Mine is also exactly the same as Shane's, and not a NZ version either but the same Australian label and run out groove info.

Bass nice and solid, but not very present. Good dynamics but overall a bit ho hum SQ wise. Mids recessed and not much air or sparkle.

An average pressing.

Yep, I just listened to 10 9 ..... and you pretty much summed it up.

Red Sails In the Sunset OTOH is excellent sonically with extension and air galore.    Jimmy Sharman's Boxer would be close to the Oils best song imo.  The strings on Kosciusko just kick .

Red Sails to me was when the Oils were at their absolute pinnacle of their game and creativity.  Diesel and Dust was pretty damm good as well then slowly but surely downward spiral.

I would love to see a guy like Burnie Grundman mastering and Chris Bellman go back to the analog tapes and do some analog mastering with Jim Moginie and Ron Hurst providing some direction on the sound.

Imagine an analog mastered box set pressed at Pallas on beautiful black vinyl :love

Perhaps I should give Rob a call and orgainise it :)

Listening to bird noises MSPD 462 ATM just cleaned on the Audio Deske Systems vinyl cleaner and it's so hollow it may as well be 128kb MP3.

4 albums to go, wonder how they will fare, doubt it'll be good.

Yes to all of this. Jimmy Sharmans probably is the Oils best song. Lyrics, music, the build up, imagery, an insight into Oz history etc. Its great on so many levels.

An OIls box set, put me down for one!

Have the LPs and going through them slowly. 10-1 is a -B -D2, sounds ok, better than the CD which always sounded "weak" to me. Haven't played any of the others yet (will have to wait till I have the house to myself, so as to achieve appropriate loudness!)

Ended up with Midnight Oil, Species, Bird Noises, Dead Heart, 10-1, Red Sails, Diesel & Dust ( mate had no idea what happened to Head Injuries which is MIA)

Also have  Gossip - Paul Kelly & The Coloured Girls, What a Life - Divinyls, Ego and Straight in a Gay Gay World- Skyhooks.

All vinyl looks NM, Skyhooks covers a little battered, but pretty happy with the overall condition.

Just have to agree on a price. Feel lucky to able to look at/play them before buying.

I've never been interested in the Oils but reading this thread did spark my curiosity.

I just purchased 10 - 1 and Red Sails, near mint US 1st pressings, very cheaply so I'll be interested in the music and the quality of the pressings when they arrive.   ;)

10 to 1 is a noticeably more polished production, my copy is not lacking in the bottom end and sounds absolutely fantastic (like the others I would have bought it from the Narrabeen Record Bar week of release),  Side 1 matrix "MX202150   SBP237868-1 GOOD FELLOW ONE TALK PLASTIC MR NICK    TOWNHOUSE", Side 2 "MX2021501   SBP237868-2   ITS ABOUT THE ENDING      TOWNHOUSE"  (the 2nd '0' in 2021501 is crossed out with an X), everything on both sides is hand etched except TOWNHOUSE which is stamped.

Maybe it was late in the day and Mr Nick was getting sloppy with his engraving?

Reminds me of strolling into JB HiFi back in the Oils hey day, a long haired surf dude sales assistant was playing a dvd of one of their concerts on a big screen, suddenly he freeze frames a crowd shot, "look it's me" he shouts, sure enough there he was front row in the mosh pit!

Last time I saw them was the "Real Thing" tour at the Regent Theatre back in 2000.

It was a great night, but I do hope they play some spaces with a bit more elbow room this time around!

Quite true, but I loved the Oils for their music and not their politics! And they were one of the best live performers I've seen.

Funny, I was never a huge fan back in the day. I think I always had problems with "Political Ideologies vs Bogan Fanbase" clash that seemed weird to me.

Anyhoo, fast forward to 2002 and I scored a free ticket to what I think ended up being their last tour at Metros Perth. I was totally won over by the power and the passion of the band (pun intended). Plus most of the bogans had disappeared  ;)

Now I rate them as a national treasure and I'm very happy to have them back.

Saw them at their peak back in the 80's at the Astor theatre in Melbourne. I was in the upstairs balcony it was moving so much due to the fans I thought it was in danger of collapsing!

A spotlight fell to the stage just missing Peter during the concert, must have been the PA's volume!

Well if John Howard can like bob Dylan for the singing but not the song

I guess it's fine to like midnight oil for the music but not the songy

Yep, songs with an edge aimed at politics sorta will be blunt now, the machine chewed him up.

He had a go though, we cant deny him that. Better than some.

Sorry but I really can't take Peter Garret seriously these days. He is just another retired politician to me and I have no desire to hear him sing again. Have all their albums and was a big fan but Peter just had to spoil it.

I'll give the Oils this, I was never a fan of their music, but I respected the way they went about it.

Firstly, a good friend of mine was 16 and saw them at the 21st Century in Frankston.  He played the drums, and took along a sign and asked if he could drum to one of their tracks, which they let him do.  Wow, what an experience!

Secondly, I had friends who were on holiday in outback Australia and at their campsite heard a band start to play.  They walked quite some distance to see what was going on, and the Oils were playing to an Aboriginal community.  This was all free and unpublicised.

Anyway, Garrett's absolute failure at a poli has killed that legacy somewhat for me, but as I said, I was never really into them anyway.

Ooh, tough there Brother Kaynin, pollie stuff is heavy lifting. No one likes you or wants you to 'succeed'. Nova peris and Pete might go to the pub this week.

A lot harder than singing utopian style songs. The gears of the machine certainly caught the back of his floppy shirt and dragged him in.

Well, to be fair, he let the shirt get caught.
