After a fair amount of turmoil, frustration and even a tear or two I'm finally beginning to feel like the system is settling down into a place where I'm finding listening sessions enjoyable and reward

What an amazing couple of days. To think this time last week the thought of actually owning a pair of Sovereigns would have just been a daydream to now actually having a pair in situ in the church is

This ones called Jeff so I think he walked into the wrong bar.

Well they say variety is the spice of life.....

Hmm got me thinking tho if only it were this cheap to swap wives 😀

You should take a leaf from my book and keep multiples of everything - tubes and SS for mine, then stop. [emoji6]

Multiple marital system(s) too?

Actually speaking of wives for the first time in history my Mrs complemented the new amp with "that looks nice" instead of the usual "ewww that freakin ugly"

Seems tides are turning in the church.

great to hear the tide is turning ... its been hard to keep up :D

I think it'll be  Metal GTG... you may not approve @@joz

Perhaps, but perhaps I'm on his ignore list.

He hasn't taken one bite yet :P

I'd love to hear killswitch Engage's new album on those JBL's.

Some semblance of order has taken place.

Remounted the turntable wall shelf and made some trolleys for the JBL's to raise them slightly as well as making them a bit more manageable moving them around until I find the right spot for them.

Yep very nearly become my new HiFi rack as the originL plan was to put the amp on top of it.

And.........sound?

Sound is huge as you'd expect. Further to my previous comments I've found that you really need to crank them a little for them to come alive. These are no pipe and slipper background jobbies, you need to get serious and give them some juice before the bass firms up and gives that tight kick in the gut slam. This also assists in the opposite direction as the treble is polite to put it nicely (some might say shy or even missing) but once you got some decent SPL everyting gells and comes together in a giant wall of sound. It's a very easy to listen to sound and one that never becomes tiresome or fatiguing.

Imaging is really good too and completely caught me off guard as it was not something I expected them to do well. Lower mids can get chesty but I think a lot of that is to do with the bass drivers proximity to the floor so I'll be raising them another few inches I the next few days.

Very happy though exactly the kind of sound I've been looking for. To me these are not typical hi-fi speakers they are more like being at the venue with that wall of sound that you feel as much as you hear. It a very tactile experience that I could never achieve with various smaller speakers I've had in the past.

Still gathering my thoughts around the Jeff Rowland amp but am impressed with what I'm hearing so far. Never heard a serious classD before but it seems to be very smooth but with real dynamic slam as well. With 400w into 8 ohms and 800w into 4 ohms I doubt I'll ever be wanting for more power and control the JBLs well. Another cool (literally) feature is its so efficient it won't double as a room heater nor make me nervous leaving it on all day as it chews through the watts at idle.

Another thing is its not fussy on incoming voltage so it shouldn't be moody like some of my previous amps only sounding there best in the wee hours of the morning.

Anyway lots more experimenting/listening to be done so more to come.

WOW, nice amp, congrats.  Same with the JBL's, excellent review :thumb:

wow cool.

edit, thanks for sharing this

Been playing around with room placement again and this latest config. seems to be the best in taming the room boom around 50hz which while sounding nice on certain recordings makes some others almost unlistenable (Underworlds latest being a good example)

It really is amazing how different the same gear sounds in the room when you shuffle things around. Going to keep it like this for a while and see how it goes.

At least now I only have a amp and turntable to worry about making shifting the electronics around super easy. The speakers on the other hand......

Hello Tubularbells,

A while since your last update after the latest changes.  I hope after the recent flurry of activity it means you have found a satisfying sound and are spending all your spare hours enjoying music. This can be a frustrating hobby when you know the sound you are seeking exists but it keeps falling just out of grasp. You have obviously been trying a few different flavours, I do hope it has resulted in contentment and not frustration. Glad to see an awful lot of Kate Bush on the record wall too.

Cheers

After giving the new speaker position a good while to settle in I've decided to stick with it as this config has the least room interaction in the bass region and interestingly as a result I found I no longer required any bass trapping making the room somewhat tidier as a result.

It really is amazing what difference moving the speakers 10cm in or out from the walls can make so I'm no longer expeciencing any bass boom on certain recordings (particularly electronic) however the downside is as a result I found the bass actually lacking in the lowest registers even with 4X15" pounding away!

So I have re-commissioned my REL sub to assist and am now getting the result I was after (clean musical tactile bass)

I've also been cataloging more of my vinyl so have added an additional IKEA rack along the back of the room as well as arranging/categoring it (shite do I really have 64 Madonna records 😳)

Doro looking like such a hottie.

She signed this while in Melbourne during the "Fight" tour. She's an amazingly humble woman who really cares for her fans.

Humble? I wouldn't have noticed ;)
