It's an Eindhoven Holland Philips manufactured PH-280 tube from the very early 1930's with a UX4 tube base. The equivalent in the B4 base is the 1560. https://www.radiomuseum.org/tubes/tube_1560-ux.html Edit: I'd just add that this rectifier for SQ is at the top of the list. I don't think it can be beat on any front. Hey Kirk. It may have been that one lol. Ive been running it in last couple of days. It didnt take long to realise this tube is really special. One thing about this tube when you start it up you get a purple light glow that fades away and is only slightly visible after 30 seconds. It is similar to the glow you get with the telefunken rgn2004 mesh plate tube. Not sure if this is normal or something may be wrong?

That purple colour should lessen and eventually disappear. There is a high chance it hasn't been used for at least 90 years.

Also, one globe type on its last legs and some coke bottles. That are decent but not the same. I am tempted to do the EML just for the glow. Will keep looking

I have had a few of these, new old stock over the years, and they are indeed amazing sounding rectifiers, up there with the brown base U52s, but unfortunately yours looks to be gassy, Considering the money you paid for it, i would send it back or at least get it tested on a good valve tester, but it looks ultimately terminal because even though it works, its life will be severely shortened, also check the getter flash for condition, Sure it may burn off some gas if you are lucky, but it is still leaky and it will fail, and if you wait too long you cannot return it via eBays rules. Also, it will read excessively high on a valve tester because of the gas, that is why the seller may have though it read like new. mwhouston
Anytime you purchase anything old or used there is always the chance of a dud. In all the used tubes I have purchased over many years Ive only had one with open filament, a 71a, and it was replaced. And though recently I bought a couple of NOS NIB 6AS7s Ive also bought a number of new tubes from local suppliers. I guess though if you are chasing something specific you must be prepared for the occasional dud.
Glass_and_Tubes
Other than the audio quality of vintage tubes, I also love the history. In particular I just love the aesthetics of these old boxes. Being a photographer (hence 'glass and tubes) I love combining my passions. Recently I had the chance to admire an amazing collection (not mine) and take some photos of these beautiful boxes. Check this out. In particular, this uber rare DO20 Mullard balloon PIP TOP - NOS in original box nestled in horse hair!!! https://audiomagical.com/product/mullard-do20-balloon-pip-top-very-rare-audio-output-triode-chrome-plate-oxide-filament-tested-100-boxed/ Yes - these are OG (not re-issued) WE300B boxes from around 1965-1988. Have to admire your enthusiasm and collection. I was once there myself now trying to build gear from my stash. I only have three or four boxes full but feel beyond collection I must build gear to hear these tubes. Doing well so far. Keep up the collection and be sure to post any new arrivals.

Thelastjedi
Just an update on the situation with the ph280 tube. I have reached out to the ebay seller and have informed him of the bright blue/purple glow inside the tube, indicating the tube has alot of air leaking inside(Gas) and have ceased immediate use of the tube. The seller has said this to be normal and that this is working properly. I have attached a link showing the tube start up. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AFKK7xJ-9k8t7gQ0d4Dd9WR_6XbHED2w/view?usp=drivesdk

We also are unsure of what the inrush current is on that rectifier on start up. The circuit may need to be modified to limit the inrush current on start up of the heaters. It isn't a stationary ionisation state that disappears after 30 seconds. Also, a big caution to not use that rectifier at all as it has a high likelihood of taking out the other globes and associated circuitry components.

xlr8or
ARC VS55 in da house. I heard this baby some 15 years ago. When the chance to buy one local came up my brother swept in and took it. This one had 1 x 6922 and 2 x 6DJ8's installed. All 3 tubes now replaced with July 1963 production 6N1P's from Novosibirsk. 420v plate voltage and 65mA plate current.
