  1. CYRUS CDXt Signature CD Player Sounds beautiful a great high end quality disk spinner in excellent condition at a great price. Also available at a discount as part of a complete Cyrus system in the Pinned ads The CD Xt Signature is a dedicated CD transport which produces audiophile sound quality. It is manufactured with a range of performance enhancing techniques and components, including an evolved version of our Servo Evolution technology. Two separate power supplies provide huge reserves of power, which eliminates the need for a PSX-R2. The sound produced by the CD Xt Signature is truly stunning, providing a room filling wide and high soundstage. Listed elsewhere
  2. I think this is a very good, yet controversial topic to discuss, firstly, don’t get me wrong, I adore CD music as well, I solely would like to throw a thread to make discussion, that’s it. Let’s look at this thing “ objectively “, normally CD players got sampling rate at 44.1KHz/16bit for PCM data, music streamers nowadays got sampling rate at 192KHz/24bit or higher for PCM or DSD data(so-called “ Hi-Res “ audio), so given the sampling rate comparison, it seems that a music streamer literally serves better sound quality than a CD player, right? However, if that’s a damn fact, how come still lots of people out there fighting for which is better for music playing, so CD player does have its audio merits, shorter data transmission path, connect to a DAC then to speakers, easy and fun, but as mentioned, Hi-Res audio got higher sampling rate, which indicates that it’s got more music details, more music data stored, so it’s understandable one should gear up more equipment to play this music data through a music streamer properly. As one might wonder, why bother making listing to music such a complex job, fairly good point, lets’ do some simple pros and cons then. *CD Music* Pros: Easy to apply, and serves fair sound quality, immersive and loveable. Cons: One CD can’t serve many songs, lacking flexibility and convenience, due to lowers sampling rate, some music detail might be ignored. *Streaming Music* Pros: Versatile choices, easy to obtain, listening to different genres to fit different mood in seconds, more details and dynamics. Cons: Somewhat difficult to understand how to play it “ right “, too many gears to equip, certainly cost higher than a CD system (if you are a extreme audiophile). Generally speaking, I don’t actually see which conquers which lol, everyone has his/her own taste, no? if you like it easy and “ less technological “, CD would be adequate indeed; if you like it challenging and “ more audiophile-like “, streaming music is your pal. For me, Vinyl is a whole other level, people adore its quintessential spirit, it’s gonna last forever as long as people still treasure this divine audio essence, but it’s just too expensive and way harder to get the desired one lol… Personally speaking, as a dude in his early 30’s, I’ve been in love with CD music for sure, it’s classic, it’s cool, it’s the ancestor of digital music, but as the innovative technology keeps cornering me with its appealing convenience, I failed to be loyal to my CD soul… I stated to adopt streaming audio system 3 years ago, yes, at first it was hard to understand what the heck is going with all the “ new stuff “, such as music server, network switch, linear power supply, even the audio cable for network and power connections, let along the audio operating app, I was like, oh man I don’t think I’ll be able to learn all this shxt, but my curiosity of the freaking “ Hi-Fi “ and “ Hi-Red “ drove me to learn and try, well, you reap what you sow, after 1 year, I finally geared up my own audio system… Was it perfect? Hell no. Was it lousy? It’s alright, Was it worth learning? YES, so now I can write this article, no? lol… Anyways, I do enjoy listening to music via a streamer, it’s damn convenient and versatile with the whole different streaming services, but, I still listen to CD music every now and then, it’s still got its spirit actually, cuz some music does actually perform better via CD player, it’s classic, it’s lovable, so does expert music streamer outrun CD player, my answer is 70% YES, 30% NO! Care to leave a comment and let me know what you think about it?
  3. I’ve got a Shanling scd-t200c tube CD player that powers up ok but does not operate with a blank display. Technician has replaced IC with no success. Im in Australia, suggestions on if it’s salvageable with another display board or post as is for parts? Otherwise it’s in almost perfect condition. Paul.
