Why no Denon?

Recommended Posts

I have a pair of Denon 6600A monoblock power amps driving VAF I-93 (Mk 1) towers with effortless ease since 2009.

Those Denon amps from the late 1980s - early 1990s were quite something.

this is good well made gear...

If only they sounded as good as they look.

Build quality is excellent, looks is great.  Sound quality at the price point can only be described as mediocre.

welcome to your opinion on this, but not something i agree with...i have heard them do very well on both monitor audio platinum and top end dynaudio...so quite good enough to pair up with some tasty speakers :)

of course audio is very much a personal taste thing, so if doesnt float your boat... thats ok ...plenty others in the sea :)

The PMA-1600NE beat some stiff competition to win this recent Hi Fi Choice group test.

Must be doing something right.

Noted, however, that Denon products are marked up by around 40% in Australia, compared to OS. You can thank the local distributor Qualifi for that.? That may go some way to answering the original question: "Why no Denon?" It is just overpriced in Australia. It is a very respected and good value brand in the UK, US, Europe and Asia, but slap a 40% markup on it and suddenly it isn't such a tempting proposition. That's why so may locals acquire their Denons from OS. And local retailers suffer for it.

Sadly that applies across the board in Australia, I remember looking at guitars a few years ago, one particular brand was double the price, but the icing on the cake was they were pulling the guitars out of the case, putting them in a box and selling the case as an accessory. ?

very true... in amps...look at parasound, bryston and like about double price of what in the us.... tends to make some other gear much better value....

however discounting happens and can often snare a good deal...

I was thinking the other day and it occurred to me, that I never really hear about Denon equipment or for that matter see any components come through the classifieds??

I still have my old 3808 doing duties in the kids game room, mainly for xbox duties as I gave up the chase of surround  in favour of 2 channel years ago, I also had a DVD 2930 back then too, which was a great disc spinner, was my first SACD player and provided great upscaling to 1080P.

I can remember looking at the audio gear back in the day thinking how nice it looked, but never really got to listen to the higher end stuff...

Did it fall victim to being out of the same factory as Marantz or was it just not as good as other gear in that price point and was relying on it's name.

I can remember being surprised when the brand showed up in HN with a $1k entry level AVR several years after I paid over $3k for my 3808, maybe that was when they bailed out of the higher end market?

this is worth talking about... I personally think the sharing of platforms each with their own flavour is a smart move actually from sound united and goes way back to D&M... the same thing and even now still is shared with some other brands eg mcintosh.... but at one stage eg when the denon flagship AVP-A1hd was being made... there were literally avp-a1 being dis assembled and re cased in sim audio moon branding...if brands like that were quite happy to have denon innards that says something :D am pretty sure mcintosh still use denon innards as their disc players for instance :) probably goes back to the brand being owned by D&M at one stage...

sound united now owns classe as well.. my bet ... at some stage when good and ready there will be  classe av processor that will come out that will keep the classe identity and sound but use the solid denon/marantz basis for rock solid user experience :)

I remember this when happened .. as my dad does have a 3808 that is still working perfectly well all these later... what actually happened is for the 2010-11 they moved the range up a notch in name... so your 3808 for instance when released was badged a 4311 and cost $3k :) the new 3311 was more in line with the previous 2808.... which were still decent enough units... but it allowed for a 1 series to be inserted at the bottom of the line up..... while some might see this as a negative with 1 series sold in HN chain stores and such... its actually some smart segmentation i would suggest... it keeps the specialist stores happy selling their upper models... and creates a chain store affordable range... very important as many folk just walk into your harvey norman and buy a system with no idea even of the specialist stores... of course once buying into the denon brand... when comes time to upgrade or if looking for better... if they google denon... guess what comes up... all the specialist stores selling the upper models

of course you get those who turn their nose up then... thinking oh its a brand that makes quite budget gear... forgetting about the multi thousand dollar upper end gear they also do make...and some folks are going to turn their noses up to some brands in any case ... so no loss i say :D

I am willing to bet that if that ever happened people would be bringing them back because, "My Aldi soundbar sounds better than these do."

I see it going the other way - we are going to see brand stores turning up for home audio in the next five years or so. We already have specialist B&O and Sennheiser stores in the Sydney CBD - there are effectively no independent dealers surviving in city centres for more than a subset of their product ranges - I saw Devialet stores in Europe a few years ago in railway stations. This echoes what has happened with a lot of other electronics brands. I can see Marantz specialist stores (with B&W speakers in tow) appearing in major cities in the next few years, though maybe not in Australia unless they prove successful elsewhere. The brand has the name and the range, though until now not the speakers, to do something like that. I'm not sure what other specialist audio brand could move in that direction.

In such a scenario, Denon would be come their brand aimed at specialist and independent dealers, more customisable, etc. I could even see Denon high end products appearing outside Japan in such a scenario, especially if the A110 as a "halfway house" set of products is successful.

If you want real success, you don't sell better products - you sell aspiration. Look at the floor space in higher class areas dedicated to the mechanical watch!
