A home theatre room on a budget DIY

Featured Replies

Thought I would share some photos of my Home theatre room.

I'm on a pretty tight budget so everything is DIY, helps when your an electrician but most of the gear is also budget conscious.

Speakers: Fronts: Richter Wizards Mk4 ex demo from Len Wallis last pair to be sold I think.

Centre: Richter Unicorn Mk4 from Audio Junction runout model half price

Surrounds: B@W DS6 the expensive item in room purchased before marriage

Surround back: Wharfdale $200 from grays I think

                Subwoofer: Richter Thor Mk 4

Reciever: Yamaha RXA 2000 refurbished model from Eastwood HiFi

Bluray Player: Sony  BDP-S790

HTPC running Kodi

Projector: Benq W1070

Ceiling was done by painting ceiling black first and than painting 12mm thick 1200 by 900 sheets of MDF with a stone textured paint and fixing to ceiling.

Fixed house frame timber sourced from building sites onto ceiling against cornice for LED strip lighting and then nailed 230 wide timber panels to that for the shelf and nailed 40mm by 20mm timber to that to hide the LED lights.

Led lights from bunnings at around $10 a roll.

Hooked up a 12v trigger cable from projector to relays normally closed contacts so when projectors turns on the LED lights turn off.post-113667-0-64745000-1445313572_thumb.post-113667-0-90224100-1445313677_thumb.post-113667-0-64478500-1445313719_thumb.post-113667-0-61332600-1445313884_thumb.

My main reason for doing this was for re-sale value. I would like to sell home in a couple of years, would sell with screen and projector still in place and put the proceeds to a dedicated stereo room. Really not into HT much anymore.

Update to System.

Integra 30.5 and Rotel 1552.

Thanks to Bruno28 for the Rotel. WOW! first time with separates and YES baby they do make a difference. Very happy. Was scared it wouldn't be an improvement over Yamaha Rx-a2000 but it kills it.

You've gone through a massive change and can take a while to tune the ears to a new sound, i reckon it ail just get better and better!

Nice work!

I think I now have a dilemma, I think the Elektra is too powerful for the Richter Wizards. When going thru Power Amp it was sounding very harsh so I pulled the out speaker wires and put into the 651R and it sounded sweet.

So looks I either need bigger speakers or to sell the Power Amp.

Have you level matched properly with the elektra driving proceedings?

Sound odd that it would be "harsh"

sounds odd to me. the elektra is the definition of iron fist in a silk glove. as a note my first experience of elektra many years ago was with richter centre, surrounds etc. shouldn't be harsh….

not to say speaker upgrades don't bring gains…. but as suggested by pie face…sounds like something else going on...

Sorry but what is "Elektra driving proceedings"?

  • Author

Good examples were Hotel California and Linda Randstadt poor pityful me. I am sure anyone doing a blind test would pick the audio coming straight from the 651R everytime.

Sorry mate. With the elektra driv8ng the speakers. The gain staging might be different between the 651r power section and the preouts to the elektra.
You would need to level match seperately for each power section...
