berun12 Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 "Stalker" is a garden play in comparison with "Other" My friend discribed this album as Michael Jackson playing from behind the grave. However I slightly disagree with him, Michael Jackson was mostly cheerful bloke nsnotes
Vortexjah Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Spoonbill - 'Zoomorphic' (Omlette Records), more psy wobble goodness from Australia.
Vortexjah Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 listening to a mix from The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, while not strictly electronic it does contain electronic elements. This can be found on Rob Booths excellent site http://electronicexplorations.org/. The site is a good place to find new artists and listen to mixes of some of your favs. As the site intends: a blend of dubstep, minimal, idm, techno, and advanced electronica.

Amar Dhall Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) One out of leftfield: Alexander Daf and Aedem, "Prism", Microcosmos records. Fairly thick pads layered with some deft percussion and synth work. This album surprised me quite a bit. Down tempo, IDM. Edited January 12, 2011 by Vitruvian
Amar Dhall Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) Just checked out Master Margherita on peak, very good indeed. Then checked out his 'MPC' album on Bakshish, and thought to myself WTF? very dark, primitive, and repetitive(not that there is anything wrong with that if thats your cup of tea), but very different to the 'Hippies with gadgets' album. Then actually read up on the album, and realised it was his earlier stuff, before he succumbed to the computer for producing. If you have not already, also check out Peaking Goddess Collective's Organika on Peak. It's another great album that blends organic and electronic sounds. Listening to: Heyoka - 'Marklar' on Muti music. wobbled out glitch hop goodness. People like Simon Posford, Nick Barber, Greg Hunter, Master Merghrita, Youth and a few others are of the calibre that I am interested in hearing their musical progress; not everything they do is my cup of tea however, I feel that there work is worth exploring as art. I am approaching collecting electronica for the purposes of building a sonic library - I guess this makes me quite tolerant of dodgy early works by some. That said, I am trying to slowly share some old classics and also inform people of new stuff that I find interesting. I have also been spinning Heyoka, "Gate Code" Muti Music More glitch hop, lots of wobble but it has been given a twist by being layered over hip hop style kicks. This is very much an album for a particular mood or past time - possibly walking backwards through an alien jungle... It is however, very well produced. Edited January 12, 2011 by Vitruvian
Vortexjah Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 for the purposes of building a sonic library Aren't we all. guess this makes me quite tolerant of dodgy early works by some. Dont get me wrong, i wasnt knocking the album, just stating that it was quite different. That said, I am trying to slowly share some old classics and also inform people of new stuff that I find interesting This is great, and i am sure everyone here appreciates this service, i certainly do. Listening to: Sole - 'Nuclear Winter Volume One' (Fake Four Inc.), surprisingly good.

Bronal Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 OK you doof doof boys, is anyone here into ambient: drone, space, Berlin school? Thinking Biosphere, Alio Die, Oophoi, etc.
hired goon Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 G'day, OK you doof doof boys, is anyone here into ambient: drone, space, Berlin school? /waves hand. There's a thread on SH forums about recommended ambient CDs that's been making me spin some old favourites: Global Communication, Biosphere, Stars Of The Lid, Vidna Obmana, Robert Rich, Steve Roach, Tetsu Inoue, etc. I haven't got around to the Berlin School stuff yet (although Global Communication's 76:14 does get quite Tangerine Dream in places). --Geoff
houdinifangs Posted January 13, 2011 Author Posted January 13, 2011 OK you doof doof boys, is anyone here into ambient: drone, space, Berlin school?Thinking Biosphere, Alio Die, Oophoi, etc. How about some ambient doof: Gas - Zauberberg Or some Aussie guitar ultra drone: Oren Ambarchi - Grapes at the Estate. A bit similar to Sunn O))) but more mellow and transcendental. I also like Biosphere's Autour De La Lune and Shenzhou (a nice reworking of Debussy).
Amar Dhall Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 (edited) OK you doof doof boys, is anyone here into ambient: drone, space, Berlin school?Thinking Biosphere, Alio Die, Oophoi, etc. I think that one of the issues with electronica is the process of classifying music. To some people the term "ambient" is used to describe all kinds of electronic below 125 BPM irrespective of whether it it is breaks, dub, lounge, World fusion ,bells and gongs or some other sub-genre. To others "ambient" denotes the type of music on Ultimae. You seem to be in the latter catagory. Distant System "Spiral Empire" Celestial Dragon Records is pretty good. AstroPilot "Solar Walk" Altar Records is also not too bad. Doof "Its About Time" is also brilliant - the first half is uptempo then it slows down track by track. I tend to gravitate toward the mid - down tempo electronica. That said, if there was some good new 'Doof, doof' music I would be happy to hear it. I have found a dearth of good 'doof doof' for quite some time; Mr. Peculiar "Mind Dala", Infected Mushroom (before "I'm the Supervisor"), Hallucinogen, Prometheus' first two albums, and a few others, but as a general observation, uptempo electronica (140+ BPM) is in need of refreshing. I am open to suggestions if anyone has any. As an aside, if anyone is ever bored, it is good fun trying invent sub-genres of electronica. For example 'Wow, I have been digging "Estonian Crunk Hop" lately' or 'I am completely over the 2009 inundation of "Doubled Marionet Twirl" from Cincinnati'. Edited January 13, 2011 by Vitruvian
Bronal Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 The modern definition of 'ambient' music was coined by Brian Eno in the 1970s as music that could be listened to or simply function as background music. Obviously, there is not too much of that being produced these days although SOTL come to mind. Most electronic music is not, by definition, ambient. My reference to 'doof doof' was intended to be humorous and not to provoke any classification wars - jeez, we have enough arguments elsewhere on SNA without having them on the music forum! My own tastes veer towards drone, beatless space, tribal and electro-acoustic. I also like albums with a lot of field recordings in them (eg: Alio Die, Biosphere). A few years ago I tracked down the first three Gas albums at great expense, only to find they were remastered and rereleased the following year! Now there's music that can clear a room in 10 seconds! I find the Ultimae label becoming very samey, although the productions themselves are first class, with very little apparent compression.
New Sensations Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Bronal. Proem did a dark/drone record a couple of years ago. I think you'd dig it. Gas? Was that on the Emit label? I seem to recall their compilations featuring frogs and other amphibious creatures on the cover? Me? I can never get enough of FSOL archive releases.
hired goon Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 G'day, Gas? Was that on the Emit label? I seem to recall their compilations featuring frogs and other amphibious creatures on the cover? There was a Gas an the Emit label, but the Gas bronal mentions is a different artist. I had a lot of Emit CDs back in the day but regretfully sold them --Geoff
Amar Dhall Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 This morning: Shulman, "Endless Rhythms of a Beatless Heart" and another album by them "In Search of a Meaningful Moment", Aleph Zero Records IDM, World, down tempo, excellent production.
hired goon Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 G'day, Klaus Schulze & Manual Gottsching - Friendship -- from the ashes of Ash Ra Tempel comes this reunion CD from 2000. Soft synth pads, light drumming, and electric guitar wailing over the top. Listening via Grooveshark coz the CD is out of print (which gives me a sad). --Geoff
