  1. Took this out for a spin.... and wow... http://peteswrite.blogspot.sg/2014/11/astell-ak240-hd-audio-player-review.html The Rolls Royce of portable music players... The iPod is the ubiquitous portable player of any budget, and has the lower end market pretty much sealed up. But what if you are a discerning audiophile that wants to have go at something that plays your lossless music with the same resolution and definition you are accustomed to at home? For those in this position, there are many options that will cost many times the price of that iPod, and will need better cans or IEMs than those commonly associated with the iPod, but here we have one of the more premium ones in the form of the Astell & Kern AK240 HD-audio player. First the technical blurb: http://www.astellnkern.com/eng/htm/ak240/ak240_feature01.asp It offers DSD playback, a micro SD slot, 256 Gb of hard disk space, and a balanced output as well as the usual 3.5mm headphone out. The DAC uses a Cirrus Logic CS4398 chip. It retails for around 2000 Euros or under $3300… For that you are probably expecting some serious fidelity, and it’s quite a device, with a hewn from a single piece of metal heft, and it looks a little like a pocket camera when you first pick it up. It supports FLAC, WAV, ALAC, AIFF, MP3, OGG, APE, AAC, DFF, and DSF music formats. There’s a touchscreen for naviation as well as play, volume up and down buttons and a wheel if you don’t like the touchscreen. I used it with some basic cans like the Sennheiser HD 414, UE Superfi and later tried it with the Beyerdynamic DT 880 and others. It performs well with the less demanding cans and IEMs but it had some difficulty driving the DT 880, and you won’t be using this combination on the road anyway. The impression was that of a very neutral sound, with an even tone, and no emphasis of any part of the frequencies, and will go well with warm to neutral systems. You get plenty of details and personally I am fond of open cans rather than IEMs, and it’s pretty nice with the expanded soudstage and details. IEMs will do nicely on the move though, and you get some very decent bass extension. I also compared it to the headphone stage of my Marantz PM 11 and NA 11, and there was little to choose between them, with the two Marantz systems more capable of driving tough to drive cans, and a slightly warmer sound. The interface is simple, but it does not work with the iTunes / Apple environment, so beware if you are coming from an iTunes setup. So will you part with more than three grand to get this? It depends a lot on who you are and how demanding you are of your portable music listening experience. Most of the average Joe consumer won’t understand the need for such high fidelity, but the discerning listening with higher demands will enjoy this and find that the money was well spent. The noise level is very low, and you can get a decent run from the internal batteries (about 10 hours) and you really eke every ounce of music out of that recording, allowing you the luxury to take your collection of music on the road. But the main caveat is the word luxury I guess… it’s as expensive as 10 iPod Classics, and does it sound ten times better? Well, not really, but that’s life in the world of diminishing returns in high end music. If the price doesn’t deter you, this is one very solid piece of equipment. 2. Two new UHD players being launched, hopefully high enough quality to fill the Oppo gap. I can't see anything about an Australia launch yet though. https://www.whathifi.com/au/news/tech-newcomer-reavon-launches-two-high-end-ultra-hd-blu-ray-players
  3. Hi, I'm new, my first post here, sorry if I missed something obvious, but I wonder why Emby isn't mentioned here. I did a search, nothing on Emby or Kodi, which seems odd. My 2c, I have bought and used many commercial media centres, and had given up on those after many playback and streaming issues some time ago and moved to Kodi. But Kodi, just kept having issues, not to mention requiring a fairly powerful box to drive it at decent speeds. I came across Emby (as it was a supported app on my LG tv) and after trialling it with no success, gave up, and went back to kodi, but more Kodi crashes later, I tried again. With the right playback options set, I now run Emby Server on an SBC (Odroid C2) and it streams everything from my 40TB NAS to the LG TV, including 4K content in native format(s). The Tv plays then all, including DTS etc sound. In the movie room I have an AppleTV which also has the Emby App on it, to drive the JVC DLA1 projector and VAF 7.1 system, again, awesome. So far so good, and the WAF is high. Surely I'm not the only Emby user here?
  4. Hi friends I tried searching for a thread on this, but I was unsuccessful, so if it exists, please feel free to merge this.. I've been trying to locate a region free BR player, and apart from the Laser Brand model, which I last bought 3 years ago, is there anything else? Is it really based on an old Sony model? It's also been harder to track this model down, but I was hoping there will be some other options? Preferably in NSW / Sydney.. Thanks everyone
  5. Hey all, I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to get a slot-load multi-format blu ray player for my tv. I don't want to use a PS4 or an Xbox since it will need a separate controller, I'd prefer to stick to using my tv remote. Slot-load is important for me for aesthetic reasons, to place it vertical behind the mounted tv. Thanks.

