Security camera advice

Featured Replies

Hi there.

Following some renovations my wife pointed out there is a spot inside where you can see all our entrance doors.

This got me thinking about putting a camera in that spot for security but also to check on our old dog.

Wireless would be preferable and it would need to view around 120 degrees or rotate horizontally.

Would like it to record movement and to be accessible from a remote phone.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your time, fox

Allows unlimited numbers of devices to installed. Cameras have built in mics and speakers to talk to those being viewed. Recorded video can be saved onto any format.

Viewing angles is 130 degrees. Video is 1080p at 30 frames/sec, High Dynamic Range (HDR), H.264 encoding. Outdoor wireless camera needs charging every 7 months.

This one needs a powerpoint close by to power it though.

Just took a snap now with the pan/tilt model. Messy bedroom, sorry.

It was to track the cats as one was misbehaving. :)

My brother is really enjoying his eufy camera setup but not sure you can get any cameras that pan and tilt. No subcriptions needed at all.

I second that....I have had the first generation for years and surprised how well it has survived in all kinds of weather. Can have up to 5 cameras with the one station without any on going fees.Keeps footage for 7 days and you can save footage to a card.I original bought it to alert when a parcel is dropped off. Down the side of the house I was surprised how many cats come in my yard during the night. You could also talk to your dog through the phone app.

Thanks OP for creating this thread. Anyone using UniFi/Ubiquity cameras? Pros/Cons from what has already been suggested above?

Also a eufy camera owner here. 4 cameras in total and I've only charged it twice in a span of 1 year. Software is bug free and easy to use. Cannot complain

Perhaps 10 years ago, I bought a 4 camera security system from Jay Car. It was expensive and complex set up, and all cameras needed to hard wired. I never completely installed it. It also worked only with local hard drive memory.

Fast forward to today, how much easier things are. Free cloud storage of 'events' captured on cameras. Wireless or wired Camera options. Long battery life etc. 3 hours free cloud storage, works out to about 1 month 'event history' storage.

I saw this 2 minute video on YouTube and decided to give Google Nest cam a try. Best purchase ever!

It might be a good starting/stepping point in the way of CCTV for you. :) I take it you added a SD Card for recording?

I have a Complete Dahua camera setup around the house with a BlueIris PC setup to control/capture everything.

The good thing with the TPLink was, that I could also include them in my setup on Blueiris.

Hi rocky500, I'm fairly sure i have some lying around.

Would you normally record when home or just if you go away?

Thanks fox

I have it recording all the time. It will delete the oldest and keeps on recording continuously.

That way, you never forget to turn it on.

Actually I should have said I have it set to only record motion when detected 24/7.

Hikvision & Dahua are the best!!! You get what you pay for.

I bought a couple of the Uniden app cam solo+ cameras when Jaycar had them on special for $149.00 each instead of $249.00 each. Which I think are re-branded Reolink cameras. Being a battery powered camera, they record for a set length of time whenever the PIR sensor detects movement, and store the recordings on a micro SD card. You can download the video, or take a snapshot of the video and download that.

The good: They were easy to install outside with a pivoting screw on mount. They are weather proof to a degree, but mine are installed under cover. They have a pretty decent picture (1080p). They came with a solar panel which was also pretty decent build quality, and easily keeps the battery charged. They support push service (can be annoying on a windy day)

The not so good: The model I got will only connect to 2.4G, not 5G. You do need a good WiFi signal for them to connect, if they are mounted outside (to be expected), and can be a bugger to reconnect if the signal is weak. They don't want to work with my Synology NAS Surveilance software. Wouldn't be hard for a would be thief to steal the camera with the recordings on the micro SD. I'm not sure if you can take the battery pack apart to replace the batteries, once they die.

Here's a pic from a capture (I blurred his face):

But 2 for $300.00, I'm not complaining. I will probably get some more serious cams in the future though.

Sorry, it doesn’t tick the boxes for me,  blurring faces is a no no 🤪

I'm using wyze. They were super cheap, but a little less so now at 29USD.

But some of you guys are paying 4x for a wired camera? Are yours PTZ? Am i missing something? The Google one is $329?

Wires arent ideal, but i run them from inside facing out through windows. Its fairly neat.

What is the ‘use case’ for these cameras (other than tracking pets)? I would have thought that an alarm was the best deterrent.

I have both an home alarm and camera system. The alarm is still the stalwart of home security, however, I find the cameras add another layer of security. Instant real time notification of live video feeds of activities on specific affected cameras, where you could see and speak to and possibly identify the intruder. High definition video recording and assistance with police investigation is another.

Are any of the various offering better when it comes to data privacy and protection?
