@wolster  Thanks Wal for that. At the rate you mention, my new shoes are half way to being knackered :( 200 bucks a pop too.

Just finished 10.6Ks of doing exactly what I bloody said I'd never do! Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh       running round and round and round....and round and round a bloody oval. The handbrake came along and because one of my strides is equal to two of hers I can't take her out with me on the back lanes as she ends up by herself and a lonely country lane and a bird by herself....soooooo Sat arvo and it was off to the lovely Sam Trimble oval(Wal you'd remember Sam Trimble wouldn't you? One of the best batsmen to never play for Australia) and the grass is lush once all this water is gone...floods___sam_trimble_oval_by_snaphappy75

Only pic I could find...

Round and round did I say?

Oh yeah baby...

That's when you know you've been over exercising - wearing out the treadmill!  ;)

My last weekend of freedom as I am back to work on Monday. Went and saw my surgeon on Friday morning. He's happy with the progress so far. He says to come back in three months time and also indicated that he will be seeing me at ever lengthening periods for a few years as he likes to follow the progress of his patients over time. His receptionist told me that from now on they will bulk bill all future visits. Considering the amount of cash splashed already I think that is a good thing. Since things started I have lost just over 30kg in about 6 weeks but he says to now expect a slower reduction.

Also saw my GP on Friday afternoon. BP remains steady on 140/80: he expressed his amazement that even when I was on 4 different tablets a day he wasn't able to get it down to where the weight loss alone has got it. So I am now free from medication apart from the pain relief required due to displaced ankles, which was the result of years of being overweight, though the pharmaceuticals involved here are still pretty heavy duty. I do have some concerns about my ability to cope at work but time will tell. The major problem is that I work a 10 hour day and that apart from my lunch break I am on my feet constantly. Tuesday morning I have an appointment to organise new orthotics and a new pair of shoes to be made. That will set me back around $1.5k apparently.

So, there we are at this point. I will be honest and say that I am dreading Monday morning but there's no way around it. I expect to be knackered by the end of the week. If nothing else it should facilitate further weight loss as my food consumption has not changed from what I detailed in post #446. The sudden onset of a workday's activity should see to that.

Thanks to everyone who has expressed their support over the past weeks, especially to you @@Darren69 for getting this thread off the ground and into the stratosphere from a standing start. Who'd a thunk it would do so well in a forum where the usual mode of enjoyment usually begins when you sit down and relax?

I will post again at the end of the week just to let you know how easy/terrible it has been.

Take care of yourselves out there, won't you?

WD JK good to hear your progressing.

Excellent post Mr Kluk, and what an amazing turn around in your health stats. 30 kg in 6 weeks is an amazing number. As is 140/80 no wonder your doctor is scratching his head.

Work is hard; I don't think any of us enjoy going back to work after a break, but after major surgery and drastic loss of weight it would be very difficult indeed. I couldn't imagine being on my feet for 10 hours a day. Perhaps if you are able, you can start back with 1/2 days? That would make more sense for a couple weeks than subjecting yourself to a full load. In the grand scheme of things none of us I suggest will go to our graves wishing we had spent more time at work.

In any event, I think you should give yourself a great big pat on the back for committing to a course that has probably extended your life span by 20 years. It takes courage to face up to a problem head on. You have done so bravely and with resolve. You certainly have my respect and indeed admiration.

Would love to get back to under 100, haven't been there since waiting at the end of the aisle (coincidence?).

Living in Darwin and have just started riding to/from work so I hope to see results at the end of May.

Going to shift my weigh-in to Monday morning post walk-run-wheeze.

It varies too much on sun nights.

Next goals are set; 95kg and 21ks(half marathon), current pb is 13.4ks and that is up hills and down them again, so I reckon that's worth more, might have a go at a flat course and see how I go. Knees are getting a bit sore and phsyio wants me to have rest days and would prefer I did cycling or swimming but that's out coz of bad shoulder.

Overall she's more than happy with my results considering my age although I didn't really need this: "They will give you a good handicap for the 60+ age group if you do the Brissy or Syd half marathons." But I'm no 60 yet ffs!  "But you will be soon." she says without a hint of irony.

Going to look into a cycle for indoors as I reckon your an accident waiting to happen if your on a bike around these parts which are all narrow pot holed roads(Thanks to successive state govs and their Sydney centric focus). Anyone got any clues on a good bike?

Yeah well done to get under the ton big fella!  :thumb:

Here's a number you'll have trouble reaching!!

(pity I'm not a few inches taller but big boned does this!)  ;)

Fat bastard!

Fat bastard!

I know!   :(

Good work fellas, keep up the good work.

I've got the Joondalup half marathon next weekend, training is going well but I've put on a few kgs. Not quite as fast as I would have liked today but I'm sure I can lift the pace a little next week. Under an 1hr 50min is the goal.post-113906-0-63896500-1430643963_thumb.

Just remember everyone, giving up the drink can be really hard. So to can keeping an eye on the food intake and exercise. Don't beat yourselves up if you slip up or the goals are hard. Keep plugging away and it will become a hell of a lot easier.

Cheers Dave.

Well, that was one hell of a first week back at work, let me tell you. Monday, I really don't know how I got through Monday. At the end of it everyone was telling me that I was a bit pale and that they all thought that I was going to pull the pin and take an early mark. Thank you @@Darren69 for the text based support and the debrief at the end.

