$1200 budget:Which coffee machine(Auto)?

Featured Replies

Need some help.

Niece with 2 babies is heading back to work and she's sick of buying coffee every morning so was looking at buying a Delonghi Primmadonna from Hardly Normal up here on the Far North Coast. I've pointed her in the direction of a review site that just cans a whole heap of their machines and I said I'd find out what's out there for her budget which is $1200 give or take a hunge I'd say.

She'll be super busy in the mornings and her idea for the fully auto job comes from the thought: That she wont have anytime to muck around with a manual with two babies in tow.

She owned a cafe so she's also a good little barrista but the thought of waiting for the machine to heat up and waiting for the steam(like my machine) is too much for her.

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure you guys are reading the OP's requirements...He doesn't want a POD,coldpress, grind your own etc.   Luc the Saeco Royal Cappuccino consistantly rates well, Check here ----> http://www

  • No idea what your talking about sorry, and it's not for me, I have a machine but thanks for taking the time to reply.

  • A 2 year old PLO42EM  does a nice coffee and having the conical burr grinder built in it doesn't take up too much space

as per the other thread - cold press - use a Toddy, buy coarse ground quality beans and the brew takes 12hours passive and makes enough to last 1-2 weeks adn keeps in the fridge - can be drunk hot or cold

I have mine with chilled Maleny Dairies milk and it's super duper

$50 which should leave $1150 for HiFi or some nice dinners out.

No idea what your talking about :) sorry, and it's not for me, I have a machine but thanks for taking the time to reply.

Cold press isn't a bad idea. Set it up in the pantry, load up and let it do it's work overnight.

Other than that I have no answers either. Sorry, I love the whole process of grinding, tapping etc.

Quite frankly, if we're talking about a machine into which you insert a capsule to make the coffee, I wouldn't bother. It's an expensive way to drink instant coffee as far as I am concerned. Or in audiophile terms: it's going to mp3 for the convenience of it all after you've been using an LP12.

I use a drip filter machine with a timer: water and coffee in before bedtime, timer starts it up 10 minutes before my alarm goes off, I have coffee ready when I get up. Admittedly my daughters don't like filtered coffee and would rather drink instant or buy one on the way to work, but your niece may be different. It's sort of like switching to a mid level cd player after the LP12 I suppose.

Anyway, it's an option.

No she's an ex barrista and she wants here cappuccino in the morning and it's not a pod machine she's after, just a convenient machine, that's why the Delonghi seemed the goods but the reviews from users are awfull.

can you zap it in the microwave if you don't want it cold (or is that heresy ?)

Breville bes980 is pretty awesome..

Still partially manual and 1k over budget, but stil.. :-)

But even the one i got, the bes820 is not bad.

With the built in grinder and quick warm up time, a coffee can be made 2 minutes.

And for the milk, with one of those milk frothed devices can save time to.

Simply turn on machine, chuck milk in frother, turn that on.

Grind and brew coffee.

Add the milk, and done.

Won't take more then 2 minutes, and the coffee result is pretty good.

Brevilles can be had cheap via box movers at EOFY time. I got my $1800 bes900 over 2 years ago for $1295.

Great partially auto machine and dual boiler means you can texture milk whilst extracting

I've owned my delonghi magnifica for 7yrs now. This was the full auto model like the primadonna without the funky display just typical lcd. I have been happy with it all this time and the only problem I had with my model was the two little O rings on the milk dispenser (one red silicon, the other black rubber) from over use of two to three times a day for 2-3yrs at a time would then need changing as they dont seal which leaks air instead of purging milk!

I haven't had any other problems with it though.

Most full auto coffee machine these days though that grind, pour and purge the milk are fantastic and can be had for $500 that I have witnessed and drank from in at HN when the demo ladies are there (saeco brand etc).

If you drink and like a decent coffee then I believe the auto ones are a must as they are idiot proof and when you have guests, mates, family over then they can make there own...

p.s. The little kids love baby chino's!

At the recent Food & Wine show at Jeffs Shed and whilst all the di--heads were lined up at the crowded Nespresso stand we had some coffees from the nearby near deserted Delonghi stand. We were both rather surprised by the quality from the $1500ish machine which is pretty reasonably priced considering it grinds the beans as needed, is easy to use and pretty quick.

Does the $1200 budget also include a grinder?

Thanks for the replies so far. @@Ken Tripp, yes it does include a grinder as the Primadonna has a built in one.

Just spoke to the husband of the niece and he'd like a dual boiler with built in grinder but...he says it still comes down to the fact that my niece will be in a rush in the morning with two babies to get ready for day care and her self to get ready for work and she's not going to want to muck around grinding then pulling the shot and texturing the milk...I can understand that. so it's a n auto machine I'm thinking for sure.

@@bwhitesox yes, exactly.

Just read through that link and the phenomenal score the Breville gets, I've read this before about the Breville, I'm getting an itchy finger now and eyeing my Lelit and wondering how much to sell it for!

We have had a big Saeco at work. It has just died after 47,000 cups of coffee. We are buying another one.

47,000 cups! So just managed to see out the 2 year warranty period. Do you know where you can get one for $1200.

I will get the details on the price for the new one. I think that they are about $1,800 new.

There, I've fixed it for you...

Unfortunately the original request falls into the usual triangle--quality, price, speed--choose any 2.

Thanks but we are all going a bit bonkers due to caffeine withdrawal while we await the arrival of the replacement.

It is hard to focus.

So which unusual triangle would you like it to fall into then?

Edit: Typo.

+1 for the breville - it can be programmed to switch on in the morning - if she's a good barista it will take less than a couple of minutes to pull a shot and texture milk for a cappa - that ain't too bad and the quality of coffee will be A1+ compared to any auto made cuppa
