lamtran
Definitely the Exorcist. That movie still messes with my mind now, 15 years down the track. I don't think any other movie has scared the bejebus out of me since.
proftournesol
the absolute scariest was the clip of George Dubya sayin "yer either with us or against us". next to that, the scariest thing I've ever seen on the screen is The Shining. It starts slowly, the tension slowly builds, reality becomes confused with illusion, threat is implied, then explicit. Jack Nicholson plays himself, what could be scarier:)
DRC
Evil Dead scared the crap out of me first time I saw it Me too, I was maybe 16. Watched it on video. With my parents. And Grandmother. They were not impressed. 28 Days Later is a well done scary movie, not at all a teenager slasher flick.
leck
Depends what you mean by scary. For me, 'the thing' really hits the nail on the head for what an intelligent thriller/horror should be. If you are more into the shock/gore/tortureporn type junk that is flooding the market: - saw 1-6 - hostel 1/2 - wolf creek - audition (wish i could unwatch this) - martyrs - antichrist - frontier - inside are some of the more recent ones that have horror fans raving. The only one of those I have watched myself though is audition and I really wish I hadn't . Some of this stuff you just can't un-see
Nigel
Psycho. (Must see wolf creek). Any film that builds intrigue and tension followed by sudden action, get the heart a-pumpin'. Silence of the Lambs had its moments, but it was an allround great film.

Scariest in the fact it was ever allowed to be made...Australian film called 'Blood Moon'......IMHO the worst piece of cinema ever...and i do mean EVER.....even had a 'fright break' in the middle so you could get yr money back if you 'couldnt handle the scary ending'.......i should have got my money and ran....was complete garbage......having said this, i still remember it 25 yrs later..lol Cheers

Mr Smith
Here is one from 1977 that manages to slip by , probably because of its age, but still holds up today and I notice there is a remake happening at the moment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suspiria Cheers Wayne
RichardN
The Exorcist. I guess it's an oldie. I was way too young when I saw it and it scared the shite out of me. If I was to watch it again now it may seem kinda lame; maybe...Cheers, EK Isn't that funny, I saw it when I was 12 and it scared the bejessus out of me. The light was on for about a week after that. Alien is a goodie, dark, suspenseful, death, carnage......., Aliens a good sequel (which makes a change for sequels in general IMO)
proftournesol
it's a TV show not a movie, but I think that the Dr Who episode "Blink" was very scary. Anyone seen that?
Grumpy
I have Arachnophobia; there for Arachnophobia was one of the scariest films I've seen. If I was to watch it again now it may seem kinda lame; maybe...Cheers, EK It would still scare the shite out of you Ed. When I was in my teens and in a 'horror' watching phase, it blew all other movies away. And I saw it again a couple years ago, after 20 years, and it was still so bloody scary. I think the original The Ring (Japanese version) is well worth a vote. It's a scary movie, and more so than the Hollywood version, but I think that's because in my prejudice I see Japanese women as sweet and innocent! Guest Muon
It's interesting what scares some people, and not others. For exampled, I have never been "Scared" by movies like wolf creek, that movie (and those types) just sickened me rather than scared me, very different. *Psycho!*
Gruesome, and boring, in my opinion. I don't find slasher movies at all scary, they are so obviously fake. For a movie to be really scary, there has to be a strong element of suspense, where it builds a mood of anticipation of something awful about to happen, but you never know when. exactly, gore and violence does not = scary. Now if you want to really scre the hell out of yourself, dig round and fins a movie called 'The Changeling" (not the recent one with Angelina Jolle in it) but rather a pretty old movie with George C SCOTT in the lead. He is a guy who has recently lost his wife and child in a horrific car crash and has moved into a rental home to grieve and sort himself out. Now this movie really does use some brilliant suspense building techniques, nothing 'jump out at you' **** cheap stuff, but really over the lenght of the movie and the 'little' things that happen to this guy...well let me tell you I was watching it year ago ,middle of the day and I was shitting myself. I turned it off several times. You get sucked into thinking something is happening but in reality something entirley differnet is happening..I cant say too much without giving it away. And its not one of those slack "oh it was all a dream' twist either, he really is being haunted, just not the way you figure it..maybe I say too much already. ...heads off to track this one down again//// Another oldie but a goldie the original version of the Haunting and The innocence will get the hair on the back of your neck up on end pretty well also. The modern ones like Excorcist yeh ok that was pretty frightening in its day and Romeros original Night of the living Dae had its moments also, but The Cahngeling' still sticks in my mind as a movie that really did send chills down my spine. p.s justdid a search on Ezy DVD and this is the movie but alas its out of stock.. http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/791821 *SPOiLER ALERT pps dot read the synopsis as it has a spolier alert invovled.....angers me when they do that...its part of the twist in the movie...grrrrr Edited November 4, 2009 by *Psycho!*
