So I've had a look around and decided I'm just going to use snap lock sandwich bags for now.

I'll only be preparing 4-6 doses at a time (make 2-coffees per day) and fine with preparing the beans during the day, its just in the morning half asleep it bugs me weighing them out etc.

But thanks for planting the seed!

I've got a little scoop (came with some protein powder) that holds only a bit more than I want (16 gm) so it's easy to get the right weight on my 'drug' scales.

I have read, and never tried it, that it's best to dose by ground volume and not bean weight.

For storage I use 250 gm or 500 gm valved bags. To keep them clean for re-use I put the beans into a small freezer bag first. Since I only roast 250 gm at a time I just leave them on the counter next to the grinder.

But you guys are assuming zero retention?

I mean 18 grams of whole beans != 18grams ground beans.

I have a timed grinder that gets me close to the 18 grams each time but I still weigh after grinding because I'll still have to add or remove up to a few 10ths of a gram.

Hello coffee lovers!

I've had my Breville Barista Express for several days now and I'm quite impressed with the results, especially considering it cost similar (less than some) to the better Nespresso machines out there. I did enjoy my Nespresso, but it's like chalk and cheese. It's not like I haven't had good barista coffee before, but I guess I forgot what I'm missing as I rarely get it, since I rarely drink coffee later in the day.

Besides the extra work, I'm glad I got this machine. I haven't even got into tweaking settings, grind levels etc, but have been pretty satisfied with most cups I've made. I just brewed some that I expected to be terrible, as it never got pressurised (later realised water was out). I expected that I wouldn't want to drink it, but it tastes good. Made with Fish River Roasters - Tiger Snake.

So besides the FRR beans, I have been using Sacred Grounds blend from Peru iirc. The problem is they are very similar. I would like a bit of variety. I tend to go for the malty, choc, dark fruit flavours, but they can be too intense sometimes. Occasionally I feel like something lighter.

I started by adding 18g of beans to the grinder, for a double, as per a chef I follow, and was happy with results. Turns out my machine grinds about that much automatically, so while grinding per cup/s, I just pour in enough for a couple and if there's a bit leftover, so be it.

For that type of machine (ie integrated grinder), I would recommend keeping the hopper loaded. In my experience (I had an Oracle previously), the weight of beans in the hopper affects the grind consistency.

The Versalab is zero retention, well, within 0.1g of it

I went to a Pharos manual grinder because the shaking and smacking the electric to get all the grinds out was a pain and stale grounds did little for the taste. For multiple coffees a few minutes retention is acceptable.

I've seen guys on youtube.com use test tubes pre-filled. I'm not sure if these are made specifically for coffee aficionados

Yes they are different, you want it to allow CO2 to be released in freshly roasted beans without letting Oxygen in

Hey coffee lovers.  I have a Behmor 1600 roaster which I used to use all the time before I purchased my Kaffelogic 7.  I had a couple of random Err2 messages pop up which meant I had to bin my roasts, so gave up on the unit.  I had recently installed a new afterburner too.

Could be something super minor, or could be good for parts.

It's free to a good home, pick up in Caroline Springs area.  PM me before I put the post up on coffeesnobs where I'm sure it will be taken in no time.

Cheers

I have been contemplating getting an Oracle Touch. It seems like a good compromise as my partner only wants a fully automatic one without any fuss.

Can someone who owns The Oracle Touch advise what’s the cons with this machine? Is it a good one to spend $3+ k on?

Been naked for years!

Don't own one and never used one, but, in general, Breville make good consumer level machines. The only concern with the specs is that 15 bar pressure is quite high and will limit the shot quality, however it would be possible to get someone to alter that for you (it would void the warranty though). If it gets your wife using the machine though then its a good step up to something more adjustable.

Thank you for the advice prof. Do you mean the high pressure will burn the coffee and make it bitter? Which rating is reasonable?

Would you recommend this, say over my existing Mahlkonig K30 Vario Air Grinder?

I love the timed dosing of this, but I can't see there's much other functionality that is important to me.

Over 10 years ago I had a friend with a lathe convert the PF that was dedicated to single dose to a naked PF

That long ago not many options were available to enthusiasts

I have been full analog with machine and grinder

My grinder is the manual doser Mazzer Robur

It depends on what you are looking for. The Versalab will give you amazing flavour clarity and can handle a wide range of roast styles and grinds. It will be different from the Vario but not wildly different, it's like stereo gear at that equivalent price point, none of it is bad, or better, just different strengths and weaknesses. I've had the Versalab since 2006 though and I'm yet to find anything better, apart from the M4, and now I've upgraded to that. If you are ever visiting the north-east, bring your Vario and we can compare them.

@TechnoDoll

"This commercial feature limits the 15 bar Italian pump pressure throughout the extraction, preventing bitter flavours in the shot."

I think this is just badly worded in their spiel. The 15 bar spec seems to be common for pumps, but the brewing pressure is controlled separately by the pressure valve, to the proper 9 bar, or whatever.
