Full disclosure here.

 

I'm a big Star Wars fan, well, of the movies at least. I even enjoy Episode I. There, I've said it. There is little chance I will not like a Star Wars movie with the proper characters and the usual Star Wars humour. From that perspective, you can all guess already that I was blown away yesterday by a long and very enjoyable film! Worth my money I say.

 

I was in Port Hedland until late in the arvo yesterday, came back and found out I had still 30 minutes to reach the local cinema for a screening. All the excitement pumped back in (it would have been sensible to go to bed, but hey) and off I went.

 

Warning! Spoilers ahead!

 

It picks up right at the beginning from where we left Ep. VII. And what does Luke do? Grab his lightsaber and chuck it... And then there's the battle at the beginning. I found it great scenery. Apart from that, I thought it was daring for the director to continue the movie with the tone of "the rebels are screwed big time, and they are losing and there's nothing they can do about it". They just die and die, one after the other. That's never happened before.

 

Mark Hamill as Luke was great as grumpy old Jedi, disbelieving in the Force and wanting to get rid of it all. And Yoda, what a character! Very much the Yoda from Empire (although a bit CGI'd for my taste).

 

I found the chemistry between Rey and Kylo Ren very convincing also. The whole bit when he kills Stoke (The Emperor? "It was I who...") and battle the bodyguards, and then he's wanting to rule the Galaxy but she says "Don't do this Ben..." was great. Kylo Ren is a mean bastard, trying to kill Leia and anyone who goes on his way. At the end he was not the hesitating dark side pupil from the beginning.

 

And Rey's parents being drunk scavengers who sold her for money? I'm so glad she's just someone, and not a close relative of the Skywalker clan (we've had that too much). I think she does a good job overall.

 

But the end scene is the real cracker. The battle on the salt planet was great. The scenery incredible, with the white sand over the red bottom, and Luke appearing out of the blue to battle Kylo Ren. The trick he pulls out of the hat there left me open jawed. Not saying any more though... you would know.

 

Finally, the whole Finn - Rose thing was also pretty entertaining. Was it necessary? After all, they did decimate the rebellion anyway. But it was fun to watch.

 

Loved it. Love the fact that even though the end is not happy, it's not necessarily as open ended as Empire. But satisfying. I find all (or most) of the knots are tied, and if for whatever reason Episode IX never gets made, this would even make for a good ending. And a nice farewell to Princess Leia.

 

Make of this what you want. It's only Star Wars... but I like it.

Totally agree with everything you said!  (Although I through Yoda was fine!) Utterly brilliant. I was crying when Finn was flying towards the cannon - thought we were going to lose him! Really hope the code cracker turns up again - a great character! So much action, battles, brilliant scenery, excitement, suspense plus real characters who develop and have real relationships. This movie has everything! I was happy that Kylo Ren didn't end up killing Leia. Maybe there is still hope for him

Watched it last night.  Loved it! They could have done without those alien seagull like creatures or those crystal foxes but i supposed Disney had to put in something cute for the kids for merchandising off toys from the movie.

I absolutely loved this one and there isn't a thing I would change in the whole movie.

 

I don't know what that freaking big tail was off the island there for a split second!!

 

My fave scenes were Luke staring back at the massive row of AT AT's on the salt planet and the still where the incredibly gorgeous Laura Dern hits hyper drive. Benito Del Torres part was also excellent.

 

I didn't know there were different sizes of AT AT's and it was interesting to see all sorts of such equipment hanging up and stored in the flight deck of the massive Stoke ship.

 

2 and a half hours went like 10 minutes for me so that's recommendation enough.

 

Absolutely fantastic.

The plot - since when has space fuel ever been an issue in ANY Star Wars movie before?

Instead of Luke being the most powerful badass Jedi we got Luke the loser

Casino scene

Horse racing scene and PETA

Leia can use the force to survive the deep cold vacuum of space now?

Using the force to make a hologram of yourself

Laura Dern making the heroic ultimate sacrifice when Admiral Akbar gets killed off in the blink of an eye. Really?