  7. Hello, I am not even sure if it is possible and love to get some advice if I may. Does anyone know how to connect Blu-Ray Disc/DVD player to iMac 27" (2011 model)? I just would like to watch some live concert DVDs/Blu-rays Discs before heading to bed while doing internet browsing. iMac 27 used to have internal DVD ROM but I have replaced it with with SSD to improve performance long time ago and no longer have it any longer. I have spare Sony BDP-S370 to use at the moment hence checking the possibility. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
  8. Item: CD Player Price Range: $200-$300 Item Condition: New or Used Extra Info: I have a friend in his early sixties who is struggling to make ends meet. He has just found out that his wife has cancer for the third time but now it's terminal. She doesn't have long. Music is a solace for him and his 1970's pioneer cd player has broken down. He would like me to try and fix it, but I would like to buy him a CD player to replace it. I was thinking something like a Marantz Cd6003 but I don't really know. Ideally I'd like to buy him an entire hifi system as his is really run down, but I'm unable to do that at this point. @Juicester If you can help spread this around I'd be grateful. If anyone can help please pm me. I'd love to help him out. James
  9. Hi all, I'm looking for a good, affordable option for a CD player for my home stereo (probably up to $100 max at this point). I would love something that would hold a few CD's (to keep my wife happy, so she has minimal interaction with everything!) However a single disc player would be fine too. Any suggestions on where to go, what to look for? Or anything for sale here? Thanks in advance.
  10. Allo has the Usb Bridge and the Digione. I went for the latter as I have a dac that does not have usb input. This product is so cheap and got excellent reviews so I bought it to check it out. It has absolutely delivered to all the claims and reviews. I stronly believe that nothing in this price range can beat it. I used for a few weeks and then an Auralic Aries came up for purchase - I could not resist and settled on that. Excellent info and reviews here: https://www.allo.com/sparky/digione-player.html I wanted to keep it for one of my other systems, but I need to declutter and pay school fees. Pictures: Please let me know if you want, but it looks like the one on the website I linked.

  18. Item: Cary 303/200 HDCD/CD Player 230vac Location: Gosford Nsw Price: $1175.00 Item Condition: Good Reason for selling: Retiring audiophile Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal plus fees COD Only Extra Info: This player has been highly modified by our own George Stantcheff with the addition of triple stacked AD844 as I/V, as per the thread here on DIY Audio - http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-line-level/227677-using-ad844-20.html "Couple of days ago we compared my Cary 303/200 using just the I/V of the AD844, up against the Thorsten Losetch designed AMR CD77 (TDA1541 double crown) that uses Thorsten's special designed I/V stage which I believe is tube based, output impedance <100ohms, so a good match with the Lightspeed as is the Cary. I was expecting the AMR to be better, just by it's reputation and the designer behind it. 3 of us within 20sec thought the Cary was a clear winner, top to bottom, front to back and side to side, and it remained that way for the rest of the session, the owner of the AMR was mute and stone faced and said nothing for the 1.5hrs of A/Bing, and probably saddened by the result, the listening session which went for 4hrs, the last 2.5hrs was the Cary only. The system was my Lightspeed Attenuator feeding 2 x Halcro DM-78 monoblocks (input impedance 100kohms) pushing a pair of Wilson Watt puppy 8's This proved what I've been hearing that this AD844 as an I/V is something very, very special when used as I've done with no feedback" This player is as close to "State of the Art" (if there's any such thing) as I've heard under $20k. Due to the mods, the balanced connectors no longer operate. Only being sold due to the owner of the last several years retiring from the hobby. Complete with orig remote & manual. Will pack & ship worldwide at buyers cost. Photos: Advertisements without photos of the actual item will not be approved.

