Affordable quality coffee grinders

Featured Replies

Been using a Delonhgi grinder for ten years over several machines

The Geek is now a barrista in a coffee shop and wants an upgrade at home

We are currently using the sunbeam cafe series coffee machine with the excellent reviews from a decade ago 4810?!?

He's bought a new Cafe series model grinder for me to reimburse him for from the sunbeam shop $80.

Is it better enough

1from the delonghi ?

2 Should I be buying something better?

3 If so what at what price?

Likely to be a step up. Is it a Sunbean EM 480?

I think im sure it's a step up!

Could should it be a bigger step up without adding a fortune?

Next step up would be something like a Rancilio Rocky.

$$$$$ ?

$200 - $350 S/H, depending on condition. $450 - $500 new or thereabouts.

Lol thanks just checked eBay

$450,- lot too much

I might spend that on a cart ;)

Can't afford 2 hobbies at that price point

And I suspect the money would be better spent on a newer second hand coffee machine

I suspect he aspires to a hand pull (manual/lever) machine rare as hens teeth

It depends on how important coffee is to you I guess. You are probably correct about a new machine.

Lever machines are generally quite pricey.

A good grinder is as important as the coffee machine, many argue more so

That said to better your sunbeam its the Rocky or similar and then the next step up from there is $700 to $1000

If your happy with current results stick with what you have

I agree with all of this, particularly the first point. I have a Rancilio Silvia and for 6 months or so I paired it with a cheaper burr grinder. The results were disappointing, until I bought a Rocky. Haven't pulled a bad shot since.

Accept the argument

Just don't have cash for 2 elite hobbies

The delonghi grinder isn't up to it

I think the top sunbeam will be a small step up

The $450 for Rocky better added to a bit then a new Used espresso machine

You could consider a Lelit at $220 from coffeeco. Ours works perfectly well, and gives a decent jolt of een. Seems strongly enough built to do the job for a good many years yet.

I'm sure it's not the last word, but then I'm able to tolerate CDs.

Yes, definitely more so.

Grinder, and therefore grinds more important than the machine. Similar to software cf stereo playing it.

Also consider the Mini Mazzer, another great burr grinder.

Just save your money and go the "hand grinder" route @@djb - something like this heirloom the missus inherited!  ;)

Lol got one of those

Takes you 30 minutes to grind coffeee NOT fine enuf fe espresso

The Sunbeams have an excellent reputation, and you should be able to make a good cup of coffee using their top model.

International Roast in the 4 kilogram tin.

Yes, that one you see at huge Scout meetings or the annual meeting of National Party rank&file where the ladies of the CWA are busily doling the stuff out in white china cups.

You can store stuff in the tin after use @@djb and the packaging(the tin) is living another life and hasn't ended up in landfill.

Win Win!!!!

Save the Planet and the environment !

No more grinding, no more whinging the beans aren't fresh and I have to move the grinder setting.

Just pop the handle of a spoon under the lid and pop it off, grab a sharp knife and run it around the foil sealer and...oh yes, oh yes indeed...the hefty jolt of fresh I.R. assaulting your nostrils while your jugs boiling and the powdered skim milk is being prepared.

Err...magic.

And how good is that?

Hi djb,

I bought a hand grinder recently, an Orphan Espresso Lido 2. Very impressed with the build quality and it doesn't take too long to grind. I am currently using a pretty fine grind in a moka pot until I finish fixing the commercial espresso machine I have been given :-) I had a budget to stick to and would rather spend the money on a good hand grinder than a similarly priced electric, but that's just me.

Cheers!

We recently replaced a tired and worn Krupps grinder with a Breville BCG820BSS, it has been a huge leap forward in our home coffee making. The coffee seems to come out almost twice as strong, proving how important a proper grind is. We are usually fairly cynical types but this machine has impressed us greatly. Picked it up for roughly $230 off Ebay (NSW supplier) during one of those 15% off Ebay weekends.

Came up with this choice after trawling through the reviews on coffeesnobs, as we did with the Espresso machine Sunbeam EM6910 which has also proven great.

+1 I also use the Breville smart grinder pro, as direct replacement for the model your Sunbeam probably superseded. Big jump up in quality for about $100 difference in retail pricing. I also use a Breville Dual Boiler machine so it's all kept in the family now ;)

I also have a hand grinder for camping which is around the same level of grind as the Breville but 2 minutes of an arm workout per shot.