The best thing about Kylo Ren was the voice and mask, so then they get rid of the mask

Snoke, who was he and where did he come from????

Wasn't the Empire defeated in return of the Jedi? These new films just throw that out the window and start again with the first order??

General Hux or whatever his name is what poor casting for a stupid character?

Why did Luke project a hologram of himself when he had an x-wing fighter under the water on his island? Surely being there in person would be better?

Why did Luke die after projecting the stupid hologram?

Captain Phasma was even more useless in this film than she was in TFA!

The critics of Force Awakens is not going to like Last Jedi much either, I feel.

 

Last Jedi has many plot beats that echo Empire Strikes Back.. right down to the penultimate scene which echoed the last scene in ESB. 

 

But before I proceed... SPOILER ALERT warning

I will never forgive the idiot in my FB page who mentioned Yoda in the feed.. no spoiler alert. Nothing. So even before Yoda appeared, I knew exactly when he would. 

FFS idiots. SPOILER ALERT DAMMIT. FIRST WEEK YOU BASTARD

 

Despite the familiarity, I did enjoy the movie. I loved the humour.. sometimes irreverent and it isn't just for cheap laughs. Some of the jokes work because it feels like the writers themselves are fanboys and it is an inside joke. 

 

For what it's worth, I did like the fact that they let Luke pass on but keep Leia. I think she was a better resistance leader than Luke ever was and it was apt that she now pass the mantle to the next generation, even if it happens off screen. That scene where R2 plays the hologram. Damn. almost teared. 

 

I did like the fact that Rey was a nobody. So now Star Wars is no longer a Skywalker family tragedy. Just like Anakin coming from nowhere, Rey too was a nobody imbued with the Force. So the little kid sweeping the floor at the last scene looking up into the stars could grow up to be another Luke. 

 

I don't quite know how Rey learnt the Force so quickly but just like kid Anakin using the force subconsciously in Ep 1, I imagine some parts of this is innate. 

 

And I think the Snoke climax was pretty neat (altho once it was set in motion, u could see it coming a mile away). Obviously Kylo/Ben was much stronger than Snoke anticipated. Being able to present a different mental image to Snoke while he hid his real thoughts - is something far more powerful than "these aren't the droids you are looking for" subterfuge. But in that same vein. Luke obviously sensed that immense power too and was frightened by it.. 

 

So there is no explanation of who Snoke was. Again those fanboy who theorised about the emperor surviving or him being a clone must be pissed. 

 

Now I gotta go find Kevin Smith's reaction to Last Jedi.

I pretty much disagree with EVERYTHING you've said apart from the last line. Loved the movie but for gods sake hold it together girl. She seems rather limited as an actress which is a pity, but I guess Mark Hamill wasn't exactly in line for any Acdemy awards either in the first trilogy.

 

Can't believe anybody would criticise a Star Wars movie for it's cheesy humour...

Not sure how many people noticed but as he reached out for the broom it left the wall by itself and came to met his outstretched hand... I had a little chuckle to myself but I didn't notice a reaction by anybody else in the cinema and I know my wife missed it.

 

Pretty keen to see it again at the cinema. For me this easily stands on a par with ESB miles ahead of AFA once you get past the whole "Star Wars is back excitement". Kylo has grown a pair and become the nasty piece of worked we all craved. I loved the helmet smashing scene almost as much as when he destroyed the control panel in AFA.

Watched it this morning.   Despite all the hype i heard and read about it being a successor to Ep v - Empire Strikes Back, it was far..far from it.   I didnt mind the comedy, but what got boring was the long space chase between the 1st Order and the Resistance ships.  Absolute waste IMO.  Also the whole Luke and Rey on Ach To was a waste too.  It would have been better if he had snapped out of it earlier.  I thought that Force Awaken was slightly better, even if the acting was mediocre.  And the fight scene at the end, using really old rebel tech to take on the F-O, they could at least have used better speeders than that.  I felt ripped as they should have sent off Leia instead of Luke.  Sending off Luke in the next film would have done the series justice.   And to top it off, the First Order baddies seemed like a bunch of half witted empire rejects that cant get their act right.  Snorke was just a disappointment, if he was so strong with the dark side of the force..how the hell he didnt forsee a simple jedi force trick activating the light sabre that took him out....

