Great work, thanks for sharing. Quality shows here.

Yes, installing this room Acoustic Control can be tedious/difficult and take a lot longer than expected, ask me how I know 😅

Very envious Tel! This is marvellous stuff! Heading towards a world class listening environment.

Looking forward to a listening session there mate. Also will be keen to see before and after RT charts in REW. I think it will be well worth the effort.

Well, with my current predicament, I could use a swift 30 mins to help lug the racks, speakers, TV and kit back into position once the work is finished; just saying.... Then we can spin it up and see if it'll go up to eleven.

It's looking fabulous. The sound quality will be well matched by the fine food and wine coming out of the other end of the room.

Well, let's look at what happened after the ceiling diffusion panels (Lagos white) were installed. Here is the tube-fix system going in to support the ceiling absorption panels (Andrea white) and the first of the absorption panels going up:PXL_20230906_034059168.jpgPXL_20230906_045904356.jpg

The absorption panels had a matching white edge piece to run around the perimeter of each row to seal them up properly and increase their efficiency:

And here is the sequence showing the next row, plus absorption panels at either end of each row of diffusion, then more edging work:

And here is the full ceiling completed:

Now the final piece, the mixed absorption array on the right hand side of the space, this time grey fabric Andrea panels (ceiling were Andrea White) and Siena Oak Natura absorption panels to match the Oak Natura finish on the four corner sub traps. The last row of Siena panels about to go in and then we hit the finish-line:

So onto this afternoon, with everything finished and the legendary powerhouse known as @BugPowderDust showed up to lend some muscle and help get the furniture and the system back together (I'm still bloody useless with the leg etc - thanks Craig, very much appreciated and glad we could do a quick listen once Christian left). Then Christian could take his "after" measurements (more to follow on that once I receive files etc). Craig impersonating a busy executive on the left, whilst Christian preps for testing in the corner:

Christian's sweeps resulted in the appearance on his face of something between a wry smile and maybe a touch of Italian smugness or at the very least a little self-satisfaction. On a macro level, everything is tighter, better defined and way less washy on the periphery. Even though we only treated a 6m x 5.5m section of the whole space, we saw RT of 500msec which in an overall 15m x 6m x 2.7m space is nothing short of an absolute win.

Well it sounds like I know where my 30 large went. Bass is amazingly tight. It's clear from looking over Christian's shoulder at REW plots that we have a flatter curve than before. All of the frequencies between 300Hz and 800Hz are more focused with the surfaces no longer able to scatter artefacts all over the place. It's the sum of its parts with the sub traps, absorption and diffusion - difficult to articulate in a succinct way, but it boils down to clarity and tautness coupled with a more distinct and locatable soundstage.

Am I happy? You bet your bollocks to a barn dance I am.

Wow!  Looks amazing... so glad you managed to find another legend to help put everything back together.

Can't wait to have a demo.

Very, very nice Tel. You must need a drink after all of that matey!! 🍷

How does the fan impact? Just kidding 😆

It's come together beautifully. I love how you have combined the science led acoustic design of a dedicated listening room with the inviting amenity of a multi-purpose living space. You must be stoked.

Well done Tel, the timber room acoustics looks superb.

I'm so chuffed that I might almost buy a round of drinks at the show next month.

It's truly transformative. Just sitting in the space, conversation is easier. No need to raise your voice at all, and no danger of being misheard. It's a pleasant place to sit even when not listening to music.

Glad your happy with the results. Looks superb as well. Congrats!

One query: what have you done to address the windows- special fabric/ materials?

Ha ha, I will be there Tel, shall I look for the guy on crutches? 🙏

Hope to see you for a few 🍷😆

Wow looks fantastic. You can see where the money went. Enjoy!

This has been such an interesting journey to follow, thank you very much for documenting it!!

Brilliant outcome and well done @El Tel

👍👍

Now that is a mark of a good room!

The curtains behind the system: were they chosen for their acoustic properties?

Serendipitous situation. Would love to claim it as entirely planned, but... I chose heavy fabric for the Roman blinds I installed years ago for a different reason. They do a great job of damping outside noise which was intended. It transpires they act similarly to the absorption panels. They're not perfect, but a lot better than bare glass though.

Looks awesome, would love to have a listen to that one day, dare say when you get into a more functionable state, you need to have a GTG....🎼

Done some new Dirac measurements yet mate?

Not yet. Mrs Tel is off out soon for an hour or so to get supplies for Sunday roast and I will attempt to do a set of samples then.

OK. Job done.

Samples taken on focused listening position (rather than either of the other "tightly focused" or "wide" options).

I've created 3 filters and pushed them to the Arcam AV41:

1. Harman +6dB under 300Hz

2. Harman +6dB full range

3. Default curve under 300Hz

No prizes for guessing which is my favourite.

I may be absent from the boards for some time. This is just bliss.

If I had to guess I'd pick number 1. but am interested to know what you think of all three in comparison.

Possible for you to share the Dirac before and after, squiggly lines ?

I will get around to it. I intend to run REW up and do some samples with the filters engaged and without so we can see comparisons. I may be slightly over-refreshed now to consider doing it today.
