Kaynin Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 (edited) Cheater. lol Yes, based on your advice DQ I bought a Schiit Vali, am hoping will arrive before Xmas as a self-gift! I'll add my Shure 1440's & Sherwood 5 CD carousel CDC5090R and it's done (for now). I know there can be improvements (as always), and synergy may even be non-existent - I bought blind and haven't even heard it yet...but it's going to be better than what I have in the study right now - Which is why my loudspeakers in the lounge play so late at night. Am thinking I'll get a few points from the wife for this purchase! I can't wait to wipe the dust off my CD's and stack them into my office desk... Thanks again DQ...I think this is the ticket at this point in time Edited December 20, 2014 by Kaynin 2

Equaliser Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Did you buy the Vali blind or audition them first?
Kaynin Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Nah blind. Based on your recommendation. So if it's no good I'm be PMing you......  It will be interesting to see how it all goes. Will definately be better than the computer speakers. I'm hoping to upgrade everything late next year, so will go through the auditioning and reaserach process then...
Equaliser Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Well they are quite recommended and well regarded for the price almost everywhere you read online and look, I heard it for myself based on other people recommendations and liked what I heard. 1
Kaynin Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Yep, read a couple of reviews as well, the price was right so thought, what's to lose?

Kaynin Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 (edited) It appears Christmas has come early for some... CD spinner is years old, cans a couple of years old, with the Vali being the brand spanker - Edited December 23, 2014 by Kaynin 5
Kaynin Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 Absolutely mate, been running it in for the last 5 hours. Very easy to listen to, bass is a bit more forward than my T787 which gives it a better balance to the overall sound. Obviously a fair bit of listening to come, but am very pleased. Aesthetically a nice clean small design and a solid build. Bloody powerful too... The Shure's are quite a bright headphone, and it appears the amp has softened it somewhat, which I'm pleased about. Of course these are initial impressions, but I'm very happy with my first ever headamp, and your recommendation. 1

mwhouston Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 (edited) Gives me some ideas. Edited December 24, 2014 by mwhouston 1
awty Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 I made my own for streaming spotify through the phone, sometimes if you want something you have to make it yourself. hope thats OK? Amp is a kit built Oatley K272C with 2x 9 volt batteries and 2x AA's, gets a bit buzzy in between songs, but settles down once the music starts. Headphones were built from scratch using a 40mm 16 ohm headphone driver, bought from Lucas online store. Phones are quite comfortable, custom built to fit my head and sound surprisingly good. 2
Pauley Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 Cool. Looks like it used to belong to Captain Jack Sparrow 1
Saxon Hall Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 Fantastic. Looks like something this mob would build 2
MKSOUND_HT Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 awty - Those are seriously awesome looking headphones and amp. I am blown away, I want I want haha 1
mwhouston Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 I have been using the Oatley K311B (not in production yet) Class A descrete comment HP amp for my serious listening. I have been generally using my new Beyerdynamic 770s (250ohm). The combo sounds excellent. But yesterday I dragged out the new Sennheiser 700s 33ohm). The bass was awful, fluffy, woolly and undefined. So I tried my AT Airs 700s (33ohm) and strict a better combo. Not sure why but I think the K311B may like highe impedance phones than 33ohm though the Airs sounded very good. I'm going to add a low\high impedance switch to the amp to drop a 100ohm is series with low impedance phones. The amp has lots of drive and gian so losing some to the series resistor should not be a problem.
awty Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 I have been using the Oatley K311B (not in production yet) How far off Mark?
mwhouston Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 I have asked Oatley a few times when will it be in production for no answer. I have the mobile phone number of owner because I helped with the creation of a number of audio-based Oatley kits. I'll just have to ring to get an answer. The circuit developed for the HP amp is unique and I'm told has not been done before. It uses two power FETs which are on all the time therefore Class A. Runs hot.
nickonsound Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 awty, that's a pretty nice concept. Love it
meraias Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Ah, hadn't been reading SNA for awhile, congrats Kaynin, Oh Vali... !! I owned 2 other mini amps ( FiioE12A and Herus ) , both fall short in terms of air and sound stage to the Vali. It certainly have a very impressive sense of space and depth at this price : ) , tonally quite balance over the range, at an agreeable positional distance, good lower end, and the extension in sound is excellent, and even drives orthos. No doubt, one of the best valued of all times. My few complains on Vali would be ultra sensitive microphonics, like its so sensitive that I hear the ticks every time I swap my headphones or accidentally shake the table. Second is hiss, definitely not for IEMs, my se846 hiss like its raining outside, and my AT cans hiss too. Tho, the K701 performed beautifully, which is my sole pairing with the Vali. Thirdly, slight hole in the upper bass, and is a bit slow. Vali gets confused with fast paced musics, probably coz its tube based, and the beats timing doesn't sound that precise and lacked some impact that defines its intended articulation and beat separation. The lower bass however is very good, could do with jazz and classical acoustics, but sometimes, I find that my other mini solid states do better keeping my music tight when I need them to be. 1
Equaliser Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 (edited) EDIT: Just partial of what I own. Some Stax Some orthos (planars) Will take a another shot soon with more stuff. Edited January 20, 2015 by DefQon 6