After that it was a case of it being easier on each subsequent day, mostly. Anything to do with the surgery is ok. I'm just needing to get my stamina back more than anything.

My major problem is the displaced ankles and the possibility of the return of the ulcers in the  (now flattened) arches of my feet. Still, that is what the painkillers are there to help control until the new shoes/orthotics are ready at the end of the month.

I'm still hoping for the large enough lottery win to whisk me away from the everyday grind, but who isn't? I might try buying a ticket next time as the attempts to win without one have thus far failed dismally.

I'm finding it a bit of a 50/50 thing at the moment, too. Some people notice the weight loss straight away, some look at me funny and say that there is something changed about me but they're not sure what it is.

If there is more to report I will though I do expect that my particular storyline is approaching its natural conclusion. Will definitely report in when I have my first week of solid food and that I have consigned the pureed meals to the dust bin of my history.

Take care out there guys.

@@Pops110 that is a great effort, you must be very fit!!

@@JukKluk2 great to see you have a good attitude towards this time, lotteries-jokes aside, I am sure that your job keeping you active would have to be helping keep to keep the juices flowing etc.

I am slipping still, back up to 96 kg this morning.

My GF is half the cause of it!! She must have a tapeworm or something, she can just eat crap non stop and put on hardly any weight. Of course she asks would I like some cake or chokky, it's lovely after dinner while we watch telly you know, oh don't be silly, you aren't fat etc etc...........

I must resist!!!!!!!! It is my own fault for yielding.

Edited by Darren69

You need to use reverse psychology @@Darren69. Start dropping a few comments like, "Has that blouse shrunk?', or "I love you so much because there is so much to love.", or such like. And make sure that you do it correctly, just one comment a week for the first couple of weeks followed by perhaps three comments in two weeks.........you get the drift? Soon there will be no cake or chocolates.

If you're any good with a sewing machine you could start taking in some of her favourite clothes too. That way she will begin to think that you are right.

OR!!, you could just say "No thanks, I'm not hungry", when offered said cakes and chocolates. It's probably easier to go with the first option.

  • Author

Yes, with my history of interaction with the fairer sex, I view saying certain things to the wimmin in the same light as swimming with great whites whilst dressed like a seal.

As potentially character building that it all might be, the first option it is.

The sewing machine is a fantastic idea!! Not sure how it works on the foodies though.

Hey #Darren69,

Thanks mate. I'm really not that fit, according to the bmi I'm overweight .

I think with distance running it a very mental thing. Being able to push through the pain and exhaustion. I've done a half before so I know that I can do it. It's not easy but reaching challenges and getting over them is really satisfying.

I wish I could do the same with the grog. I got caught drinking by the missus on Friday. Things aren't good, sleeping on the couch, not really talking to each other. Back to where we were months ago. Feeling stressed.

Cheers Dave.

Oh no, hell she doesn't muck around with you! Haha.

When I run, I go for approx. 2-300 meters and have to walk for a while, it feels like my heart is going to burst from my chest, haha. Have never had good cardio fitness. Can get around all day doing stuff like an old bulldozer but if any speed or agility is required, yeah, it's not pretty, haha. Just keep pushing myself I guess. Reading how you guys are going definitely drives me on.

when I did run for kids (the 5.6km distance) while I prepared for it…for months…I never had actually managed to run that distance till the day…amazingly on the day though running with the rest f the herd…you made the distance…at an amazing pace. my fitness dropped off since then though.

not use if done bike riding but for cardio that might be a better thing to initially shift the weight :) or just plain brisk walking. walking and briskly can be just as good as any exercise

I've been a bit on-off on the exercise the last week ! and just as getting over my cold the weather has now gone to cr@p rain…cold etc… might have to renew my gym membership !

Heading out to look for an exercise bike, gotta a feeling I'm damaging my already knackered knees with all this walking/shuffle/jogging.Going to go and do a road run/walk just to see how bad they get if at all, been two days since the last one.(10ks on tready). Now doing pre run exercises to try and build some muscle tone around knee...not easy.

Sit in chair straight back and lift and straighten one leg and rotate toes outward and pointed back towards you...hold for 15 seconds then swap feet, repeat 3 times. Sounds easy doesn't it.  Try it, it aint.thigh-contraction.jpg

Straight leg raises â€“ 3 sets of 10 reps with each leg
straight-leg-raises.jpg

Sit up straight on a chair. Straighten and raise your right leg until straight, with your foot pointing slightly outwards. Keeping your leg raised, move your leg up and down while maintaining the contraction in the teardrop muscle. Repeat with the other leg.

Tip: for more of a challenge, perform with an ankle weight

ITB (iliotibial band) â€“ 3 sets of 15 seconds with each leg
ITB-stretch.jpg

To stretch your right ITB, cross your right leg behind your left leg. Keeping both feet on the ground, lean to your left side and push you right hip outwards. Don’t bend forwards or stick your buttocks out. You should feel the stretch along your outer right thigh and hip.

Tip: lean forwards onto a table to help with balance, or to increase the stretch

and this thing is farking hard...

Buttock stretch â€“ hold for 15 seconds
buttock-stretch.jpg

Lie on your back with your knees bent and both feet flat on the floor. Cross your right leg over your left thigh. Grasp the back of your left thigh with both hands and pull the left leg toward your chest. Repeat with the other leg.
