I need to get a SME 3012 rewired now, does anybody know who can assist within Australia?

Brian Maddern - Decibel Hi-Fi rewired my SME using the incognito kit eliminating the old ''can'' plug. He custom made a bracket so the pivot could still slide horizontally for alignment with a fixed head shell.

reasonable cost

The plinth I made same as the Shindo size and style, has been modified for setup for two tonearms, as shown in the photo, and can be set up for most tonearms on the market.
The plinth is made of birch ply bb/bb and clear spray
Price cheaper than your import, and I can help with any tonearm you wish to installation
Pm me if you like

Mark Dohmann at Nirvana Sound (Melb) should be able to assist.

He did a great job on my 'Univector'.

Thanks for these recommendations, I was resigning myself to having to send it overseas so this is great.

Audio Grail are making a plinth for the 301. Not sure what it costs. Looks great. P

This design looks too easy to make
But the plinth design looks like for a 12" tonearm only, so if you had a 9-inch tonearm you couldn't fit it in

It's a cantilevered armboard.  that is the one good thing about it - you can adjust between 12 inch and 9 inch arms by moving the armboard further or closer to the spindle/plinth - very flexible.

BTW - lovely table and Pioneer tonearm. One of my tables is Pioneer Exclusive P3.

cheers

Oh Peter.  Yuk.  Not a fan at all.  Are they trying to be a mini micro seiki.

Gimme Steven Tyler's 301 every time.

I like the simplicity - it showcases the 301.  I'm not sure about the damping qualities but they do some excellent work on Garrard TTs.

Steven Tyler's looks good.

I have owned the EA-3 tonearm in the past which is fitted for your P-3
Currently, what you see in the photo is EA-10 which I got from P-10, Both of the tonearms look similar but can't be swapped for the turntable, We can swap the arm wand only (the straight arm wand sounds better than the S arm wand )

I used to also own the P10 - two in fact.  Quite a lot of fun swapping armwands between both tables

I looked into this recently and ended up buying one of these, waiting on it to be posted: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/185908924924

I need to get a SME 3012 rewired now, does anybody know who can assist within Australia?

Buying a plinth from here ended up being a costly mistake, my advice would be to avoid if you'd like a premium product. If you've got a Garrard 301 I would imagine that you, like me, would like a premium product. The ebay auction link works for now, however I assume it'll be taken down when the seller sees this. So for future reference and if people search for any of these terms, and when the ebay auction expires, the ebay seller name is perfect.sounds, business name is Dasacoustic or Dasacustic. His ebay store is https://www.ebay.com.au/str/dasacoustic

Long story short I received a plinth that was damaged in the post and has variations in colour.

The damage in the post was the fault of Fedex, however the seller wasn't much help. Thankfully this is minor, on the rear corner and you can only see it in certain light. There was fault on both sides for this, the plinth is heavy and wasn't packed properly with enough packing material given the weight. Obviously it was dropped by Fedex. On my side, as I work interstate/overseas and didn't have the parts I needed to put the turntable together I didn't take it out of the box for a few weeks and didn't notice the damage until too late. This fell out of the Fedex warranty period for shipping. I accepted this reluctantly as bad luck.

What I do not accept is that the 'blank' armboards that came with the plinth were obviously not painted at the same time as the rest of the plinth. They are a slightly different colour. The plinth has armboards for a 9" and 12" tonearm and I only have current plans to use a single tonearm so will need to use one of the blank armboards. Given they're a different shade of black they don't look right.

The seller is willing to "help" if I sent the plinth back to Hungary at a cost of ~$500AUD and pay for postage back to Australia at a cost of ~$299AUD. Not quite feasible for a $~1500AUD purchase. He even had the gall to tell me to get it fixed locally at my expense to resolve the matter.

While it may seem like an attractive mid-price option for a plinth, the quality and service is bad and if you're like me and want things 'just so' this won't do. I've let Imre at Dasacoustic know that I'll be posting feedback on a few forums, and that I'd welcome his feedback. I will also be sending him a link to this post. I'm happy to post photos and our entire email correspondence if anybody is interested.

I'm at a loss as to where to get this fixed and repainted. The paint job, other than being different colours, is quite good. Any suggestions local to Melbourne would be appreciated.

Edit:
Here's a picture of the armboard blanks, the one cut for a SME 3009 is the same darker colour at the plinth, the blank one is lighter:

thoughts on this? I can get it refurbed total cost of ~$1800

I have a 401 on the way already complete but really wanted a 301. Would get a new plinth made up for it. Was not going to have it painted?

Refurb cost sounds about right, it all depends on what they actually plan to do, replace.

The critical thing, from my extensive work and experience with this turntable, is isolating the arm from the motor. My advice, keep as separate and as far away as possible!

Good luck, love the white 301 btw.

On closer look, the mechanism including all springs, joints etc looks in remarkably good condition. A bit of oil/grease looks all that's needed. If the motor, once open, requires the same type of treatment, this refurb exercise might end up much cheaper than 1800. And depending how handy and brave you feel, you might be able to do all the work yourself.

The only thing left is the actual aesthetic appearance. If simple cleaning doesn't do the trick, then you'll need to source parts, eg labels, plates and the like and replace. But even that isn't a problem since there's plenty of online stores where you can get these things.

Hi @PKay and @Gandra, the guy who is selling it to me does a lot of 301/401 refurbs. He selected this clean example for me and said he will be happy to do a light clean and service. He has a lot of spare parts as well. I'm am definitely not keen to do any of the refurb myself. Much prefer to use professionals.

Was going to replace the extra screw hole with a strobe light?

I was going to get a new DAS acoustic plinth made with two tone arm mounts for this 301.

See my horror story above with DAS acoustic. I would highly recommend purchasing elsewhere.

Not sure if I replied previously, but I had been in communication myself with DAS Acoustic some time ago. All the responses were a bit too brief and vague for my liking. Your post most certainly cautioned me against proceeding with a custom plinth. Thanks for the warning!

I can highly recommend Carl Ellis in the UK - my Lenco plinth is excellent.

I understand that the wait is a long time due to demand.
