Seriously, if you haven't noticed this is the Bravia owners thread so better start your own thread to talk about the JVC with fellow owners or others who may be interested in it.

Bondeyes, someone had a smiliar problem and believe it or not it was just a loose connection at the back of the Bravia. Worth a try?

I wish. I got a funny feeling it's something to do with the monitor set up in vista cos it works so well with a VGA?

Dunno what you are on about. Blu-ray is working fine for me with Blu-ray via HDMI, anything from 480i up to 1080p24 with a Sony 46XBR. Not sure where you are headed with your commentary but perhaps go contribute to the JVC owners thread (I don't remember seeing one but that might just be that I didn't look hard enough)

Can you read? FFS are you using a stand alone blue ray player or a blue ray drive in a laptop? And perhaps you'd like to tell me why after spending 3 grand on a Sony you think I should go chat in a JVC thread? I have my suspicions mental retardation of some sort might be the answer.

Apologies post edited above. But if the screen renders video derived from a Blu-ray disc source then I suspect it is the fault of the laptop not the panel via HDMI. E.g What rev of HDMI is the laptop capable of supporting?

Apoligies accepted> what is the rev of an HDMI cable? Also is the HDMI cable only good for transmitting HD images such as that from the blue ray drive or should it not be also capable of transferring computer data onto the screen as does a standard VGA cable?

Hi folks

I just purchased a 46X from Dick Smith ($3530 including 5yr extended warranty and free delivery). With cashback, it is $3330. Then, I looked at this site and found that I could probably have saved a couple of hundred. but that isnt my main concern.

The picture looked outstanding in the store (much better than the Panasonic PZ700 plasma I was also looking at) which is what sold me on it. However, I feel like most of the posts I have read over the last few hours are negative with regard to this TV - now I am worried about the fan noise, and the clouds/flashlight problem, and I havent even received it yet. Yes, I should have read this first, and purchased later, but got a bit carried away...

Are my worries ill-founded? Should I call them and cancel my order - Dick Smith has a 14 day change your mind for a full refund policy. If I change TV, which would be the best alternative at that size...Samsung F series?. I like the idea of LCD over plasma, mainly because of the lower power usage and the image was just so impressive, but not stuck on LCD.

Target Inputs = Common

Wide Mode = Full

Auto Wide = On

4:3 Default = Off

Display Area = Full Pixel

Sounds like you hadn't done enough homework to convince yourself either way before plonking your money down. The Sony Bravia X is a very good LCD. I use a Bravia W mainly for connecting to a computer, however I would prefer my plasma for more natural skin tones etc.

Unfortunately, retailers are usually not much help when you are trying to judge the picture quality of any flat panel. Either try specialists, or better yet, spend some time with mates who have them where you get a chance to play with different sources (eg HD tuners, DVD, Blu-ray) and settings.

... when in a windowless room with the lights off ... for all other times when you are not living like a mushroom your bravia LCD with non reflective screen is nothing short of an absolute revelation.

A few months of closing light out for a plasma and you would have ended up looking like golum.

I cant even stand to watch my CRTs in most conditions now because of the refelections and glare ... Id top myself if I had to live with plasmas problems with light rooms and reflections.

Although I live in syd in a home with window ... plasma could be the go if you live in tasmania, melboure, or a shipping container.

Of course I can say that with impunity given that this is the Bravia thread haha.

I think they are.

The Bravia X is an outstanding product. There have been fan noise issues but a lot of them were isolated to a certain build time frame. Something like June/July 2007 build. Sure there have been others beyond this date with the buzzing noise but I don't think they were that common. Same thing with the clouding issues. Mine for one is as quiet as a mouse and no clouds.

If you read up on other TVs you'll see they've had their fair share of issues too. There are a lot of posters who post to seek help so you'll hear about their problems. Even the Sammy F's had it's issues but it sounds like the latest firmware's fixed these. If you're wondering which one to go with only you can answer that - compare the two and see which one you prefer personally.

To satisfy yourself spend the next 2 weeks doing more research but most importantly, check the TVs out for yourself personally and see what your eyes tell you.

I honestly don't think the majority of current Bravia X's are afflicted with clouding/buzzing. Sure there will be the odd bad unit but we can't worry about these before the fact can we?

I think he/she means version ie 1.3 supports bit streaming of the latest audio formats ie DTS-HD MA.

I was going to ask about that actually. Are you certain the HDMI cable is OK? Seems strange if it outputs VGA OK but not HDMI.

Also, not quite sure what do you mean by the VGA transferring computer data. Both transfer whatever you're outputting, only the VGA is analog whereas the HDMI digital and it does sound as well.

Now this might sound a bit of a stupid question, but I just have to ask.

Can, or does, the picture deteriorate more so the more an image is scaled up?

I mean, as an example, playback of a DVD on a HD display.

Would more artifacts, or a blurry image, be worse or more prevalent on a full HD 1920*1080, than on a 1366*768 HD display?

I've got both, so I know I'm not talking out of my behind. If you can't tell the difference, then there is no difference. I can, so I'm happy with options. Mind you, not all plasmas are the same, and I have no issue with my Panasonic and we don't have to dim the lights at all or wait till the sun goes down. My Bravia W is certainly bright, but if it's best viewed in a well lit area, isn't rather strange most major retailers seem to put their flat panels in the dimmest section of their stores?

I'm happy with both technologies, but for me, neither is perfect.

Agree neither is perfect, but apart from size and weight, LCD is the only technology that has a tangible benefit over over CRT - ability to view in light rooms.

after seeing the W? i think bravia 40in setup in blockbuster i must buy a sony bravia!.

i was looking at the 46" ones, and was wondering the difference between the X and XBR is it just what they look like or something more?

Also i was looking to interest free it, anyone know a retailer in SA that deals with these and offers interest free that would be a better deal than HN?

The only difference between the X & XBR is just the look.....X = checker plate.......XBR = brushed gun metal.

A subtle correction is that the arrangement of the speakers is different (based on my observation)

The X distributes the small speakers around the bezel whereas the XBR has them left and right. I prefer the latter, and as a piece of furniture I have to say I prefer the XBR. It is after all a matter of taste and preference. But from what I have read the panel and the electronics are the same or similar.

You will be far more likely to get accurate colour if you use component to connect your xbox up with - im using hdmi on my Bravia only because my xbox is the current model, otherwise Id be quite happy with the component PQ (so little PQ difference between them from my testing).

I trust you mean component? VGA will look a little sharper as the Bravia's perform 1:1 pixel mapping or if not being sent the native panel resolution, they scale with 0% overscan on the the PC input.

Component from the xbox360 is 1080i if you tell it you have a HDTV that supports it IIRC - hdmi gives you the option of 1080p and I think VGA does too.

Hello, I was just going back through this thread to find out how to look up the lamp counter in the service menu eg. AndrewW's original post -

0 LMP 427

1 LMPRST 0

2 OPERAT 432

"...means 432 hours of set operation, with 427 hours of the lamp being on"

I looked up mine, and my readings were -

0 LMP 679

1 LMPRST 0

2 OPERAT 1531

So now I'm completely confused... I dont understand what the discrepancy is between the hours of operation and the lamp being on, is hours of operation when the set is on standby? If so I wouldve expected a much higher figure?

I'm sure theres a logical explanation thats completely eluding me!