  4. Couldn’t miss box of cds, see pic below, on the djb listening room floor. Must be a thousand in there. Snuggled next to vinyl Cassandra. No, not a deceased estate acquisition this time - but I do understand source was no longer able to afford to live in Melb. He’s lucky-dipping the audio experience: hand grabs whatever deep within the box, plays a track & tosses it into a keep pile or toss pile. Latter pile was growing fast & I’d bet will soon be generally available.
  5. Hi All, I'm having trouble with my Rotel slot load CD player (RCD1570) It's not pulling discs in properly, makes a little bit of noise and jerks/jolts them a bit. It doesn't happen all the time, but mostly when inserting rather than ejecting a disc. any ideas??
  6. Not sure if this is the right board, apologies if it isn't. I'm looking for some sleeves for my growing CD collection, for everything that is anything but a standard replaceable jewel-case. Regular 4-6 panel digipaks are of course the main culprit, but there are other larger, multi-disc digipaks and digibooks that are a lot thicker in my collection which I'd need something else for. The Blade Runner, Emperor and the two Celtic Frost CDs in the pic below are what I'm talking about; I'd also like to sleeve anything with a slipcase as well. Basically if it's cardboard on the outside, I want to protect it. Does anybody have experience with any sleeves / bags which they could point me to?
  7. Head to down to Lulie Tavern this Saturday and Sunday (11 & 12 May) from 12-4pm . There will be 16,000 CDs and 2,000 DVDs for sale all for $5 a pop with bulk discounts. Pop, rock, blues, jazz, classical you name it. A large section of the collection used to belong to ABC Darwin. The address is 225 Johnston street in Abbotsford. https://www.facebook.com/events/1003233913215300/
  8. I am cleaning up some cases, and have been using Orange Power. I remember this did a great job on some old stickers on my PS1 game cases, although the caveat is it did stuff up 2 or 3 (out of over 100) and make them cloudy. Got some original 'swirl' Vertigo Dire Straits CDs in, with the original plain cases, and just stuffed them using Orange Power last night - both went cloudy. hmm... what do use that works (on everything)? And what about your actual CD's - what do you use to clean those?
  9. So I put Psychadelic Pill into the tray of my Arcam FMJ multi-player, since Tonight's The Night for a trip to the Entertainment Centre... More of that later, perhaps. Anyway, to the original point... Sound only from the left speaker. Hmmm, odd, system was working fine with the PVR during breakfast. Try a DVD in the Arcam - same thing, sound only from right speaker. Move Young disc to other DVD multiplayer - a Panasonic - and no problem, sound from both channels. Tried checking the Arcam menu settings for any possible problems (mono? left channel off? some sort of 5.1 muck up?) but nothing there - same problem occurred when I altered menu settings and put them back. Finally, I switched the RCA connectors around on the Arcam end of the link, tried the Pill disc and same again - sound from right speaker only. That's odd! Is there a problem with the amp, then? So I put the connectors back at the Arcam end and moved them from the CD input on the amp (an Arcam Alpha 10, btw) into the Auxiliary inputs. Sound from both channels now! Ok, probably a problem with the CD input circuit in the amp. Now to test the amp CD input. I move the tuner connectors into the CD input - sound from both channels. Whisky Tango Foxtrot??? Put tuner back into Tuner input, sound from both channels. Put CD interconnects back into CD input and.. sound from both channels again! Ok, great, it appears there is nothing wrong, but I have a nagging feeling that whatever was wrong has not necessarily gone away, rather has just gone into hiding and could pop its ugly head up at any moment.... So, can anyone either pick apart my logic here or - preferably - offer a plausible explanation why the Arcam CD player was playing up? I hate when problems just go away without reproducing in other tests.
  10. I'm about to head over to the HT and compare two cds. Both are Deep Purples Machine Head but one is made right here in Oz and the other is made in Japan. Last week I remembered a few comments made by various people about not buying Australian cds, I had filed those comments away but not really thought about them until I decided to buy a copy of Machine Head and did a search for it on ebay. When I saw the Japanese disc I remembered another comment (from Willco I think) regarding the **** and how they don't dynamically compress their cds. That has to be a good thing, right? I'm not sure how common this knowledge is but I thought I'd give it a try for myself, so here goes! I'll be back later to report my findings.
