One of my favourite bands is Audioslave. Their first album released about 3 yrs ago was excellent, their second apart from a couple of songs struggled, but their third album is bloody brilliant, every song is powerful and well produced. Morellos guitar playing is inspirational, the bass player is also excellent. l recommend it highly. Cant wait to see them in concert when they next make it down here.

Ahh yes! Chris Cornell , one of the great voices of Modern Rock.

Audioslave don't do it for me, but man what a vioce. He's up there with Paul Rodgers of 'Free' and 'Bad Company'

I have just chucked it on now, after putting it in the , not good enough pile ;)

a few drinks may have made it better.. hehe

Yes Drizt l was very close minded about it which was stupid of me, l hated the single Original Fire but now think its pretty good but the rest of the album is much better.

Dont forget the drummer Mondi, Brad Wilk, great drum sound on that album that really cuts through. It was the first thing I noticed. But then I am a spastic drummer!

Just put on a new Cd for a spin,I've got it as a loaner. The vocalist, her name is Anjani the album is Blue Alert. The disc is still playing as I write this, but because i think thats its a find here it is..............Anjani

Her very smooth breathy style is immediately an easy and relaxing listen. So if you like Norah Jones or Dianna Krall this is a must.

So as the man in the hat said,Do yourselves a favour. This is a must.

Thanks for the recommendation Joz. After a brief listen to this disc at a recent Field trip, I now have a copy.

Sounds good in the car. Looking forward to a proper listen at home tonight.

I have been listening non stop to Jeff Buckley - Grace over the last week or so...

Gotta love that guys voice, pity he died at such a young age.

Was he the guy that went for a Midnight dip?

Both Anjani and Jeff Buckly did Leonard Cohens songs!

G'day,

What have I been listening to lately?

  • Porcupine Tree - "Voyage 34 (The Complete Trip)" -- think of this as Pink Floyd crossed with The Orb. Four extended instrumental pieces documenting an LSD experience. Reverbed guitar lines from "The Wall" + synth washes + occasional voice samples. Other Porcupine Tree releases are more heavy rock sounding, but this early release is basically an acid trip.
  • Paul Kelly - "Lantana" -- soundtrack to the film of the same name. Seems to be heavily influenced by The Necks.
  • The Beatles - "Love" -- in which George Martin tries to pull a "2 Many DJs" on the Fab Four's back catalogue. There's some nifty mash-ups going on in places, but mostly it's a kind of extended "Stars On 45". The sound is beaut, but I kind of expected a bit more of a mash-up here. Overall it is still a bit too respectful of the originals, and could have been a bit more adventurous.
  • Max Richter - "Songs From Before" -- "post-classical" attempting to be terribly, terribly meloncholy. Snatches of piano, strings, effects, voice samples, etc. Some lovely stuff here, but I fear that it will soon be de rigueur to use many tracks as backing music for sombre documentaries on Tragic Events, and may get over-exposed.

Lately I've been spinning a lot of pearl jam and U2 in preparation for their concerts. Now that they're done, I'm listening to a bit of Audioslave, Jeff Buckley, and revisiting some smashing pumpkins ~ awesome song writing even if billy corgens voice sometimes takes a few tracks to get used to.

Radiohead is never too far from the cd player either.

My fiance has been getting into John Mayers new album a bit lately ~ I still think my mate Ben Smith sounds better. If your in Melbourne you should check him out.

This is a good thread - you can sort of pick people who like similar stuff as you and usually pretty safely try something you haven't heard before based on their recommendation.

I wonder if people with similar tastes in music like similar speakers/gear? This may have been covered in the thread already or in a diff topic ~ if so my apologies for going over old ground.

Well I saw U2 a couple of weeks ago so lot's of U2. I have a bootleg of their Saturday concert in Melbourne which is very good so that's been in big circulation for me. I bought the deluxe version of U218 singles but I must admit the sound is disappointing me a bit - it seems a bit too forward, treble is a bit much and I find it fatiguing. I bought the deluxe CD mainly so I got the live concert footage on the DVD which is included but at this rate I might end up getting the vinyl as well if I can find it. Looks like I'll get the DVD version of U218 singles for christmas but I would have liked to see some old clips I don't have such as I Will Follow and Gloria on that, unfortunately they still seem to be unavailable on DVD. I found their latest album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, to be lacking in volume range on the CD (it's all loud) so I'm also thinking of getting that on vinyl even though I already have the standard and deluxe CD versions. It all seems a bit wasteful after a while. Anyway, I like my U2 so the compilation is good.

