Beer: "proof that God loves us"

Featured Replies

Picked this up last night. I think most amber or dark ales I've tried have been malt driven. This one was much hoppier ( is that a word). It had a nice caramel malt flavour under the hops.

At 7% it felt like I'd drunk more than I did.MVIMG_20180823_203605.jpg

Yep, "hoppier" is most definitely a word, and also a valid descriptor for a lot of hoppy beers.

Based on the name of the beer, I suspect you should also be tasting some nutty characters (some sort of nut flavour/ dryness).

I visited the Bent Spoke last time I was in Canberra, and was keen to visit ever since I saw it under construction during a visit to Canberra to judge at the Homebrew National titles a few years back.

Great beer, great brewer, great venue.

Thanks @Uncle Seth .   You're probably right about the nuttyness. I'll have to go back for another one to make sure. ?.

Unfortunately my palate doesn't extend much past 'hoppy' or 'malty.  I got right into homebrew a few years back and learned to pick a few hop varieties by taste. I remember taking a shine to Amarillo hops

Bcak to the Red Nut. Another thing I liked about it was, on opening the wide mouth can, you could see some of the sediment that had been disturbed.  I like beer that hasn't been filtered to buggery. #realbeer

<snips>Will be in South Oz soon so will try to chase up some new IPA's while there.

Any Croweaters know of some good bottleshops for small brewery beers and independents?

A bit of a ways (but not a long way) from Glenelg is the Wheatie--the Wheatsheaf Hotel (http://wheatsheafhotel.com.au) where they have their own "brewing corps" as well as a huge selection on tap.

You can both taste and take-away. Open fires, live music, comfy chairs, no pokies.

Yep. Another vote for the Wheaty. Fantastic beers ,mostly brewed on the premises. No pokies and fantastic live bands which are often free. Nice friendly atmosphere and no drunk bogans

RT. You already know that we're both on the same wavelength with most things.

Further proof if needed is this: no drunk bogans

So I take it that it is slighty hoppy ?

I might have a crack at brewing that, if I can source those hops.

The results are in. Mine turned out a bit darker and less aromatic due to reduced dry hopping. Two nice, vaguely similar beers in those glasses ?

I went looking for more hoppy dark ales. This one is a porter. IMG_20180825_211302.jpg

Now this is nice. Very easy drinking. I don't know who comes up with the silly blurb on the back though.IMG_20180825_224524.jpgIMG_20180825_224547.jpg
