The D getter type pre-dates the O getter type. Pre-dating the D or square getter type is the solid pan or inverted cup getter type. The earlier the tube revision the better sounding is the general rule of thumb. Why? Hand made, over-engineered and more exotic materials used. That's a snapshot summary.
