off 'Last Days' but the album just felt too all over the place for me, still not bad though and quite listenable, but their latest, i have been finding it hard to get through in one sitting.

Each to their own re: styles. :thumb:

The Phutureprimitive album has grown on me, there are particularly good tracks. Check out Tipper, Wobble Factor and Broken Soul Jamboree.

Vaccine is not really to my taste, but I will give it a good listen. I sent them quite a bit of money during their Pledge drive. I would not have been that generous if I had known their intention/ new sound.

I reckon the second YB album is still quite good;I like quite a few tracks on that album - the last track Psychic Gibbon is cool and there is also electronic track toward the end.

Still, after reading your post I ended up listening to A Flock of Bleeps. It really is an awesome album.

Ok so i re-listened to 'The Last Days of Gravity', and it deserves more credit than i gave it. I always felt the album had no flow, which turned me off, and thought the track I am a Freak was shite (its not actually that bad)but if you look at the tracks more individually it is quite a good album. My pick would still be 'Flock of Beeps' though.:thumb:

Yeasayer - 'Odd Blood' (Secretly Canadian). This album is really growing on me lately, not strictly an electronic album, but still very electronic. I believe this band is categorised as indietronica, electronic indie, or something along those lines.

Today it is:

Galaxy, Science of Ecstasy, Chillcode Records

Down tempo electronica, quite layered up over spacey pads. Enough space in the mix for there to be nice use of reverb and decay. An electronic sounding album that is s-m-o-o-t-h and chillaxed, although not as ambient as the most recent Galaxy album. Gets more and more groovy as the album progresses. Well worth checking out.

G'day,

Galaxy, Science of Ecstasy, Chillcode Records

I used to have Galaxy's Angel CD back in the day ... it was on Blue Room Released IIRC so I thought it might be trancey but it was kinda laid back electro. Dunno if I still have it ... might be buried in the storage container back in Oz.

I have not given that one a listen, any good?

I ended up following up the old with the new;

Galaxy, Everlasting Tone, Chillcode

Better produced than Science of Ecstacy - which one would hope/ expect given that it is a newer album (some three years in the making). I have to admit that I enjoy the spacey pads and layered electronic sounds that make this album. The tempo is moves around over the course of the album, but it is not unpleasant at all. Whilst this album does not have as much in-your-face groove as Science of Ecstacy - the groove is still very much there. I think this is also worth having.

In other news:

Some new Mastergerhita is on the way:

http://mastermargherita.info/

For those that have not heard him; I think he is a must have producer: deft, deft and deft are the three words I would use to describe his work.

Also, note there is side project between Maxuam and Master Margherita. 24-bit downloads are available:

G'day,

Various Artists - Three A.D. -- I found a couple of CDs from the Waveform label today at the local thrift ... this and a Higher Intelligence Agency and an Earthjuice compilation and some others. This one is the third in a series of ambient/dub (hence the 'A.D' in the title) released in the mid 90s, so it's got the usual suspects (Coldcut, Spacetime Continuum, H.I.A, etc). Right now there's a track playing called "In 7" which, unsurprisingly, is in 7/4 time, kinda unusual for electronic music to be anything other than 4TTMFF.

Today it is:

Ailo, Concepts, Iono Music

A diverse and well produced down tempo album. This is an underrated album; a very good friend of mine is a producer of electronica and always asks 'What is this album... I need to revisit it'. He never does and thus that statement is uttered whenever I slip this album into the mix. This album was released in 2003 (I think), I hope these guys release some more music - it is mature electronica.

Just finished listening to Younger Brother's 'Vaccine', actually quite a good album. On first listen it was quite hard to sit through, this time round i throughly enjoyed it. Sorta like Younger Brother quirkiness meets a pop rock style band setup. Don't let that scare you off though, there is a lot more going on the album that is quite minimal and deep in the background that was revealed to me this listen (cant really expect much less from Posford). The constant singing originally was hard to take, but has now grown on me also.

Gone vintage electronic tonight fellas.......

just recently bought both MM and CW on cd - new re-mastered versions - both sounds better than my admittedly hazy memory of the originals - bt crisper, bit tighter, but not to LOUD

I was listening to the '78 UK pressing of MM, and the '81 Japanese pressing of CW. Both sounded great for SQ. They're raw and very dated, but very cool (an acquired taste).

Vintage for me too over the weekend:

Laibach - Nova Akropola

Perhaps the darkest album I own...

Another happy one:

And this:

And of course:

Also something only a couple years old:

Goodiepal - Nag Nag Bacon

A bit like The Civil War by Matmos only way weirder. Incredibly detailed embossed LP surface on side 2/4 (unplayable).

i have CW on vinyl bought 1981 when was a lot younger, still have it , my copy of MM in the german lyrics version (cd) funny but the model sounds quite harsh sung in german :thumb:

Bola - Soup -- a great mellow electronic album from quite a few years ago now, on the Skam label. Loved this back in the day and I should really get some of Bola's other albums such as Gnayse ("bola soup" and "bola gnayse" ... geddit?)

Experimental noise, more musical than Merzbow less musical than F@"k Buttons. Great example of this kind of stuff. If you can sit through an hour of this or handle a gig a new understanding of sound can emerge. There's no point in checking out 5 minutes worth. The benefits come at a cost...and possible hearing loss...

Kind of old skool tonite:

Digital Mystery Tour, D.M.T. Express, Sofa Beats

A very nuanced production and a great album (e.g. love the 303 line in track 7) ... even though they are French. Sofa Beats is a downbeat sub label to Danish power house label Iboga Records. This was the first release on the lable and was the second album from Digital Mystery Tour, which is a French downbeat collective spear headed by goa trance legend Stephane Holweck (Total Eclipse, early Juno Reactor, M.O.T.Y., etc). In D.M.T. Holweck is joined by a number of collaborators including Florian Seriot (Toirés, Asia 2001) and other notable chill/trance big-shots. Miscellaneous down beat beats - a must have.

As is their first album:

Digital Mystery Tour, Digital Mystery Tour, Twisted Records

A sophisiticated first effort. Again, down tempo with world influences. A classic album.

Since there are a few references to Vangelis I'm surprised no one has mentioned Oneohtrix Point Never.

I've been playing Rifts and his latest album, Returnal, non stop recently. It's been said a fair bit but he has to be one of the most important individuals in electronic music at the moment, IMHO. Just oozes talent.

Oh and Geoff - love Bola - Soup, beautiful, going to have to dig that one out now.