I've never been a fan of Bono's but I do have U2's POP Cd.

It's very atmospheric and quite haunting on some tracks.

I love the production qualities of tracks like

'If you wear that Velvet dress' and 'If god will send his angels'.

I usually play this CD along with Radioheads 'The Bends' and 'OK Computer' In fact I think I'll play them this afternoon. Cheers.

Can't go wrong with 'The Bends' mate - one of the best albums of all time. My personal favourite!

Diana Krall - Christmas songs

Once again she is superb and well its seasonally relevant i believe...

G'day,

Latest yuletide listenings:

  • Vince Gauraldi - "A Charlie Brown Christmas" - bit of a nostalgia trip, from the ubiqitous Peanuts special played on Xmas days of my youth. "Linus & Lucy" is still a fave of mine.
  • The Last Town Chorus - "Wire Waltz" - heard a slow-burn cover of Bowie's "Modern Love", replete with piano and lap steel and a lass warbling over the top. Rest of the CD is in the same vein. Kinda reminds me of countrified Mazzy Star.
  • Sonic Youth - "The Diamond Sea" - an old single I pulled out of the pile. Starts out as a very pretty tune, though with the usual SY atonal guitar flourishes, before devolving into a 19min guitar freakout.
  • Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglo - "The Swell Season" - in which singer from Irish group The Frames churns out some luverly piano & violin based odes, based around the novel of the same name. Kinda like compatriot Damien Rice, though a bit more fragile and meloncholy.

Has any body listened to British soul singer AMY WINEHOUSE .Frank[2003] ,Back to Black[2006] had a little listen on Amazom music .

Santa must have had a busy time since checking the post today yielded a delivery of four CD’s, still another eight in transit…I was hoping this lot turned up prior to Christmas, but never mind they are here now.

Currently listening to JJ Cale & Eric Clapton, must say it is different to what I thought it was going to be. More kinda laid back and easy listening, as opposed to dynamic excellent disc IMO one that will get some air time on my system.

G'day,

Gavin Bryars - "The Sinking Of The Titanic" - this is more of a headphone trip I suppose, since it can be ghostly quiet in sections. Basically the hour-long piece endlessly loops a melody that was (apparently) played by a string section as the Titanic was sinking, and adds variations and sound effects. I guess it is better explained here, which has probably the best explanation of the work: "In interviews, Bryars has stated that he wanted the piece to be sort of a sonic representation of what it would sound like if the melody that the musicians were playing simply kept on going even after they had been swallowed by the sea.".

If you've got the patience, this is a rewarding work.

Thanks HG

Never been in to "Ambient" music, but this could be the one for me.

I've always been a fan of the great ocean liners, especially in the Art Deco period. Fabulous doco on channel 2 last night about the Normandie and Queen mary competing for the Blue Riband just before WW2. I think that was the era for me :), provided I wasn't sick or broke.

Must admit, I lost my previous interest in the Titanic when it got hyped off my radar a few years ago, just before the (more recent) Hollywood movie was lanched....funny about that  .

However, the image of that dance-band playing that mournful hymn as the ship sank still affects me....regardless of whether or not that's the way it really happened.

So, I'll be sure to chase this one up and see if he's captured the mood as well as that review suggests.

Anyway, I think everyone should have at least one example of every music genre (except maybe rap  ) in their collection. This can be my token ambient disc.

Cheers

Tony

At the end of the Ed Harris film Pollock (about the "Blue Poles" painter), the music over the titles is Tom Waits' "The World Keeps Turning". Had to get a copy as soon as I could so I downloaded an MP3 from the internet and I love it. Bought a couple of Tom Waits CD's but haven't taken the time to get into them yet....didn't find this track on any in stock locally.

Usual reaction to "TWKT" from other people is along the lines of "Tony, that's awful!!" Mrs M admits it's grown on her.

Definitely one of my favourite tracks.

I'm currently listening to:

Tom Waits - Mule Variations

Pink Floyd - Echoes (Best of: Remastered 2 CD)

Gnarls Barkley - St Elsewhere

I'm really enjoying the Tom Waits cd. I first heard it at the Osborn GTG and it is great. Tom Waits isn't for everyone though.

Haven't had a chance to listen to the others in any detail yet (that's why they are 'currently spinning')
