I am unlikely to go down the turntable rabbit hole;  cannot say "never" especially since this radical change

If only it was just a single Rabbit Hole, try Rabbit Warren.

While this comment I’m about to make won’t be popular, personally I would not suggest to anyone new to HiFi to go in the vinyl direction if they do not already have a real interest and or a large stock of records sitting in a cupboard somewhere. The amount of money required to get a good analogue system and then to buy decent records in any numbers is eye watering.

Having said that I have no intention of walking away from analogue as it is my preferred source of music and will be buying records for many years to come.

cheers Terry

A bass test is not enough reason to ever play Beyoncé. Ever.

  • More importantly where do you plug in the turntable?

same here.  Being time poor these days, i look forward to my week listening sessions with on vinyl.  It forces me to sit, relax and appreciate the medium and sound.  Collecting records, yes, not cheap but makes you appreciate the quality that if offers.  I have rolled alot of digital equipment, but my vinyl rig stayed the same over the years.

I heard high resolution vinyl is coming to market soon. It might be another revolution (wallet killer).

Nicely played.

Maybe you started this thread too soon. I was eyeing your speakers for sale, ...but now I need to look for the stormtrooper helmets....?

And you don’t have to wear them on your head....:D

enjoy @Snoopy8

Actually,

i heard a set of 5 of these in 5.1 surround sound.  ?   Awesome stuff!

Congrats on your new system Snoopy8! It looks great and no doubt sounds great...and less psu’s to be constantly turning on and off!

A while back I made a similar change - from DIY active speakers plus subs to a well put together commercial speaker with inbuilt active subs. It was a step forward in sound quality and a leap in terms of WAF plus simplicity. There is something calming about removing all the components so one has no diversion s to tweaks and/ or upgrades. Enjoy.

It is actually 5.0 but equivalent to 5.5 because each helmet was like a sub itself.  It is a custom solution.  Cannot justify 5 helmets, spend maybe 20% of time on HT

Using a Thoroughbred Sequencer and power boards, I manage to get everything on and off with a push of a button.  Mind you, the nest of cables was horrible.

You have summarised it well. I am still in the process of removing old cables and setting up my HT.

I was able to hear these and concur with what Snoopy says. I like the style and they look nice and modern on their stands. Certainly a talking point for guests, of the Hifi variety or otherwise!

The bass from these things is amazing. They also look cool when they shake. They fill a giant space.

For anyone interested in his old speakers, I thought the old system is slightly better. Maybe the SGRs are more clean and accurate to my ears.

Mike was the only person who did a A/B comparison between the old and new system.  Mike did not mention he loves bass and my highly optimised bass in old setup was definitely to his liking.  Also,  Mike and I have different preferences and taste, so thank you for feedback.

I heard a single phantom in a members house and did not like it at all. Overly boated bass and not much in midrange. Went loud and deep though.

Glad the stereo pair and up spec version are working for you. Are they a bit top heavy on the stands? I may be wrong but they look that way.

Love simple systems and have gone in a similar way around 18 months ago, streaming integrated, TT, 2 speakers and a sub in the corner.

Do you remember what colour the sides were?  You may have heard the silver which over emphasised the bass?

It is night and day between a single one and a stereo pair on good stands and positioned properly in the room

They were 13 kg each,  heavier than most book shelf speakers.  If they are in the open, best not to have them near kids and dogs playing chassie..  I did not buy their stands, ended up with Triangle stands that could be filled with some sand.

Probably. It was when they first came out.

Unfortunately YouTube has really tarnished this speakers reputation as almost everyone reviews as only 1 speaker and by calling it a "$3000 bluetooth" speaker but this turkey really takes the cake.

Obviously, those people have far too much money and all they know is that it is a really expensive bluetooth boom box!

There is blame elsewhere as well.  Devialet have to share some of the blame because it is marketed as a single wireless box!     Retailers have usually one, my demo of a single was tucked into the corner of the shop. When I asked why didn't they set up a stereo pair, the guy said that they did at one stage but there was no interest, plus of course the retailer had to carry the cost of 2.  Most of the reviews are for one as well, although there are a few stereo reviews with luke warm responses, with expensive as a common theme.

Maybe I can kickoff something here!  ?

p/s no association with Devialet nor any retailers...

It just proves how difficult is to bring out something different but maybe be better to what we all have been used to you for many years. Audio Junction had a stereo pair in their demo room but it didn't last long for probably the reason that you have stated.

Otherwise known as Devialet Phantom Gold, they provided superb audio quality expected of a high end hifi system in a pair of components, each slightly larger than a soccer ball !

Very nice.

Did you get the official Devialet stands?

Also... pics.... or it didn't happen! ?

Welcome to the club Snoopy. I have had the Silvers then the Golds for a few years now and did the same minimalisation trick as you......less is best....less boxes, cables and cords.

Recently I added a dual core DSP unit and it has really tamed the bass humps and made the system sound much better.  My room isn’t overly difficult but the before and after measurements are amazing.

No raat as you mention but many use Roon through a RPi or Mac mini. The Devialet user forum has more.

i run a mac mini using spark (not great) and a Project digital phono for the TT.

I loved the Golds before the DSP addition, now I am completely besotted.

I was going to ask a question about the bass. Would it be fair to say that they are designed for an open type room? How would they go in a treated enclosed room? i would suspect the bass might be a bit over powering.

I'm still getting over how he used a socket wrench..?

Interesting to see inside though.

Sometimes it’s better not to look inside. I remember looking at pics of my Meitner MA1 after I bought it - So much empty space.

At the end of the day it is about the sound not how it looks inside.

My room isn’t treated, ie  hard floor and one side and back wall of mostly glass, 6m x 10m.

Any active (or non active) speaker system will be hit or miss depending on its enviroment , hence room treatment is key. If we cant treat the room then digital room correction is a great option.

As you mention, a treated and enclosed room could work if it flattens the right things, or an open room equally works too. These speakers are very non fuss regarding placement ie back and side wall, and still throw a wide sound stage and are quite onmi directional. However, tweaking brings out their best ie stands, correct height and some toe in.

Without the dspeaker correction I was content (yes naively) until experiencing the difference. I have had many different set ups, perhaps my stacked quad 57s with subs and valve amps were my benchmark, without being $ ridiculous. Stacked quads create an immense radiated sound that your whole body absorbs, and their midrange is totally intoxicating.

Back to your question, my thoughts are these speakers aren’t overly bass sounding it’s full spectrum,  they have that ability to sound awesome at low listening volumes which most people do, but when played loud they can alter your heart rhythm in a nice way ?