  20. I am considering moving on my Cambridge Audio 751BD Upscaling Blu-ray player. Unit is located in Brisbane. I have no problem arranging and including shipping to a metro area nationwide included in the price. Unit was $1,299 1-2 years ago when bought. Looking for $650 inc delivery. Unit is absolutely like new, all parts present. Plays international Blu-rays. Will come in original box with manuals, remote, etc. All features and functions 100% working, no scratches or any visual, physical or operating defects. Potential reason for sale: to fund Oppo BDP-105D that I'm considering which I want for the 32bit DACs and "4k" upscaling. Sonically this unit is impressive, I run analogue audio out as you get 5 x Wolfson 24-bit DACs across 7.1 channels that was as opposed to I think just 1 that runs across if you use HDMI. It loads fast and you will still get many years out of it. Latest firmware is loaded on it. Review the specs for yourself.... http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/products/azur-751bd-universal-upsampling-blu-ray-player

  22. Item: OPPO BDP-93 Blueray Player Location: Perth WA Price: $280 Item Condition: Immaculate Reason for selling: Upgrade Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Bank Transfer, Paypal. Shipping Extra Extra Info: Purchased approx. 4 years ago and used as a second system (rarely use and in storage for 1.5 years) The BDP-93 is OPPO's first Blu-ray player to support 3D playback and streaming video-on-demand. Like its predecessor, the BDP-93 is a universal disc player that supports playback of the SACD, DVD-Audio, and HDCD formats, as well as AVCHD, MP4, DivX, MKV, FLAC, and WAV files. This Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player offers BD-Live Web functionality and BonusView/picture-in-picture playback, and it sports dual HDMI outputs, for compatibility with non-3D-capable AV receivers. The BDP-93 offers bitstream output and onboard decoding of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, with 7.1-channel analog audio outputs. OPPO's Web platform includes Netflix and Blockbuster OnDemand, and you can add the player to your network via a wired or wireless connection (a USB WiFi adapter is included). On the audio side, the player has Dolby True-HD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoders, and it can pass these formats in bitstream form over HDMI for your receiver to decode. In my case, my HDMI-equipped receiver died right before this player showed up for review, so those multichannel analog audio outputs came in quite handy. Within the setup menu, I turned off the HDMI audio and set the speaker size, level, and distance for the analog outputs. The menu also allows you to select a crossover point between 40 and 250 Hz and to downmix the analog signal from 7.1 to 5.1, LT/RT, or stereo. I went with 5.1. Other audio setup options include the ability to set an LPCM rate limit for the coaxial/optical outputs (48, 96, or 192), select DSD or PCM output for SACDs, and enable HDCD decoding. The BDP-93 sports a Pure Audio mode that allows you to turn off the video processing and video output to reduce possible interference and improve audio performance. Pictures:

  25. Hi, Acquired new in Feb 2014 and never utilised for its potential having played under 10 Blu-Ray movies in it's life. If interested i'm moving it on for $4.5k. Mint condition and by electronics standards barely run in. I live in Brisbane and happy to help facilitate shipping at buyers expense. It comes with all original accessories and I believe I still have the original boxes in storage. An exhaustive list of 5 star high-end reviews and accolades on the google. But i'm sure you already knew that. Cheers, Bev
