John Woodhead at Aranmar Acoustics.  63 Southern Road, Mentone.  He makes  excellent    cabinets and has  a   wealth of speaker  knowledge. He had some serious health problems that set him back last year and fortunately  he has recovered.  Anyone wanting him to build custom enclosure should remember to supply detailed  drawings   and  not rough plans.

I sent him plans about 3 years ago, then followed up multiple times, and nothing happened. I don't question his skills, but at the time only his bigger customers got any priority. Things may have changed since then, but I can't say I had any luck trying to work with him then. Also he works with timber, and I need to move beyond that now.

Then they are NOT the right people for this job, so no point recommending them for one-off constructions like mine.

Con, it looks like you'll just have to bite the bullet and purchase a CNC station 🤣🤣 🤣

They're under those acoustic panels for now. It turns out I need 10m cables to put them where I want even further out.

That looks freakin brilliant, Con. Can’t wait to have a glass or two to celebrate.

That's a nice looking and good sized room Con.

Will your system have the oomph you want to fill that space now? Or do I see another bespoke project on the horizon?

:waiting for developments....

Looks amazing. Having heard your previous iteration I reckon you’ll be getting so much more from that room. 👍👍

The system was already designed with this size room in mind, but when has that stopped us from upgrading? :)

Con,

That room looks amazing, and I'm sure the equipment will sound better than ever.  Congrats!!!

Chris

Fantastic room.

Wow Con, great set up. I want ob's. I gotta kick myself in the b___t, and start my build. Is inviting one's self over inappropriate? lol.

Well the first day has been amazing. I did a round of DSP room correction initially in mono and it was already fabulous. There are only subtle differences from left and right this time. You can't see from that picture, but the back half of the room is a little narrower on the left side, and the front wall is a bit closer on the right, otherwise they should be identical. Nonetheless I did notice subtle moments where the sound would be "in" the left speaker at certain frequencies so I moved to differential left right DSP and that's fixed that issue. I then played with the room sim on REW and found that I had coincidentally put the main speakers close to their flattest position, but the subs could be fine tunes for a flatter response actually alongside the main speakers. However I was a bit wary of this as small movements in either direction and it would create either a drastic peak or a drastic null, and the room wasn't perfectly modelled. I gave it a go anyway and of course the measurements were significantly worse. It was actually quite a smooth roll off where I had them and I put them in a similar location, but even closer to the middle of the walls and redid the DSP all over again.

It's interesting doing a direct back and forth with my old room and the exact same system to see what effect the room had. The tonality is very similar which shouldn't be surprising since the character is defined primarily by the speakers, provided the DSP ends up giving a similar curve to what I had in the past. This room is still very lively, but fortunately that's easy to fix. There are almost no furnishings to speak of and no room treatment at all.  It's funny how the brain just tunes out the extra echoes so it's not a problem in the short term. The main thing improvement is without a doubt the stage - they're throwing an absolutely enormous stage now and I'm very pleased with what my speakers are capable of. They are amply endowed to fill this room and beyond. Instruments hold an enormous depth and are surrounded by bootloads of air connecting them with the other instruments rather than having the pinpoint focus and void between them. Close mic'ed recordings tend to make instruments huge and that's probably the only relative disadvantage, but larger works are godly. Being OB and a wide dispersion design by me, the sweet spot is fat, super fat. In fact I can walk around the room and enjoy it from just about anywhere and still experience the stage and similar tonal balance. The bass does tend to "focus" in a ~2m radius around the central sweet spot which is plenty good for entertaining. Being OB I love being able to walk up to virtually between the speakers, and still hear a stage thrown behind and between the speakers. There's also this extra "breathing" the music does when I turn it up, as though the old room would compress it as it got louder. This room being 2/3 underground also means it's extremely quiet, and it's 2 floors below the bedrooms so I was listening to music till pretty late in the evening last night. Quiet listening in the dead of real quiet night here is still amazingly rewarding. The only distraction is the sound of the wine fridge next door which is very quiet but when it's 30dB ambient here that's the only noise, plus it's doing an important job for when I next have a get together. By the way, the gas fireplace directly behind the components casts no heat directly onto the electronics as it all blows upwards. Its only detriment is it's noisy when running, but my amps generate enough heat most of the time. It was suffocating in my old little room.

I've already booked my electrician to come and put a 32A line in for the system to be able to run off the TSI in addition to the P20. It's currently only running of the P20. The reported power waveform here seems more respectable here - my old place was not too far from an industrial zone and I suspect that was creating power issues for me. Still left to do is to furnish the room (already ordered a couch), and get some room treatment. I'm not sure just how to best go about the room treatment. I don't want anything garage quality here so I may contract someone to just come in and do it for me. I've ordered a couple of NBspeaker cable 10m RCA leads for the subwoofers, and will probably have to get suitable power cables to stretch that distance as well, and not need extension leads as I'm using at the moment. Finally there are get togethers to be had, but since we just moved in that could be a while away since there's an awful lot to resolve here first.

Mood lighting night mode shot.

Fantastic!. Congratulations.

Reading this article has made me add something to my bucket list.  Listen to some OB speakers singing away.

The notion of having any form of sound stage no matter where you are in the room is a concept so remote to the that it blows my mind thinking that it's even possible.....

Time to do some research!

Con, a good first step might be to engage Artnovion for a design session.

Speaking from personal experience, their products are very visually appealing and not at all like a lot of the other options on the market. Their design service is very thorough and impressive too.

see this thread for example:

while you could get a local acoustics specialist in, personal experience is most aren’t interested in a small job (just chasing commercial gigs) or they don’t deploy as much “science” in your design and often just suggest you put panels on every surface so your room looks like a looney bin.

im very happy with the art iBook stuff I have. Looks great, performs well. Even the chippy who helped me put it up could hear the difference it made to the room as he was putting it up panel by panel.

Thanks a lot. They don't seem to have a local distributor in Melbourne, but I suppose they could do a consulting service remotely. I really need someone to design, source, and install them.

Well, the sourcing bit is easy (just ring the local reseller) and I just had a local chippy put mine up.

Get them to design it remotely in Portugal and I can send you my chippy’s number. He’s familiar with the attachment system and knocked mine all up in about 3 hours.

Tried contacting them multiple times through the local distributor and their "service" but have had radio silence in response.

Meanwhile I got the sparky to come around and investigate putting in a dedicated 32A line for me. I had to make up some crap to convince him I needed 32A but he said he can do it; now waiting for the quote and time.

I would suggest multiple 20a lines are better than 1x 32a line, Con.

I did that last time. Ground loops, and my power conditioner is one big mofo rather than multiple smaller.
