Typical of bookshelf speakers, low efficiency but it can mean good bass. I would think an SS amp of about 200W would get the best out of them.

I haven’t really done much with my system for months. Lots of plans as always but no time or energy to execute.

Anyway, I’ve had an idler on the brain for ages but this particular find was more or less a serendipity/impulse purchase. It’s a ‘64 L70, all original (apart from the missing mat) and in I-can’t-believe-how-good condition with a Nagaoka OS 300 MP cart

Older gear keeps surprising me. Not because it’s good - I’m not so naive as to think newer is automatically better - but in how it presents music, at least in my experience with this and my Altecs and some 90s CDPs and DACs. Yes, I hear the rumble of the idler. Yes, I hear the honky edge of the horns. Yes, I know that “warmth” is distortion and the room is the most important component and all that. Still, I’m sitting here spinning Portishead Dummy which I’ve been listening to for 30 years and I’ve never heard it sound so vital and engrossing and… corporeal. And it’s not that it’s accurate or neutral - because it’s not - but it’s full of texture and blood and music-ness. The rumble is still there but I’m not listening to that any more than you’re listening to road noise when you play Back in Black in your car loud enough to shake the doors. It doesn’t matter because you’re in the music.

Ok now I’m beginning to sound like a wanker. Whatever ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’d like to also keep my “new” turntable (a stock sl-1200 that was actually made closer to the L70 than to today) but I’ll see how I go for funds. I’m very excited by my new toy, though :)

That Lenco is lovely. I scored one a few years back and it's in good condition but nowhere as nice as yours. I'm hoping to resurrect it one day. Enjoy the vintage love!

Thanks, Mack. The guy I bought it from got it off the original owner. Had the original receipt tucked into the owners manual and all. I think I saw your post about yours when I was trawling for info. From memory it looked great.

I’m already planning a new plinth for mine, similar looking to what it’s on but not made of mostly cardboard 🙃 I want to keep it as original looking as possible but I think it would sound better sitting on a few potatoes than the “plinth” it came with.

Don’t sleep on getting yours up and spinning. Mine already sounds great just with a bit of alignment

Not a big deal but finally got to build a cable long enough to connect the linear power supply. It was kindly included in the purchase price of the Eglo from Stereonet classifieds.

I wasn't convinced Id hear anything as its a no name Chinese power supply but on listening to Dire Straits Making Movies, was reasonably impressed. I consider this album to be not as well produced as Love over Gold or Brothers in arms and in my opinion side one is the stand out with side two more of a contractual obligation. (les boys, really...)

What I noticed, or think I noticed, was the sound improve in the areas of detail resolution and the sound being closer to the other two albums. Also Knoppflers strat had a more "strat" sound. A bit more twangyness of a strat with new strings. All very small changes but as with the whole system, it is a sum of all of the parts. Definitely worth getting the power supply into the game.

Absolutely!

Nice phono stage ... I'd suggest an 18v PS from Clay Gieseler would probably make it sound even better! 🙂

Upon listening to a few more albums this really has taken the Eglo up a level. Thanks for triggering my GAS. 🙄Where would I look for one of those?

@Gieseler Audio

I bought these Sonique SAV4 from their closing down auction a loooong time ago. They have been with family pretty much since then but have now found their way back to mine. These were a custom purple, and as you can see... its very purple.

I had a good session with them the other night, A/B ing from the Luxman against the Verity Finns. The Sonique remind me a lot of John Blue JB4's. A cardboard boxy sound but they pick out a lot of different detail and present the music differently. Really good with acoustic and female vocals, not so much rock and roll. Good separation and soundstage. They might need more punch then the 20watts of the Luxman can provide, ill run them through an AVR with a bit more power and see if they like that.

No biggie but I made new grills for the twin 12 inch enclosures. Next is to do either paint or stain the boxes.

Trying some power amp combos with “Heavy Metal” 6H7 tube preamp. Once more the Russian 6N7 tubes are very good.

The system had “Xfi” (6AS7) driving the speakers for a week or so now my EL3N power amp installed. The EL3N amp had a stack more gain very obvious when I plugged it in with the preamp volume untouched.

The 6H7 preamp and EL3N power amp didn’t work, very noisy. This time SS preamp and EL3N. Excellent, right amount of warmth and detail with deep full bass.

I did try my EL34 amp with 6V6s installed and SS preamp. Very bright and airy but I craved more warmth and this was where the EL3N amp worked best. As always all DIY gear.

Most pleasant sanctuary in this crazy weather!

Looks a bit of a disaster but some new arrivals on Friday are now running in- Field Coil quasi transmission line from Aurel Bryan. They really convey the quality of amplification and upstream components, can't wait for them to really flower!

Makes this week's Qld trip just a little bit disappointing😆

I really love the look of this setup - the wall colour - everything - it looks beautiful.

How would you describe the sound signature of the field coil speakers?

I was just trying to describe it to a mate. Best I can come up with at this early stage is "communicative" which feels very vague. I have the same drivers with a fixed magnet (albeit in different cabinets) and the FC make the others sound slow.

Some running in to do, and positioning, but level of detail is resulting in frequent eyebrow raising right now

What level of amplification do they need?

First serious listen tonight, with an Audio Space 300B PSE which was quite something! My suspicion would be that Sugden or First Watt would be magic for solid state aficionados.

Makes me wish the Line Magnetic 805 was still here😔

When the little things matter..............

I finally got the time today to try out the Les Davis Entropic Isolators I purchased from @GC Hifi after having them for nearly 3 weeks.

Bruce @BAM kindly volunteered to come over and be my second set of ears for the experiment.

I have heard these serveral times at the GC HiFi events, how they have made a difference to the three systems there, so I was excited to hear what they may bring to my own setup.

We put them under my amplifier and the changes they made to the system was noticeable within moments - we both heard the same things at the same time on comparison.

Morrissey was my test music (Vinyl Playback) and his voice presented with more depth, richness and fullness. The bass was better in the way it was tighter and more detail shone through. His voice sounded so beautiful - I was excited!

We tested with other music such as Leonard Cohen, Olivia Dean & Jake Bugg - all with much better sounding playback with the Entropics in place.

I tried another set under my Phono Stage but did not notice much benefit there so decided to try them with the Limetree Streamer - interestingly under the iPad itself - cleaner signal.

How these little gems work I do not know and I am probably the least likely person on this whole forum to tweak my system too often - so this was a surprise result for me.

So I am now sitting here on my own listening to Leonard in the sweet spot, I can only say under the amplifier this "box of chococates" has made a signficant difference - in fact I have the volume at less than normal and getting a much deeper (bigger) richer and cleaner sound.

Some time soon I will try the second set under the CD player to see what they do there. But for today, I shall enjoy this box of chocolates as the treat they truly are.

Are you using a tube based PS for the driver or a SS based PS? I have a schematic for a tube based PS. Got an image of the PS?

I'm not technically minded to any great degree, but I'm told it's a LC unit, solid state obviously. With 12, 15, 18 and 21v output options.
