It would be nice to be able to look at say “speakers” instead of having to look at bookshelves and floorstanders separately.

As mentioned in this thread if you click the “Loudspeakers” heading it brings up all the speakers listed.

pass.

How could this be improved? What is it that does not work for you?

In the old system, you could not "look at say speakers".

In the new system, you can. You can even subscribe to get notifications every single a time a floorstander, or a bookshelf ad is placed.

Yet now, somehow this is worse?

There's a lot of hard work gone in here and the usual amount of internet b1tching is always sure to come back.

"it's not the same"

"i can't work out how to use it"

"I know it's a beta but I won't offer constructive feedback, just whinge"

"I can't be bothered reading the provided guides and will just complain instead"

"my brain is set like concrete and can't adapt"

@Marc maybe you should have put this all on Geocities with a 1997 theme or even better moved it to usenet.

Personally I'm upset that I don't have to wade through hundreds of posts about things I care nothing about, in order to find the stuff in the categories that I do. Now I have no excuses for pulling finger around the house anymore.

Constructive criticism with an open conversation about how it can be improved is most welcome. Sometimes ideas may not be feasible within the context of coding and platform capabilities. Understand that and be gracious about the prospect that sometimes ideas cannot become realities but let's keep having the conversations with these points in mind.

We would not even have classifieds once the new forum software is forced upon us in the near future as the old cobbled-together Classifieds framework was not viable in the new release. The update was timely with the members front-of-mind at every stage. The work undertaken has preserved this much appreciated audio marketplace which is ahead of any other audio section offerings on ebay, gumtree, facetube etc.

Change is uncomfortable for some folk, but it must be faced by the platform for our collective benefit. It is supportable and patchable by the forum software writers, supportable by the site admin and moderators, secure, but most importantly a magnet to pull us all together as we enjoy this pastime.

Negative and non-constructive critique, such as "it's rubbish" or "pass" is going to have me go into bat for @Marc and all the hard work done by him, the developers, the beta testers and my fellow volunteer moderators. Maybe keep those to yourself and go crate-dive or peddle your wares elsewhere if it is so torturous.

Productive discourse is great, but the bitching stops or we will start handing out holidays. A timely reminder also that public criticism of moderators and their actions is against guidelines and will result in appropriate action.

I consider that fair warning.

So a choice between Condensed View and Expanded View then? We could likely add this feature to Category browsing.

I'm mindful we're trying to be everything to everyone, and starting to overdevelop and complicate things rather than keeping it simple.

Will give this some thought though.

Quite possibly - particularly for mobile view. Any more to an the headings on mobile an it just gets too much.

We seem to have lost my ongoing development list that was pinned up top and a handy reference where each item was being marked off as we go.

On that list was "improvements to mobile browsing - future". That will come soon.

Fortunately all the bugs and improvement ideas bar that one were already marked off.

I've kept pretty silent on some of the negative press but I really couldn't agree more @El Tel. What I don't get with the 'OMG this is the worst thing ever' crowd is the competition in this space in Australia is crap. Go use xBay or AAM 🤣 or put up the $ and dev your own. Customisation is costly and time consuming business.

As @Marc has continued to say,  the classifieds are a work in progress. If you don't like the effort going into creating a customisable platform 'pass' off to another non existent platform. That said, politely make your case for Marc to consider - he's been more than reasonable with requests as he genuinely wants the best classifieds for all.

1st day back at work after 18 months. 🤯

Hi admins,

Can you consider to include ability to sell items as bundle or selling a whole system as an option?

You can enable to choose multiple brands, multiple models under one advertising post. Lots of buyers will compare apples to apples in price history or dropped rrp, etc but when they are getting something else together which nicely match or put together, it is different story.

Thanks,

My job used to be to go into hospitality venues and work out the issues and get them pumping again. Pubs that turned over $10m a year and the like. You’d also take over some venues that had established clientele like in St Kilda that was basically full of pensioners and the like, who I loved. They never wanted any change, but the reality was that keeping 50 regular pensioners happy was driving out 1000’s of other customers. I kid you not a female would only step in the place by accident.

The business would be no more unless changes were made.
They drank a lot but they ate no food, and they put $20 through the TAB but the commission on that doesn’t even pay the staff at that rate. It’s how it goes. And funnily enough most of the regulars adjusted and enjoyed the new visitors and menus etc.

Some never came back and that happens but the business thrived and is still kicking some 20 years later.

My direction, instincts, and vision for StereoNET has gotten us to 20 years and yesterday, and today we are still the busiest we have ever been, so I'm confident in my choices. But, I have always listened to the good and the bad. And some of those suggestions are great and taken aboard. I love Max from New Amsterdam's approach, "How can I help?".

