Agree - I've caterred a few events - big drinkers too - regardless of the 9 hours not many wil actually top off 18 stubs without pouring them out- along with a few glasses of champane or reds as well - you might get some but it would balance out.

You would be ok to average out at 12 stubs per person with a couple of cartoons - hidden away for back up suggest +3.  Then cater some reds 2 glasses per person on the boys side and a round of toast champange.  you should get about 5 glasses per bottle because people generlly pur them heavy if your letting them ppour there own.  Its better if you have a barman who can keep a lid on the heavy handed guests.

Have pleanty of water and non acholoic options available if its hot.

The girls you could halve it on average - 6 drinks but have a few  more back ups especially on the champas at a wedding.

In the first 4 hours - things wil look like you dont have enough but then it will slow down.

if the backs up don't go then it's money in the bank for you.

congrats - have fun.

Spot on.  This day and age there's plenty of drinkers who look for some water to control things.

At that drinking rate you might as well count in an ambulance car as well....

ok..so I made an error in my pissedness calculation in the earlier post.

1 x Stubby/hr (1.4 std drinks) for 9 hours = 9x1.4x0.01 - 9x0.01 = 0.036% BAC

2 x Stubbies/hr = 0.072%  0.162% !!

quite a big difference.      12 stubbies over 9 hours works out to 0.078%,  which I think is a pretty good 'target'.

Now I know this is dependent on many factors,   but I think it's a good starting point.

ok..so I made an error in my pissedness

I had a mate in high school who used to get paralytic on one (yes, one!) West Coast Island Cooler.  At the start of the night you'd be standing next to him chatting and he'd be fine, then you look away and talk to someone else for 5-10 minutes, turn back and he'd be on the ground off his face, barely able to talk or move like he'd had 18 beers in 9 hours...funny stuff, we nicknamed him "instant pissedness"...your post reminded me of this.

Sorry, back to the topic...

so much depends on demographics as was said and individual people.

there is a way around all this .

ie control the drinks heading out.

eg champagne made available for toasting. but its not freely available other wise.

our wedding we had  a bottle of whisky or vodka on each table. and we didn't do the champagne thing. instead I had a couple of slabs of crownies for the beer drinkers which there were only few. culturally the spirits were a requirement. and with about 10 largish tables we had about 10 bottles of spirits. I worked for an alcohol company at the time and quantity wasn't a problem, I went by suggestion from other family members and we had plenty left over.

alcohol was only just a reception though the actual ceremony we had tea and coffee with goodies made by family members which suited the outdoors ceremony at a public garden. some did bring along some bottles of champagne they cracked open after the ceremony but not something we provided.

we certainly didn't think through the alcohol as you did. but I would consider splitting the event, pacing the alcohol otherwise this is sounds like going to be a mess with 9 hours of drinking marathon !

Does OP have any indication of how long how many people will be staying for the full 9 hours ?

Just have a BYO wedding.

Problem solved.  :hiccup  :party

It's hard to tell, but I guess the vast majority will be there until the end. It finishes at midnight and there's busses taking people back to hotels about 20km away. So leaving early might be difficult.

I hate tricky questions like this.

Can't we talk about something else, like "which is the best Pink Floyd album" or "Vinyl vs CD" ?

or how about not not spend all that money on the reception and spend it on a s/h AMR cd-77.  :D

anyhoo - working on the fact you cant get that passed the bride to be, then i think as above a good for catering od a wedding for that long - if your busing people in/out then you dont want to run out too early.   12 + 6 + toasting + couple of glasses of red for dinner  + back up which you only bring ut latter if you need them.

Agree with the senitment that even big drinkers wil nowdays look for a water or two to keep things level headed.

IMO culturally beer is the go in AUS outdoor weedings - a few bottle of spirits is ok for those that stay late or close mates ect, again not out on display or striclty controlled by a good bar man.

let us know how it goes

140 RSVP's in so time for some shopping! This is what I think will be enough for the wedding, plus a bit for the day before and after (it's a weekend away wedding)

40 slabs of beer (30xfull, 7xmid, 3xlight)

60 bottles of red

60 bottles of white

80 bottles of bubbles

+ a few bottles of spirits to hide away.

Hopefully we can get close to $4000. Wine will be through a mate who should be able to get wholesale prices. Beer will be whatever specials I find over the next couple of months.

wow ! thats some serious amount of alcohol ! have you factored in water, soft drinks etc…pretty much need 1 for one and heaps of food or this number of people.

make sure in a position with the retailer to return anything left over….that way if have gone over…won't be bother :)

with beer it might be better off with this kind of quantities to get a keg float in. this is possible and cheaper by the keg. its just a refrigerated trailer. and there are heaps of people that provide this service.

Plus it tastes better from a keg...

It certainly is. I'm sure it's a bit too much, but that's OK. I'd rather too much than not enough.

yeah there'll be plenty water and mineral water and a little soft drink too. and lots and lots of food.

I'm tossing up the idea of kegs, but not convinced it will save any money. I've only checked kegsonlegs.com.au which is $310/50L of VB/Draught. This works out to $6.20/L (not including equipment hire). Equivalent to buying slabs at $56 each!

yeah shop around, check the sums, all just comes down to volume and numbers. the bonus with slabs is he variety can buy and also can return if unused. its low maintenance too as people can help themselves, kegs often need a bit of tending and yes theres the equipment hire.

+ breakages!

We had our wedding cocktail party reception at a winery, made things easy. From memory it cost us just shy of $2000 for 60 odd guests, many of whom were non or very light drinkers. I personally had one of those evenings where I couldn't get pissed, no matter how much Sparkling Burgundy I consumed... They made a very nice one ;)

For your light beer I suggest Coppers Blue. Relatively unknown so pretty cheap and probably the most tasty light beer going. As a plus it is also has the fewest calories. I used to drink it when bike racing where weight gain was always a concern.

seems very cheap for cocktails. how long was the reception for?

the killer for us is the 8hr duration.. . . .and the number of guests and demographic I guess.

Well cocktail party in description only, as it was a stand up finger food party. Being late May in the Yarra Valley, it was almost all wines consumed. From memory it was about 6 hours for the reception. Not too many chose to stay near by either, so most couples had a designated driver too.

I've checked a few options today I don't think there's much hope of getting kegs for a price that would make it cost effective. I'd need about $250/keg for VB/Draught to beat typical slab prices.

Kegs actually start to be better value for 'craft' beers though. A craft keg is maybe 20% more than VB/Draught, but the slab equivalent is probably 50% more.

I don't think out budget can stretch to fancy beer though.

I went to Bridge Rd Brewery in Beechworth  (30 min from our wedding venue) last weekend,  tasted a few beers and asked about kegs.      $300 per 50L keg, and the loan you the tap/s etc for free.  Un-used kegs can be returned.     Pretty bloody reasonable I reckon,  especially considering the same beer sold in slabs is $80!.

Very tempting.  Slabs of VB etc would still be a bit cheaper,  but the bridge rd beer is very nice and probably worth a little extra.

I'm just a bit worried about the logistics of kegs, glasses,  someone to pour  etc...and the wastage.     Anyone got any experience with putting on kegs for a function?
