My Next Horns

The pair that @Upfront and I had built maybe over decade ago were really great. Loved them paired with goto unit sg-38wn 15” woofers.  They did 50-350hz nicely. The thing I liked most about them was how well they integrated with the midlow horn channel.  I remember thinking of them as the final frontier to my multiway horn journey.

I foolishly disposed of the horn during my ‘leaving hifi’ phase.   But as we all know, the itch never goes away and here we are. 🙂  Reunited with Mick’s pair he had built.  I no longer have the goto unit woofers, but do have some other drivers that hopefully work as well (EV 15b, Altec 515b, JBL E140, PHL 5061m and yamahas).

Martin has also made some beautiful 340hz horns for the 8” rullit fcs. Not much horn loading going on with such a shallow profile for a 8” throat, more like a big waveguide.  Should be a nice combo with the azura bass horns.

Great looking setup Tuyen.

Is the skeletal plinth turntable in the previous photo a 16 inch Commonwealth?  What's the arm and cartridge you are using?  The arm looks like a Ortofon RF297 style but with a longer arm.

Did you try your Aero 8 in Martin's larger Oris style horn?  Did you notice a difference?

I'm about to start making a large mouthed square front horn for the Rullit Super Aero 9's.  Using 15 inch field coils for the lower frequencies.  Think it will be a great match.

You should be getting some wonderful sounds with your lovely looking system combo.

Hey mate,

that’s actually photos of Martin’s room that I have to agree is a great looking room. High ceilings, nice dimensions and has the relaxed/chill feel when listening to music (not too big/dark or over treated/sterile room feel).

he is running a garrard 401 and a modded lenco. I’m not too sure what arms they are but I know a couple of them are his own creations.  Spu and Denon 103 are his carts.    I only run a technics sl1500c with a AT cart nowadays. Basic setup.

I ran my rullit aero 8 on his 160 for a while.  I ran it full range (essentially a wide band driver) but needed bass and treble support (azura bass horn and goto unit tweeter).    I liked that setup but was a long time ago.    Horn loading the rullit with big 160 horn (no rear enclose) really skews the freq response to have too much midrange energy as compared to when running the rullit in OB or ported.    I’ve never heard the rullits in a the large floorstanding square front horns I’ve seen online before so curious on how you find them 🙂    There’s a few 15” fc woofer options out there now.   WVL, EMS Fertin, ESONIC from Canada, Rullits, GIP, Kanzen….   They all look really good. Interested to hear how you find yours!   Im Not sure what direction I will take re for bass yet. Currently running a JBL e130 in the bass horns.

What Martin has made for me now is a pair of 340hz profile horns for the rullits. Very shallow as the throats only go to an 8” throat.  More like a waveguide than that much horn loading happening.    I got the idea from Murat doing similar with his AER driver (https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/goto-6-way-timealigned-horn-system.282736/page-16).

sounded great in Martin’s system. I’ve yet to set it up on my setup.   Running a TAD 4002 be driver on the 160s currently. Enjoyable!

After all these years, I’m still completely addicted to listening and playing with horn speakers, even though my listening room keeps getting smaller 😂

hope you are doing well!

Yay I finally get to post in this thread 🥰.  These are my next horns.  Also my first and probably last horns.  Avantgarde Colibri crossed to 15” REL subs @ 75Hz via minidsp and Dirac applied.  Best sound I’ve ever experienced in my home.IMG_0163.thumb.jpeg.a92b6e6e8c3ce7986085de6193ca7a37.jpeg

beautiful horns, drivers and set up Tuyen. With those images we can almost hear the magic. Good stuff! You have been busy lately.

Alan.

Nice use of the speaker stands

Amazing set-up Tuyen, what fabulous and exotic gear you have assembled, - and keep assembling. Would love to hear it all one day. Are the horn drivers physically attached to the stands in any way, can't see from the photo's. I reckon a big long tie-rap would be the order of the day if not, would be a great shame to knock one off someday.

 Thanks Ged.

Certainly welcome to come by have a listen and catchup sometime.  Have a few hours most weekends that I am free from daddy duties to chill and play hifi 🙂 I’ll msg you…

regarding the horn drivers, there is a pull tie down strap that secures the driver (most of the weight) to the speaker stand (very heavy as it’s sand filled).  Difficult to push it over but not impossible..

Sounds good mate looking forward to it. I have a rotten case of the flu ATM but after this coming weekend should be great.

Excited to play with some newly acquired Vintage Relics , many thanks again to Tuyen.

Altec 515B 15” Drivers and the Micks ex monster JBL 2360 Horns.

Couldn’t wait for quick sound check , amazed at the 515a feel of their soft super linear suspension , bolted the Altec 515 woofers into the old Folded Horns from Altec model 1215A and sounding just beautiful, far exceeds the La Scala / JBL E140 bass bin sound.

Bolted on a spare  JBL 2240 comp drivers to the giant JBL horns ,  wow , also a treat to listen to as unlike normally being too shouty and in your face sounding , these horns offer a softer and far wider soundstage with a softer power projection , it’s  just huge and very easy on the ears. Similar tone to the Line Magnetic LM3 WE 12a mid horn in a way.

Lots to do but very promising so far for a rewarding new build. Thankful to have the available room to accomodate such massive units.

Happy Days… studio 23

Where are you crossing over on that set up Volker?

Using the old Klipsch La Scala passive X over for now.
Modified lots but lows 6db/ 400hz , Mids 12db/ 400 to 3000hz , highs 12db/ 3000 hz upwards.
Seems to work outstandingly well with 75watt BAT VK75SE Tuber.

Sounds huge. It's a very interesting combination that allows all three crossover points to be fairly low.

That sounds very open and uncompressed, like live music!  Awesome stuff Volker. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve hooked in some horn tweeters with a 2uf cap (faital pro hf108r + azurahorn ah-1100) to add in bit more sparkle above the rullit field coils.  Be rolling in around 10khz.    All fun!

Those 2360's are real nice horns. They project deep and wide. Beautiful build design and construction too with the huge aluminium throat section.

Quick sound check before home time , fiddling with Passive XO variables but pretty promising so far. LHS Tops out of Phase hence lacks Sound Density etc on the Vid.
Should make a decent all day sound work horse yet…
Happy Days V

Nice Volker! That setup is a big step up in size and quality of components from the la Scalas which were already very nice sounding in your workshop.  Must pop over for a listen sometime please 🙂

Martin (Azurahorn) currently working on a bolt-on throat extension for the bass horns to run a 8” driver (ie b&c 8pe21).  Modelling on hornresp looks like a good match.    Martin ran a lowther 8” fr driver many moons ago and the freq response looks very good.     It will certainly be interesting to hear how bass from a front horn loaded 8” driver with a much lighter cone than say a 15” woofer is…

Interesting! Would you then need another bass horn to cross below the 8”..?

What efficiency are you hoping for?

Calculated output of b&c 8PE21.

A sub bass channel below the bass horn is not essential but it helps. I have a single tapped horn with a JBL 2225h 15”  that is tuned to get below 30hz with very little effort.  Also a pair of REL t3 in case there’s some gaps that needs filling.

A great thread with a memorable cast and support cast. The only bit I hoped for was more comment on how it all sounded.