Where I do get frustrated is with those that have not given it a minute, or ask a question that has been repeatedley covered already either on the same page, or just a few back. I won't apologise for getting frustrated at that, particularly after the amount of work that has gone into this over the last 2-3 months.

It is true you can't please them all, but like @Jakeyb77_Redux's analogy above, if we have to lose half a dozen to gain a few thousand more, than that's just evolution and ensuring StereoNET can prosper for another 20 years.

As you know, two different volunteers have had this conversation with you over the last 24 hours - our belief is still the same.

You actually limit your sales exposure by bundling two products together. The system is a database of brands, model numbers, and types of products. Each of those products is creating historical data right now - and in the future we'll be able to make pricing suggestions (just like Discogs, for example) when you enter the product you wish to sell.

The system cannot accomodate more than one product in its listing ability at this stage. Remember, everything you do and the interface is a line of code working within a complex database. It's easy to make a suggestion, but some things are much more difficult to automate. The old system was a dumb system, make no mistake about that. It simply relied on text inputs, hence why the search and information was so basic.

On every ad, there is a button that says "View Member's Other Ads". If I was going to buy something from you, I might click on that to see if there was anything else I wanted too, to save on shipping and get "a deal". When you submit a product, it relies on a specific brand, a model number, and a Type of Product to categorise the ad, in addition to it being placed in a specific and relevant category. This is all designed around getting your ad exposure, showing it to the right people, and allowing keyword notifications to be triggered.

When you try and bundle a turntable and a pair of bookshelf speakers, that seriously compromises where the ad should be categorised and placed, along with causing difficulty and confusion with search notifications.

There are exceptions, for example, there is already a headphone and amplifier combination category, and product type. These are a relatively straightforward combination, but again, only really if they are both the same brand.

The new system has some limitations which we have not yet worked through, not by choice, but because we are now refining small things and tidying up very minor bugs. Some of the bigger feedback initially received has already been implemented. It is, still in Beta, afterall. But the suggestion of bundling items together requires an extensive rework of the fundamental design of the new Classifieds. It's not no, but it's definitely "not yet".

Right now, I still maintain that you have better chance of sales by listing individually. There's no reason why you can't mention the other item in your ad, and link between the two - along with some marketing speak: "See my other ads - happy to bundle and do a deal..." etc.

What I particularly like about the change to the classifieds, besides the customisable options, is Marc's inclusive approach to change. He has been proactively asking SNAers for months what they would like to see in the new classifieds - some responded and most did not. Not one person indicated they did not want change (yes double negative).

Since launching, Marc has been personally involved and boots on the ground responding to requests, usually with graciousness and patience, and yes, sometimes with frustration. This level of involvement is highly unusual in web/app design - I've never seen it in 28 years in the industry. And it's just not about the business side of things - if it were he'd have handed this onto a project manager to do. Marc's baby is maturing into something new. Exciting times.

Change has occurred. Yes, you might be frustrated (or maybe not). But there is no excuse for rudeness or curt demands.

If something doesn't work for you leave a message outlining what you want to see. I'm sure it will be considered.

Exactly!
I haven’t seen a constructive feedback not implemented unless there is a system limitation.
@Marc has been very positive to us helpers in his messaging that this is for the user’s enjoyment. And if you read this thread he’s taken many many things on board graciously.

As you would in any other thread, be kind, be open and be constructive.

I’m grateful for all the hard work being done to bring classifieds up-to-stardate🖖

Any chance of resurrection?? It was a useful point if reference.

Given the system is settling down would it be worth listing only outstanding issues?

It's gone! My own fault. No history of it now unfortunately.

There were only some "future" items remaining anyway.

The bugs have all been ironed out and this thread will close soon, likely moving instead to individual support tickets.

Awesome stuff! There are still a few 'sticky' issues on the mobile version though.

@Jakeyb77_Redux thanks for the list!

Already in progress. 🙂

Not a big thing @Marc if one comments on a classifieds item with only quotes or emojii, the activity stream will show a blank field - example as below

It’s saying it’s a low effort post. 😂😂

Haha I have no idea what that means but I left Reddit when a moderator told me why my post was declined 🙄😂😂

Not sure if this has been suggested already but it would be useful if notifications are sent for followed classifieds  items when the price has been edited - I think at the moment it's only when someone comments?

Just a suggestion, thanks.

Current issue (bug) relating to many features of Classifieds and form submissions known and logged (added to Message at top of thread).  In progress.
