A new addition to the Death Star.....   I hope they don't fight over The Wiggles record!   Introducing Max Phillip Hoepfl, born 10th June at 7.03 am and weighing 3.33 kgs. We are b

  • Some of you may have been wondering why it has taken me soooo long to set my system up....   Well, Michelle and I had our Engagement Party yesterday and had a surprise wedding......so surprise!!

After a (long) year, my system is finally set up in it's new home!    Sounds even better (!) than previous digs due to room size/layout and carpet/concrete floor.    Quite an improvement!   I h

Very stealth like - hope the TT matches when it gets here.Mark :thumb:

yes, peacewise, gave them a good clean on the weekend! they will need a little dusting every week or so!

Grumps, TT will make it's way here in a couple of weeks....there is some black in it so it will all match visually and produce some nice music......getting excited to give the TT a spin!

Maybe some Audiophile cloths laid over the toys when not in use to cut down on dust collection. Seriously I had a friend in UK who used to place yellow dusters on all his hifi when it wasn't in use. His gear was always in pristine condition even after 10s of years of ownership. He has a mint condition 1982 Marantz CD63 still in everyday use and still uses IMF transmission line speakers he bought new.

Batty, the Sevens came with lovely soft protective covers, but I can't cover them....I love to hear them and see them daily!

They are my new boys! :)

Just have to look after them and dust them every week.....or so.....!

darth

I am getting worried about you (my new boys!). I am not sure if I would have been more worried about you if you referred to them as 'your new girls'.

You are getting a duster from me for Easter! As discussed.

Benje,

Well, people refer to ships as a She.......

The Sevens are definitely twin boys though......not sure how they will hunt for Easter Eggs though....

Thanks! A duster will make them happy as well.......

DUST Don't talk to me about DUST

With a Crazy Dog running in and out all day and night, Carpet, very, very old floorboards and old style doors and windows etc. it's impossible to keep the dust out and I'm forever dusting the equipment, but it's there the next morning. Not sure I could live with mirror black finish in my room.because of the dust factor.

Yes Grump, dust is a pain in the butt, even for a one person household with no pets!

Hopefully the Benje non electrostatic cleaning device will help!

I dust my house twice a year ! if it needs it or not.

Twice a year?!!!

Please dust before a Stump GTG! :P

These are bloody wonderful Mark, looking forward to your experience with a TT.

I love how you just went all out with the TT, no baby steps for you

Thanks R&R!

I'm looking forward to getting the TT and the cart and giving it all a whirl!

Watch this space!

hi Mark, just seen the pics of your new speakers! awesome!!! although i am still reeling from you getting a turntable? wtf!

lol whats next an 8track? all b/s aside awesome speakers and i think you will love vinyl. clicks and pop and all!

  • Author

Hi Peter,

Thanks....yes, WTF indeed! I still can't quite believe it myself! I have bought some vinyl and just waiting to get the TT shipped and some other odds and sods....

Pass on the 8-Track or a Tape Machine, that's for sure!

Not sure I will like the snap, crackle and pop of vinyl....a true test of my obsessive compulsive behavior I think.

I think I'll get over it....if not:

The Sevens are up to 250 hours now and just keep getting better.....

Found a cool article about how they are made.

Balsa Wood.

It's light. Really light. And stiff it turns out. It floats. It flies. And now it sings.

With a little help from a judicious coating with a very special form of carbon fiber, Vandersteen has turned balsa into the most amazing speaker I have heard (my opinion and no, I have't heard everything!).

Taking what he learned from the Model 5A, Richard Vandersteen went into the woodshed, or the physics textbook more accurately, and, setting all prejudice and techno BS aside, consulted the great scientists of history for consensus on the best material to make his new speaker out of. And they whispered, "Wood". And many, many months later the Model Seven was born.

Balsa Wood ? I use to make model Aeroplanes out of that when I was a wee Lad. I bet they sound like they fly Mark.

250 hours hmmmm. It sounds like you have got the stopwatch running. Ha Ha. The long weekend a good chance to clock up those hours.

  • Author

Yea, so did I Grump...made a few paper planes as well as a lad. Had some fun with them in classroom when I was a DathLaker Jnr.

The Sevens certainly make the notes fly all around the room (who needs multi-channel?!)

Lazz, yes, the stopwatch has been running! Actually I just keep a piece of paper handy with the start time and end time every day. Low tech I know but does the job!

500 hours is the burn in goal even though other Seven owners (including Richard Vandersteen) have said they keep getting better and better many hours after the 500 mark (!)

:o

I reckon my old VAF's took hundreds of hours to 'burn in' . I would never have believed it if I didn't hear it .

  • Author

Yes Grump, speakers and also cables and equipment needs to be burnt in.

Even after equipment is burnt in, it always sounds better after it's been turned on and warmed up......

Had to share this gem from Vandersteen's Technical Info, User Submitted Questions webpage: (http://www.vanderste...teenaudioqs.htm):

Adrianne (4/03/12):Concerning the model 7, my understanding is you need to carefully seal your carbon/balsa drives completely so that the balsa wood does not get exposed to moisture. Is there any risk that after many years of use/wear the carbon will degrade and allow moisture in? If this cannot occur, great. However, if this can occur after the warranty expires, what is a model 7 owner's recourse? Thanks

Answer: HELLO ADRIANNE, THE CONE IS COMPLETELY SEALED BECAUSE THE OUTER CARBON FIBER IS MOLDED. THE ONLY WAY THIS COULD BE COMPROMISED WOULD BE IF SOMEONE HIT IT WITH SOMETHING HARD ENOUGH TO FRACTURE THE CARBON SKIN (COULD NEVER HAPPEN JUST PLAYING MUSIC). THIS WOULD BE VERY DIFFICULT AND WHEN CONSIDERING THE COST OF THE MODEL SEVENS, UNLIKELY PEOPLE WOULD BE BEATING ON THEM WITH A STICK.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edited by darthlaker

So we can't bring sticks when you have a GTG Mark?

No sticks, nor children, nor pets.

DL's 'boys' are very 'immersive', politely telling you everything you wanted to know about a particular track.

I even heard tape hiss for the first time on The Dave Brubeck Quartet's 50 year old masterpiece on SACD last night. Perhaps the volume was up a little more than I normally listen at home.

... and after a glass or two
