Top Gear - interesting, home grown or extreme.

Hi guys

I won’t deny it: I have trouble thinking of Hifi gear that would meet any conventional standard of beauty. Consider the simple spouse test: how many of our spouses would pay even $100 to have any one of our Hifi items added to their showcase living area as a non-working artefact of decorative beauty?

The answer is so close to ‘not one’ that it is simply damning.

Cheers

Grant

I'm having problems equating my spouse to having anything remotely like a "showcase living area". And I'm no better...

That's why I am happily single with a house full of audio equipment. And lovin' it!

Doesn't make your audio gear any better looking tho'. ;)  cheers

I'm rather turned on by my audio components, but possibly that's something best left undiscussed! Now if I was J. G. Ballard I could write a novel about my audio attraction and title it "Crash boom".

Oof. I can hear those designers going: “Sony makes the most frustrating remote controls on the planet.” – “Hold my beer...”

i have the same issue. call your novel, 'audio erotica' and you may be onto something.

i look at certain audio components like i look at architecture and watches.

i have plenty of magazines to fulfil my audio fantasies...

shane - as you know, there are so many gorgeous components out there.

too many to list...

but here are just 5 cd players/transport

and not in any order of course.

cec tl-0

esoteric k-03

tad d-600

metronome kalista dreamplay

dcs vivaldi one

and some turntables;

techdas af-1

technics sl-1000r

kuzma stabi m

walker audio proscenium black diamond

basis aj conti transcendence

vpi 40th anniversary

tw acoustic black knight

sme 30/2

spiral groove 1.2

kronos pro

all sexy components!!!

Glad to hear I am not alone with my audio fetish.

Back in the mid-1970s as a teen I had a stack of well-thumbed audio magazines instead of Playboys. My neighbour's Cerwin Vegas with their red rimmed 12" woofers got me hooked and I would have sold my soul for a pair of Gale 401s or possibly Yamaha NS-1000s (the latter sound better). Forty-five years later, I still get a shiver walking into a hi-fi dealership. I do regret selling my Electrocompaniet ECI-3 which I thought was gorgeous.

Dieter Ram’s designs for Braun were exquisite. I don’t know if they really count as hifi but they are gorgeous

I'm not so sure about the silver. Here's a picture anyway for you to decide.

Some of the Nagra designs are just beautiful.

Hmmm, this thread seems much harder to fill than the fugly thread. There are many TT custom made plinths I have lusted after, but far fewer stock items I like. The Luxman amps with VU meters have already got a mention, I still have remorse over selling mine.

As a piece of fantastic industrial design, and I do have a personal interest, but the Kuzma Stabi S is a triumph of precision, simplicity, and beauty to me.

Quite a few steps up the chain from my ME1s, but these TAD R1s have a huge presence to look at. I know they have been favorites of a number of members, one day I hope to  be in position to listen to them with a view to buying
