A forbidden pleasure today....and I really enjoyed it!

G'day all, my first post in this forum area (on food anyway).  Well today I decided to have something different for lunch and I wasn't sure how I'd react!  I bought (meat pies and pasties) for my family and myself.

We have some fantastic pie shops in our town, but I haven't eaten a pie for some years owing to my diabetes and the very high carb/high GI content of the average pie and similar pastries.

In fact the last time I ate a pie I became terribly ill from a massive rise in my BGL's (blood glucose levels), but that was long before I got my diabetes under good control, so today I was willing to risk it, and thankfully I didn't get ill at all, and I, in fact we all thoroughly enjoyed the culinary experience.  For what it's worth I ended up having a pie, a pastie and a sausage roll.  Maybe not again for a while though. :)  Regards, Felix.

Now you've done this, Felix ... you can go further ... and even have Christmas pudding for Christmas lunch!  :D   When I want Christmas pud, I simply inject several more units of fast-acting insulin into the fat around my navel (which is the place where it comes into effect, the quickest), half an hour before the pud is eaten.  The normally rapid - and excessive - rise in blood sugar resulting from eating the pud is counter-acted by this extra insulin ... so the pud doesn't actually cause much of a rise. :thumb:

G'day mate, all noted.  Thanks to my daily gym training my daily morning (Lantus) insulin dose (in my stomach) is quite low, so it will be interesting to see what tomorrows BGL reading will be.  Christmas pudding hasn't caused me any real problems in recent years for which I'm eternally thankful.  Regards, Felix.

Best pies i ever had were from a pie cart in central Lismore. I had one and it was great! I had another next time down there a few years later an it was exactly as the previous one.

I normally avoid the things as i find most horrible, but these were/are exceptional.

Luc would know these I think :)

Surprising, Felix - you only take 1 injection of Lantus each day?

My specialist has had me on a different regime, ever since Lantus came out (so at least 15 years):

  • 1 daily injection of Lantus (18 units) to provide a basal release of insulin, with
  • an injection of fast acting insulin (NovoRapid) before breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Supplemented by additional injections if I have misjudged what I eat and am too high, 2 hours after the meal.

I find this easier to keep BSLs in line as it more closely mimics a 'normal' body's insulin production.  The problem I found with having only one dose of insulin each day was that this locked you in to the one insulin release cycle ... you couldn't vary the time of meals as easily or the amount you ate.

Regards,

Andy

Yup.

The Pie Truck is still there and a butcher I know owns it now and he just kept the recipe for the pastry and the fillings going and sources his own meat.

Next time your down here leyt me know as the original owner still has a pie shop going at(sworn to secrecy)erm..place and for two hours(normally ) on a Friday morning from 6 to 8 he does a prawn pie using fresh caught river prawns only hours out of the water...

to die for...in a cream garlic-y sauce with chives .

Everyone who knows about them usually keeps mum coz they don't want everybody to know about them.

Worst way to start a fishing trip is to call in there at 6.15 only to find your breakfast pie has sold out :(

Cheers, Luc.

If i do I'll maybe have a pie with ya', depending on availability

Edit: Prawn Pie, sounds intriguing.

G'day all, oh man I'm really hungry!  Andyr:  on the Lantus, only seven units early in the morning, just one pen shot per day thankfully.  Before I got things in order I was injecting up to 17 units in one hit.  Again thankfully, good adherence to low GI nutrition has helped enormously along with daily gym sessions  I have worked hard at it.  Regards, Felix.

Scallop pies are a staple here, as you say, one of the best pies you can get :thumb:

Rabbit and bacon is another... bloody delicious!

This isn't a good thread to read when you still haven't had breakfast...

G'day all, well my measured BGL this morning before insulin was a surprising low 8.3.  That was a lot lower than I expected!  Regards, Felix.

I find with things like this that It's more the impending thought of doing it is hard, but once I get past that and just do it....It's not that bad at all :)

Have a great day, Felix.

  • 4 weeks later...

Possibly the best sausage roll I've ever had was from an ice cream/sandwich shop in Ballina. Main St location on a corner and has a sign with a Koala eating ice cream. :)
