mondie Posted June 29, 2006 Author Posted June 29, 2006 "The best rock indie record of the 19th Century" is the quote on the cover sticker of Beiruts album Gulag Orkestar. BS l thought, but as it turns out its an apt way of describing this album which after just one listen is addictive and very original. The guy is only 19 and just oozes talent, his a haunting voice draws you into the songs. l love it
Aslan Posted June 29, 2006 Posted June 29, 2006 Must check it out Mondie.....is it available locally, or a grey import?
mondie Posted June 29, 2006 Author Posted June 29, 2006 Andrew, l had to get my local CD pimp to import it for me. He couldnt find any reference to it locally so l assume it just hasnt been released yet. Cheers

joz Posted August 4, 2006 Posted August 4, 2006 Orlando Lopez Cachaito,....The disc is a few years old now but I just keep coming back to it . Cachaito is the bassist for the Buona Vista Social club. It's a bunch a Cuban jazz grooves.Mainly centered around the guys double bass and his music style. No vocals just the the ol boy doin his thing.BTW he is probably the youngest in the BVSC. 1

Guest alebonau Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 at the get together last night Andrew played somethign from 'Harry Manx' that http://www.northernblues.com/bio_manx.html which I found pretty interesting. Was a live recordign from one of his concerts and then some studio stuff. Very intereting stuff indeed, will need to try and track somethign down on that. Been listening to one of my favs, Moon safari from the french band air. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000003S5...ance&n=5174 some very nice music, with nice instrumentations and vocals. track 8 'Ce Matin La' on it is a cracker. it starts of with this whistle that reverberates back from the speakers, caught me by suprise. Have a kitchen and dining area behind me and the whistle goes all the way back into the dining area. left me astounded. was listenign late in quiet surrounds, perhaps that helped but heard nothign like it and really astounded me. Anyway some really nice tunes on this CD. ps drizt last night while we were playing that track from meshell negecello you mentioned her music was very much like some other artist?. name's completely gone over my head ? can you recall ?

Drizt Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 meshell's albums are in the "Urban Groove" section at JB. I picked up "peace beyond passion" at lunch time. Joss Stones two albums are in the popular section. I spoke to a jb guy an he agreed that if joss stone wasnt white she would be in the same section as meshell. Both of joss stones album are great, ive only listened to them once through in their entirety so i won't recommend one of the other... I think shes only 19 or something.

[/b] I liked The Soul Sessions -- lots of soul and funk. Although the follow-up CD (can't remember its name) was a bit too generic for my tastes. --Geoff 1
