Wongaburra - El Tel's Listening Space

Christian and I have been chatting over the last month and whilst I'm not quite there in materials and actual panel choices yet, Artnovion did an artist's impression of my listening space based on the initial "starter for discussion" bill of materials and the 3D scans Christian performed when doing my dual sub assessment. The subs are not in the scan as I hadn't acquired them at the time.

I'm toying with the idea of going for a similar wood finish with the corner sub and bass traps as the natural oak panels on the wall on the right. I'm also thinking of going for a grey finish rather than the beige. Why the 3D scan shows my couches as beige when they are light grey is beyond me... Besides, the couches are going when the floor gets refinished in February and some leather La-Z-Boy items are coming in their place.

It's all happening slowly as the rest of the renovations must be further advanced before I get to the listening area... This is my main bathroom right now to give some sort of idea of the **** show I am living in for the foreseeable:

And here is my en suite:

  • I also have some occasional, mobile acoustic treatments to help with absorption. They seem to be present on colder days, oddly.

That looks great. They say patience is a virtue!😱

A few queries:
The wall and corner treatments would be expected, but intrigued by the extent of ceiling treatments. What is the rationale for that?

Looks like the side wall panel is a timber diffuser, but what is the corner panel material? Diffuser, absorber or both?

And, finally, what system are you installing in bathroom and ensuite?😊

Same rationale. Sound reflects off flat surfaces. So untreated ceilings are every bit the bad guy that walls are.

It's a timber absorber on the side wall. The only diffusers are on the ceiling in the middle sections above the listening position and in front of it (they are the central panels closest to the fan, bounded by absorbers at either end on the ceiling).

Corner units are bass traps (in the rendering, it is these), the more prominent items at height are actually sub traps (can't find a link for them) and are tuneable. Those are the items I am looking at changing from material finish to wood, just like the right hand side absorbers.

This operation can best be described as an "opus" Tel?

Gee wizz, what a transformation, absolutely sensational, Congratulations Tel, should set you up for life.

It will be once I get it done. Artnovion obviously took extreme poetic licence with the artist's impression as aside from changing the colour of my couch, the TV is missing and I don't even have a rack like that. Clearly, they're selling a dream 😆

I am not looking forward to the quote.

Whilst the bathrooms are still in a state of flux, I haven't been idly waiting...

I can't do much about the acoustic treatments until after the floors get done in the next couple of months, but I did move forward on a Hi-Fi rack. I was originally nosing around the Quadraspire products, but always keeping an eye on what the sponsors on here are doing has paid off. I'm currently plotting with @SonicArt for a bespoke rack, so watch this space.

Whilst waiting for all the dust-works to be done, my TT and vinyl is wrapped-up and packed away and I am missing it terribly. My plan is to be ready to set it all up at the earliest possible moment once the floors are done and I can reassemble my kit.

Great thread, have enjoyed reading and checking out the builds n stuff, look forward to more 😎

The floor stripping started today.

Still, at least the bathrooms are now finished.

The rack is in build with Mark ( @SonicArt) who is in constant comms providing me with updates.

In the meantime, whilst the outside of the house is getting some TLC too, I find myself in some kind of Stockholm Syndrome situation as a hostage to a paint brush.

Sensational Tel. This listening environment is going to be peerless!

Shifting my reply to @Bisguittin into my build thread so as not to clog-up the "What in Analogue Have You Bought Today?" thread.

Thanks Leon - it's been a mission to get this far especially with all the peripheral mini-projects going on to ensure I keep Mrs Tel sweet. But today, with the arrival of the record shelves and the new couches, the main listening area becomes functional again.

The new shelves swallowed my very modest vinyl collection and have given me expansion space aplenty.

Cables around the back are in disarray until the chair batteries are fully charged and I can disconnect all the damn wiring 🤣 :

I'll be setting up my TT as soon as I get the new Hi-Fi rack from Mark (@SonicArt).

Christian from Corsini is coming in mid-March to do final measuring-up and creating the bill of materials for Artnovion to manufacture. Production should be in Q2 and dispatched as part of Christian's quarterly supplies container from Italy at the beginning of July. We're notionally aiming for install of the acoustic treatments around September/October once the container arrives and clears customs.

WOW!!

Looking good mate. Will be keen to check it out in the flesh soon

Thats looking great Terry! Floors look amazing, love the variation in board colours, it breaks things up so as not to be too overpowering wood wise. Feeling nervous now with the racks going into that space 🥴

No need to be nervous, I'm convinced it'll be sweet as. I think the subtle variations in all the wood tones, including the messmate shelves, mean the birch is going to slide right in and look like it belongs. The big Roman blinds, rug and the couches provide a break-up to all that wood porn 🤣.

I'm waiting on a new rack which will go to one side of the TV. Then I will arrange all the kit accordingly and the TT will sit on the top shelf. For now, it is still packed away.

Impatience is setting in here at Wongaburra. @SonicArt has my racks ready for meet-up and collection, but I am laid low with a viral infection for over a week that has cattled my vision so I can't drive.

Thankfully I'm not infectious as Christian is measuring up for panels on Saturday.

All the same, it's bloody frustrating.

I've attached been home crook too, doing consulting work and writing articles and playing we with stereo, but its not fun when you have new stuff to do.

Could have been worse though, could have been your ears!

but seriously hope you are on the mend.

Christian came up this morning and we've verified all measurements.

The only last remaining question which is being reverted back to Artnovion helicopter-heads in Italy surrounds the corner bass and sub treatments. The original design had one sub trap (900mm tall) and two bass traps (600mm tall each) for each front corner. With the cornices at the top of the walls, this came down to leave a gap of about 520mm from the bottom of the treatments to the floor, leaving less than the 600mm clearance I wanted to give me a path for bigger subs in the future. The boffins in Italy are going to look at the room capture traces and see if I can get away with one of each (one sub trap, one bass trap) in each corner; or see if there is benefit in doing two sub traps in each corner instead - I can work with 2 x 900mm height units and still get the clearance I need for larger subs later.

I'm really close to getting the bill of materials and moving into the manufacturing stage now. It is quite exciting as I haven't had much ability to get out in the last 10 days due to the viral nerve infection that is limiting my ability to drive due to impact on my eyesight. As a consequence, my new racks remain uncollected 😢

Christian brought his 12 year old son along; Darien, a smashing young man with impeccable manners who was a pleasure to host.

This morning was a much needed lift for my spirits.

So the racks got dropped off last night by my wonderful Melbourne driver/fixer Kevin. He met up with Mark ( @SonicArt ) yesterday morning and picked up the racks, then dropped them to me late last night along with Mrs Tel who had been hosting a work dinner down in town.

This morning will involve lots of tea, laying out the rack components, and them assembling them.

The birch is a shade lighter than my floor which I am happy with. There are all hues of wood in this room, so uniformity is not the aim.

Wish me luck.