  11. So I'm listening to Alicia Keys As I am, and I can clearly hear the same kind of crackle noise that is part of what I remember hearing when listening to records, back in the day. Dido does it also in her albums, on a few tracks. An addition of a low level constant hiss in a few tracks, it's so clear it has to be put there on purpose. So like, what's up with that? Is there some psychology to this. Turns me off actually, do some like this noise, does it create an effect that enhances something else? I don't know, seems sheer lunacy to me.
  12. I have always been cynical about many of the hifi 'tweaks' and accessories floating around. Especially CD mats selling for hundreds of dollars that claim to enhance sound. Because it sounds implausible that a piece of 'magical stuff' sitting on top of a CD could change anything, I decided to give it a go. The theory seems to be that the mat prevents stray light from the CD player laser being scattered and bounced around in the player. Plus the mat also stops vibrations...MAGIC! MAT ONE: A piece of a fabric Woolworths green shopping bag taped to a CD spacer from a 100 pack of CD's with double sided tape. It looked just like the ones being raved about. We have lift off ...not. Despite my wish for it to do something amazing, I couldn't hear any difference. MAT TWO: Back to the drawing board. Silicone!!! That should do it. I found a flat silicone oven mat in a cooking store for a couple of dollars and cut it to replicate a CD. It seemed to muffle the sound slightly, which may have been caused by the weight of the mat plus the fact that it was probably out of balance. MAT THREE: Why not glue some felt to the back of a CD spacer? The only felt I could get was blue, but the theory was they needed to be green to absorb IR rays. The result was that it didn't really achieve anything. Disappointed, I gave up for a while and put it all down to another hifi myth. MAT FOUR: I came across a source of self adhesive green felt from Lincraft in an A4 pack for a couple of dollars, cut it out using an old CD as a template then carefully stuck in onto another CD spacer. I think there are only 4 or 5 on a CD spindle so I was running out of ammunition. I loaded the CD player and placed the mat on top with the felt facing the CD and sat down for a listen. Nothing magical seemed to happen but as I listened to full tracks I realised that the sound was different and seemed 'nicer' but there was nothing I could put my finger on until I played the CD again without the mat. After many AB tests I realise the sound was much more involving and there were subtle details in live recordings that I had never heard before. Now I can't listen to CD's without the mat. Experts claim it's imagination because I WANTED to believe it sounded better. Maybe, but I also wanted Mats 1, 2 and 3 to sound better too. They DIDN'T! I believe the transparency of my system allowed me to hear the difference and I may not have been able to with a run of the mill gear. My gear isn't expensive, but to my ears and everyone who has experienced it, the sound it produces is 'real'. Not loud, not bassy, not spectacular ...just real and involving. I have stopped mucking around with tweaks for the moment because I can't stop listening to the music instead of 'sound'. CONCLUSION: Give it a go if you have a good quality top loading CD player. GEAR: Rega Apollo R CD player with good heavy interconnects that didn't cost a fortune. Transcendent Sound Ground Grid valve pre amp (self built) Transcendent Sound 'Son of Beast' 15watt output transformerless valve amp (self built) VAF DC-X Gen 4 towers (self built from kit)
  13. Hi guys,I was browsing through some CD's on eBay,and some of them are just so expensive.I'm talking about regular ,new,CD's here. I still buy CD's(i dont collect CD's though),i love the convience, the sound and the fact i get to own something, other than downloading just a song, with no info.I hope CD's never die out.If i want music for my ipod ,i rip with it EAC,load lossless onto iTunes and i'm off! My first thought is that the company's are making them so expensive because they are trying to shift people who buy them over to vinyl-because vinyl is selling well or the store in just a ripoff merchant. What are your thoughts on why they are so expensive? Here is an example by an online store based in Adelaide. Black Sabbath 13 LP. approx AU$35 in a record store. Black Sabbath 13 CD approx AU$40-75! ,now its does say "import" but what of it? There are alot of title's around the AU$35-50.
