The church's new layout

Haven't been able to move my arse from the seat since installing them. Only way to describe (in food terms) is there's more connective tissue creating a broader more detailed image of the event. In over 20 years in HiFi I've never heard such a difference between tubes.. Incredible.

After a fair amount of turmoil, frustration and even a tear or two I'm finally beginning to feel like the system is settling down into a place where I'm finding listening sessions enjoyable and reward

What an amazing couple of days. To think this time last week the thought of actually owning a pair of Sovereigns would have just been a daydream to now actually having a pair in situ in the church is

Great news Tubular. I bet that slackie Red still hasn’t bought the big Cary 805 AE’s over. Put a rocket up him for a test drive! I am sure they won’t meet your Nuclear power plant requirements but has to be worth a listen.

Isn't it refreshing to have a 'win' once in a while.  And they are just cheaparse Mullards too Doug.  It doesn't need to cost a zillion $$$ to rock your socks.

And no Hugh, the 805s and still in limbo...  You can't rush these things.  ?

We aren’t getting any younger Red! I figure it must be 4 years Amigo, time to dust off the cobwebs and see if you can melt some Elrog’s!

I had the pleasure of visiting the church yesterday. Was there to partake in some SNA kindness in our shared BBQ'ing hobby but had to take the opportunity to listen to those big JBL's whilst there.

What a joy, pure ease and non fatiguing sound with just the right balance of detail. Unbelievable that such huge speakers can sonically disappear. You should be very proud of your achievements Doug.

Had a quiet day in the office so managed to read the whole thread from start to finish. A great read it was too! :thumb:

It's good to see you have (more or less) settled on a system and been happy with it for quite a while now. Not really a metal fan, as close as I get is a bit of early Sabbath and the occasional Billy Corgan tune (if that counts :) ) I can, however, understand the feeling you get from those massive JBLs where dense and complex passages seem to gel into some kind of beautifully organic wall of sound, Seems they love a bit of grunt to get moving.

Not to mention the Church which looks like my ideal listening room. I would have set it up so I was facing the fireplace from the start and just made everything else work around that :D Thanks for the great thread and hopefully more fun ahead, and few dramas B)

p.s. Wondering how those Ashlys sound on some of your other music fare? Do they do sound staging, detail etc well on a variety of material or would you say they're more for grunt?

Thank you @lemarquis glad you found it somewhat entertaining  and yes its been quite the journey warts and all but to answer your question around the Ashlys yeah I think there a great amp. Not pretty by any stretch remembering that they were designed to be studio workhorses and not something to be admired in some audiophiles hifi rack. Lift the lid and you can see all the fundamentals are right, beefy power supply well laid out circuit boards and 16 high power mosfet output devices  but most importantly  they do sound good, in fact you most likely have an album or two that were mixed/mastered on these as they were very popular in many US recording studios throughout the 80's/90's, No real interest in them these days however as studios have gone classD and audiophiles shun them due to the lack of street cred against all the big names in hifi land.

Not saying there the greatest ever built but damn you get a lot of quality watts and heavy iron for your buck these days on the second hand market.

Thanks @Tubularbells for the insights on the Ashleys. Something for me to keep in mind if I see some pop up.

Seems there is some heavy freight arriving down the driveway so will stay tuned :thumb:

Doug and "Red" made the long journey up to me in East Gippsland to take possession of the Duntechs.  They are 2 of the nicest blokes you will meet!!  Thoughorly enjoyed their short stay.

I am sure Doug will update with some more pics in time but i just thought id post a couple of the "Loading/Packing" of the mightly Soverigns...    All i will say to those kind volinteers who will be helping Doug unload the Soverigns is ........" I hope you have all been muscle building in the last couple of days!!!" :D

Glad i am not in the above pics... :D

I think i have seen those guys try to sell me speakers out of a white van.

This is how they operate!

Those speakers look mint!

Powerful speakers and a equally as powerful beard. Impressed to say the least.

It's because it is a cameo of  "Beauty and the Beast"./ s

The speakers are the beauty.............................?

Speakers? What speakers? All I could see is some hybrid overalls/ hiviz/ half open with a collar. ? ?

SNA  is such a great community with so many good people keen to help. ?

Enjoy mate, would really love to pop in for a listen one day. Will be in town next weekend but won’t have any time, I bet Danzig would sound pretty good on the beasts.

A beautiful sight to behold. Everyone should own a pair of Duntechs at least once in their lives. Very pleased to see these beauties go to a place of appropriate worship. Cheers, M
