Buying eggs

Featured Replies

Following my wildly successful topic on sardines I thought I would continue.

Foolishly I got involved in a domestic today.

at a friends and was asked if I checked the carton of eggs before buying them.

my response along the lines of course i do and you'd have to be &£+(;;##!? stupid not to.

turns out the partner doesn't check eggs, expiry dates on milk,  meat etc which I find unbelievable. I always check and buy the longest expiry date based on the assumption this implies freshness.

any thoughts?

With eggs, not only you check the expiry date,  open the cardboard package and inspect everyone,  you’ll find that some can be damaged….
A close friend, actually he’s my best man,  breeds chickens in his backyard.   He feeds them with grass that’s cut with a hand power lawn mower,  apparently if cut it with a petrol mower they refused to eat it as it reeks of.fumes….  The egg yokes are blood red and the egg just taste different.    We don’t buy eggs at the supermarkets any more,  I drive 20mins out on the West Side of Werribee to a egg farm and purchased 30 rough shell eggs for $9.   Best eggs ever!   And they have minimal air indicating freshness.

Milk I check the date, eggs not so much, and I don't open the carton to inspect them.

Never had a problem.

A quick swig from the carton tells me how fresh the milk is.

Milk, definitely, although the one we buy generally has a 2 week window (no lactose, lasts longer). But generally you'll always find the ones closet to 'use by' in the front.

Eggs, I generally find at least one broken one a month. And I prefer to break the seal when I'm about to use them. So I always check.

I always check eggs, mainly because there is often an already a cracked one in the carton, straight off the shelf.

With some other foods like dairy products, I look for the item with the longest use by date.

We buy ours from local farmers market … so no use by date, only that they popped out the chicken the week earlier :D

The ones from the local butcher are similar. But they only open until 1pm on Sundays (our shop day) and so we sometimes have to get them from the supermarket. But I check for cracked eggs either way...

We have 4 lovely ladies in the garden that provide them for us. One Sussex Bantam (called ED-209) and three Colombian Wyandottes (called Griselda, Cassie and Clegane - collectively referred to as the "Drug Lords"). Here are a couple of them dust bathing:

Once you have your own, you will never go back to store eggs. They really aren't much work for what they give either. It's very relaxing to just sit out there some days and just watch them bawking-it-up.

Never check

Have a wife for such tasks :)

A neighbour of a friend just took on chooks. The rats that came around ate all the wiring in my friend's car. About $5000 in repairs!

New batch installed this week.
