Hey, As I now have a food temp gauge which also controls the pit temp of my Kamado, I have an iChef temp monitor surplus to requirements. It has a temp display you plug into but will also send temps to your phone if in bluetooth range. From memory it has 4 probes (at least 2 and 1 for the pit temp)... I'll have to dig it out. https://www.thebbqstore.com.au/p/maverick-bluetooth-bbq-thermometer-w-extended-rang/BT-600
Mr_B Posted April 12, 2021 Posted April 12, 2021 (edited) Made up a pid controller, after spending an afternoon playing with it think it’s going to turn out really well. Have a swing check valve on the way to see if it makes an improvement. Will also fit a PWM speed controller this weekend, I think it will make an improvement to consistent airflow. Looking forward to more of a play, and cooking something with it. Thanks for the inspiration! Edited April 12, 2021 by Mr_B 2

BugPowderDust Posted April 14, 2021 Posted April 14, 2021 One of the guys here on SNA invented and distributes the Smartfire bbq controller. https://smartfirebbq.com internet controllable bbq controller. Very handy to monitor your cool while you’re at the footy or the pub. Highly recommended. 1

He even has wireless meat probes now which would be awesome for the rotisserie. 1
BugPowderDust Posted April 15, 2021 Posted April 15, 2021 Smartfire is a truly great product. Mark worked with me while he developed it and he did it all himself. Prototyping, coding, testing, the works. He’s a great success story and with the Smartfire now sold in all Barbecues Galore (and some OEM arrangements he has with BBQ manufacturers) it’s great other people have been able to find it and enjoy it like we have.

Resting now for 1 hr wrapped. It felt really soft and gooy inside, all the gelatinous goo is rendered down and is my favourite thing with a brisket. The fluid(bourbon, garlic, bay leaves, and stock) will be gravy too. Hey glenm, mind sharing your values for m50, P and t? Still getting some overshoot, tuning is taking a bit of fiddling. Cheers
glenm64 Posted April 18, 2021 Posted April 18, 2021 I just put it in learning mode and let it program itself. It ramps up well. It starts to back off about 15 degrees below set point and then pulses up to reach and maintain temp. I have the top vent just cracked and the bottom vent closed fitted with the swing gate fan adaptor so the only airflow is from the fan. 1

Are you using lump charcoal instead of heat beads too? Try a cheap chimney from Bunnings to get em super hot first, then lay more on top without suffocating. 1 1

tubularbells Posted September 7, 2021 Author Posted September 7, 2021 (edited) Ive got a bunch of charcoal chimneys and electric starter wands and both decrease the start time of a charcoal fire by an easy 50%. With regards to chimneys the biggest mistake I see people do is dumping it too early as you really need to wait until flames are leaping from the rim and the top layer is ashed over before it's ready to use. Also natural lump charcoal lights easier than compressed manufactured products like briquettes and depending on the wood source some coal burns hotter than others (e.g. Mallee root doesn't burn as hot as Gidgee but Gidgee doesn't burn as long and has more ash content). And for those that reckon I don't have the cred. to talk about the stuff heres my reply after moving 1000 20kg bags of the stuff!!! Edited September 7, 2021 by tubularbells 4 2

I find the chimney works quicker for my Kamado than lighting in the pit with all air vents open. I guess it depends where you are lighting the fire. I set the chimney on the Kamado rack with a couple of natural firelighters or a couple of pages of newspaper. And yes in under 10 minutes flames are usually flowing out the top. 1