I'm actually glad Luke went the way he did. I wasn't looking forward to seeing that, but I thought they did it perfectly, very Obi-Wan style.

I've had a chat with some friends, and all of them liked the movie a lot, but there are a few things (not necessarily scenes) that left doubts. In no particular order

 

- Bombers "dropping" bombs without gravity (but nevermind the fact that the ships "sound" in space)

- Leia coming back to the ship (I admit it, that's mine)

 

Can't remember any others at the moment. I did like Luke's "They're wrong" moment a lot.

Bit off topic, but am I the only one who's hoping for a Rogue One style fill in movie, between Return Of The Jedi & The Force Awakens?

 

There's obviously so much that went on during that time, both with Luke and everything that happened, as well as The First Orders formation.

Saw it today and enjoyed , but it seemed very convolutedand lots of pointless scenes and bizarre homages.

 

it seemed to me they were really trying to make a ESB , but it got complicated 

 

the space chase while tense, why did the FO launch Tie fighters and bombers to destroy the rebels ships. Why didn't the rebels split  up leaving the FO to work out which ship to chase. 

 

The first scenes with the bombers etc was cool, the end battle with the speeders seemed lame and was a bit of anti climax with shades of Hoth , only not as good? 

 

The  whole Code breaker casino thing seemed lame as mentioned as above, why did the FO pay DJ  for the information instead of simply threatening  him and why did they let him get away. Shades of Lando Carission? 

 

Rey goes to Kylo who takes her to Snoke - shades of Luke , darth  and the emperor  in the ROJ? 

 

The entire rebellion now fits on board the millennium falcon? 

 

Good bits 

 

mark hamill says stuff and is generally cool 

 

Mark driver I think does well 

 

the first space battle is good, but short and surely that dreadnought could have targeted the poe's x wing a bit better 

 

the Luke rey chat fest served its point , but Luke seemed to changed his mind pretty quick ? But wtf was the point of the Dark side room full of mirrrors? 

 

Leis was good I thought, but Laura dern role seemed pretty pointless.

Some good bits, some bad bits. Overall 7/10 for me.

 

Two things that really bugged me though

-Snoke is a great villain and they kill him off without explaining his back story?? What a wasted opportunity.

- Laura Dern’s character sacrificing herself to pilot the ship. Is there no auto pilot on a starship?

Have you ever not seen any starship pilot push a lever for hyperdrive? If it doesn't work it goes "chug-chug-chug".

It took him about 2+ hours to decide to help the rebellion, I mean, the resistance. Re the room with mirrors... I still can't figure out the meaning of Luke in Dagobah and Darth Vader's mask with his face, now that is fooked up! So yeah... uhmm... mirrors... part of it I guess.

Because there's like 15 left...

 

I think it took some balls to leave the rebellion in tatters. Even in the old movies the rebellion had heaps of followers. This is a new beginning, what with Luke and Han gone and Carrie Fisher RIP, the only ones left over are Chewie and the droids (and R2 doesn't really do much these days).

Thanks for pointing out that bomber bombs need gravity to work, something didn’t seem right with that scene. Also, why did the big tough Dreadnought Starship have such a gaping hole weak spot.

Also, since when did rebel or any large starships have force shields against incoming laser canon fire.

 

And yes Luke could have easily hyperspaced it to the rescue in seconds in person, although he would have been vaporised in the canon fire whereas a hologram could survive.

 

In the vacuum and cold of space Leia should have instantly froze like a tree stump in minus 270 C temperature and it is commonly known the human body fluids boil out through the skin and its not a pretty sight, unless of course those strong in the force can resist that.
