There was also (I say was because at least one of them is no longer available, new): Duc's wonderful-sounding tube phono stage. and JLTI's ss phono stage. And there is also my ss 'Muse'. Plus Mark Houston makes a couple. Andy 4
Guest Balangerer Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 I had a Black Art tube phono stage. The workmanship is outstanding. Then I went to the dark side with Naim.

mwhouston Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 The ones I love to build (but haven’t for a while) are the battery powered “Mimics” design by Bruce of American oddwatt fame. But I have built quite a number of tube based stages too. The latest is the Esoteric 843p. https://retro-thermionic.blogspot.com/2018/03/mimic-carbon-ii.html https://retro-thermionic.blogspot.com/2018/06/retro-tubephono-mm-tube-phono-preamp.html https://retro-thermionic.blogspot.com/2015_07_07_archive.html https://retro-thermionic.blogspot.com/2019/03/ 4

VanArn Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 Cawsey Audio custom builds phono pre-amps as well as class A solid state amplifiers. the pre-amp can be assembled with a very low noise head amp for MC cartridges. 2

Hi @naggots how did you find the sound of the lehmann vs the iphono 2? IFi have just released the IPhono 3 but has a serious $ tag attached to it, not sure if i want to take a punt.

In the end the Lehmann is plug and play and the adjustability of the ifi was not needed. I only use MM so maybe that would be a whole new ball game. The Ifi was definitely quieter tho. 1

I'm now using a Schiit Mani (interim) although its Ok, the noisefloor is to be desired. The gain pass 42db is not usable imho. I might wait on another iphono2 to pop up on the classifieds and give that a go.