  14. Let's make CD great again! XRCD, K2HD, Ultra CD, UHQCD, etc. With a recent purchase of an awesome CD/SACD player from another SNA member, I've begun to re-look at redbook CDs, particularly these: XRCD, XRCD2, XRCD24, K2CD, Ultra CD, UHQCD, etc. I know that SACD and HDCD involve hardware differences, but these other "formats", XRCD, XRCD2, XRCD24, K2HD, Ultra CD, UHQCD, are nothing more than different mastering processes, and the final result is still a standard Red Book CD, containing 16bit/44.1kHz audio data, but the publishers do charge an arm and a leg more than the original publisher of the album or music. Questions: 1) Do these CDs really sound better than their original versions? Or they simply make them different to justify the price they charge? 2) Are the differences, assuming better sound, worth the premium price that's being charged for them? 3) Are the "improvements", assuming there are, in accordance with the original artistes' and producers' intentions? 4) Are there certain ones that are consistently superior, e.g. Ultra CD, or are we looking at mostly a hit-and-miss scenario I'm hoping that members who have experienced these can share their opinion. Many thanks in advance.
  15. Smiths Alternative is hosting a record fair this Saturday at 10am. See the following for details http://www.smithsalternative.com/events/lp-records-fair-27527?d=18%2F02%2F2017+10%3A00%3A00+AM
  16. I'm trying to find out if Evanescence's self titled album has different mastering on any of its 7 different releases. I was told of a site where I could check mastering and/or compression levels of different songs a while back but I've managed to forget what it is called. Could anybody help, I like the album but the compression level is depressing so I'm hoping I can find a superior version of it. I have the original wind up/EMI 2011 release.
  17. Hi all, I'm about to acquire a shiny new Rotel RA-1592 integrated amp to get a bit more oomph out of my KEF Q700s, and was wondering if there's any advantage to getting a nice matching CD player like the soon-to-be-released Rotel RCD-1572. I have a few hundred CDs, but no dedicated player (just an ageing Samsung BD player I've been using as a transport). Considering the mid-fi nature of my stuff, would I see any benefit in going with the Rotel unit (other than the aesthetic matchy-matchy one)? I have no particular interest in SACD so needn't make that leap in pricepoint, and while I'm open to the idea of an OPPO UDP-205, I don't NEED 4k BD that badly either. Thoughts?
  18. I bought a second hand Yamaha CD-N301 Natural sound CD player to replace my old faithful Yamaha carousel aka, anchor weight (which has just died) that I used upstairs. While most of today's purchases were analog in nature, this unit sounds pretty good for the money, so why not a digital thread along the lines of, dare I say, analogous to the ever popular What have you bought today? for people to post their digital purchases, such as CDs, FLAC, CD players etc? [or is that just rhetorical?]. While I have sort of checked to see if such a thread existed, I couldn't find on as such. I am sure admin etal. will correct/move/delete this if this is incorrect. PS the CD was in the tray when I connected it up to the system.
  19. Hi All, This is a totally random question but I was wondering if the collective knowledge of the forums could help me out. About 10 years ago, I got wooden CD-storage boxes from IKEA. They fit about 60 CDs, and have cut out handles in the plyboard on the ends for carrying them. I can't for the life of me remember what the product is called. I can get photos from home, but I was wondering if anyone knew what this product was, and whether or not it is still available. Cheers

  24. Item: CD Player Price Range: $200-$300 Item Condition: New or Used Extra Info: I have a friend in his early sixties who is struggling to make ends meet. He has just found out that his wife has cancer for the third time but now it's terminal. She doesn't have long. Music is a solace for him and his 1970's pioneer cd player has broken down. He would like me to try and fix it, but I would like to buy him a CD player to replace it. I was thinking something like a Marantz Cd6003 but I don't really know. Ideally I'd like to buy him an entire hifi system as his is really run down, but I'm unable to do that at this point. @Juicester If you can help spread this around I'd be grateful. If anyone can help please pm me. I'd love to help him out. James
