    Yum, I love all things olive!   I make a simple spaghetti dish using only olive oil, anchovies, garlic and parsley the some say is the best food ever put into there mouths.   I'd love to try some

    The only way you will get it will be from the door . That is how the first press comes out. I visited several olive oil pressing plants when I was in Italy and it looked exactly like that coming out o

    Is this where I make the gratuitous comment about my dad owning an olive farm and producing his own olive oil http://www.wirragambaolives.com.au/ Unfortunately he doesn't make a bright green oil, b

There is a Greek supermarket called 'Manny's' on Commercial road, Morwell, Gippsland and they have some green Olive Oil, although not as luminous as the stuff in your photograph.

If you are down that way it would be worth checking out, as their deli is rather good.

They are unlikely to have a website, but will greet you with a Greek smile if you go.

Yammas!

You're just not looking hard enough if you can't find this stuff in Australia. We have some of the best olives and best cold-pressed oils in the world. But often you have to be waiting for it to be picked and pressed (which should be in the next month or so). You simply need to be looking for unfiltered (if you want don't want 'clear' olive oil) and extra virgin (as the world needs more virgins). So, we have (in 5 minutes searching):

Or you could try writing to these guys in Italia:

And then there's the groves and producers who don't need to have a website at all, because they sell out locally in about the first month after harvest. The Rutherglen area is one of my favourites (as you can accidentally drop in at a number of wineries along the way).

Ohhh, I've been looking...  ;)

I agree, we do have some excellent quality olives in Australia.  :)

Just getting cold pressed EVOO, unfiltered, doesn't appear to me to be the simple answer.  The olive used in the first place determines colour right off the bat, no? - if the producers use Kalamata olives in the press are you saying that if it's unfiltered cold pressed EVOO that it will be a bright green oil?  Then there's blends of olives used (which many producers do) which also appears to affect colour.

There seems to be many variables.  I agree that it appears unfiltered cold pressed EVOO is required for bright green olive oil, but I'm not sure that is all you need to look for...

Thanks for taking the time for the links.  This highlights the issues I've found, and the reason for this thread.  Either -

  • Nothing is available;
  • Their product is in containers without any images of the actual oil;
  • They describe their oils by taste and smell, but not colour;
  • You have to travel to the bush to find it (prefer not to, as that's going to become some very, very expensive olive oil);
  • It's overseas.  I'd prefer not to import.

The first link is the best and exactly what I'm after, so thank-you again for that.  If I don't have any luck, then I'll have to wait until the end of next month and hopefully I can score some then.  But, I was hoping I could find a commercially available product that I could source in a supermarket or market like the South Melbourne or Prahran, maybe even Queen Vic if push came to shove (farthest from me).  Would prefer not to travel any more than that...surely it's out there...

Our trees are starting to fruit, but I don't think they're going to be ready for another 5-6 weeks. And we've only got 3 trees - one of which is good for the sort of oil you're talking about.

But there are no really good commercially available oils of the type I think you want. At least, not that is easily available in stores. You could try talking to the guys in a deli in the Prahran Market, but you're more likely to find some in one of the markets on the Mornington Peninsula.

If you tell me your budget and quantity, I can have a look when we're next at one of the markets. I promise not to buy before having a look and taste. I'm pretty sure you're looking for something like this, right?

Yeah, absolutely that's what I'm after.  The reason I'm keen on it is because it was available in a commercial bottle when I was in Athens, and knowing how good our olives are here, I though it would be a simple find.  I'm starting to agree with you that's it's not a commercial product here...who knows, maybe I just hit the timing right in Athens and happened to find some local product soon after harvest...

For the record, I've sent an email to your first link, Kangaroo Olives, I'll await their reply.  Their second oil on their page is due for harvest in about 4 weeks, so hopefully I can get my hands on some.

You're right about the Mornington Peninsula too - I've already got my wife hunting the local stores because she works down that way, I'll have to task her to the markets as well!  ;)

I appreciate the offer of keeping an eye out for me with a view to purchase, but I feel bad about that, so thank-you kindly, but I'll keep searching.  In all honesty, I think the Kangaroo Olives inquiry will come to fruition!  {pun intended}...

we do get some olive oil producers at our local market in the SE, I can ask next time see a vendor there.

Calamarta olives are normally processed for eating at table

Don't forget I have a Greek background and know my oils

And I have an olive tree growing in the back yard but unfortunately the Brisbane humidity causes problems with fruiting

I haven't had olives in 25 years from my tree

We've only just moved in, so we haven't had a crop yet. But the agent that sold us the place has had olives from the property and reckons they're really good. My wife & the agent are Italian descent, so I'm well versed in it now. Except for the actual bit about harvesting - the effing things are about 12 metres tall, and huge. No idea how I'm going to get a decent harvest without killing myself!

Now I buy boxes of giant olives at the fruit markets and make two types of table eating styles

I make the crushed green olives with garlic and coriander and the other style is dried to wrinkle stage

If you ever get up Shepparton way, a huge % of the orchards have been replaced with Olive groves. Or as already been said, try a winery tour around Rutherglen or King Valley, many of them will sell or have tastings of local olive producers as well.

Kudos to you but you would be the only one I know who has an olive tree growing that close to the equater. Singular, apparently , at that.

Thanks for the thought Al, I've briefed my wife on attending some around her work area (Mornington Peninsula), so I'll see how that pans out first!

Yeah, I have a couple of Greek friends, I should ask them too.  Plus she's a chef...  ;)

I do like the look of olive trees, TBO, even without the fruit...
