Banh Mi Appreciation

Featured Replies

Anybody into banh mi? We found a really nice Vietnamese restaurant in  leederville, handily across the road from Urban Records. I usually go for crackle pork , tho today I tried char siu, Sharon had crackle pork and daughter had tofu. Freshly made and darn tasty.

Dang, now I'm hungry Dave :hyper:😬

Always up for a good Banh Mi.

Our local bakery - Tompkins Bakery, is excellent. BBQ Pork $11 for this one.

Dang , BBQ and roast pork 😍😍😍

Who doesn't like Banh Mi?!

If you're in the Eastern suburbs of Adelaide this place is really good -

5/476 Portrush road, Linden Park

A lot of people say the best Banh Mi in Melbourne is either Bun Bun or Tabac in Springvale. They are next to each other. Bun Bun has a "tiger bun" (it has stripes) and the texture of the bread is to die for. Another good Banh Mi in Springvale is Anloi (in the arcade).

@sir sanders zingmore has already mentioned Trang's in Camberwell, but I think it's a bit meh. It's definitely meh compared to this new place which opened just up the road from me:

TK's Banh Mi - 3/1407 Toorak Rd, Camberwell. There is so much meat and the price is really reasonable. Unfortunately they are very slow! If you count 5 people in front of you, that means there are probably another 10 people hiding somewhere (usually they order, then run off to IGA or the Asian market, then come back to pick it up). It will take about 20 min to get your Banh Mi. So do what everyone else does - order your Banh Mi, go shopping, then come back to get it.

Bun Bun and Tabac are "salad rich" Banh Mi. Anloi is "pate rich". This one is "meat rich". Which one you prefer depends on your view of what a good Banh Mi is. I personally like more pate and balanced meat and veggies, which means Anloi is my favourite. TK has too much meat, and both Bun Bun and Tabac have too little. But no question that Bun Bun bakes the best buns. IMO there is no such thing as perfection in Banh Mi, there are only different Banh Mi's for different tastes.

Yep agreed there.  Bun Bun lately imo is a bit meh, definitely cutting down the amount of meat to salad ratio.  Anloi is definately the better of the three atm for me.  There was a cafe at Mt Waverley that used to have one of the best 'meat rich' bahn mi's, the owners were so generous with the pork and crackling that whenever i ate one, i'd skip dinner.  Sadly they retired and its now a kebab shop.

This is the famous "Alex N Rolls" Banh Mi in Marrickville, Sydney. The Banh Mi that some Vietnamese chef said is better than the Banh Mi in Vietnam. It was a bit of a hike to get there from my AirBNB in Sydney CBD, especially since I had to go twice. The first time I arrived at 1:30pm and they had SOLD OUT. So I went again. This time there was a huge queue that moved really slowly. When you get to the shop, you see why. There are 4 employees there, but only one employee was taking orders and making Banh Mi. The others were at the back chopping meat, making pate, and doing goodness knows what.

This one nails the balance between pate, salad, and meat, although the sandwich would have benefited from a bit more filling. There is more pate than you realize, so the eating experience is really messy. The bun is so crusty that it flakes everywhere, and pate oozes out when you eat. It's an excellent Banh Mi, but not better than Anloi in Springvale IMO. And Anloi isn't as messy to eat.

Wow, that Banh Mi shop sells sandwiches AND turntables!

The beef short rib one at Tung Thit isn’t bad…..

Still I’d rather be strolling around Hoi An again enjoying a local one any day

Been having them for years.  I like the 5 color meat Banh Mi 😊

From experience the better banh mi are usually found where there are a lot of local competitions. In the late '90s banh mi in Bankstown (Sydney) were sold for $2 and sometimes include a can of cold soft drink. The shopping strip around Bankstown Hi Fi at the time were particularly competitive.

For anyone visiting the North side of Adelaide some notable banh mi shops include:

  • Vietnam House in Salisbury North (great fillings)
  • Nhu Lan On Hanson in Woodville Gardens (great rolls and vegetarian options)

The cheap ones are usually full of carrot or the cheapest vegetable at the markets.

No matter how much you shop around...............unless you are a regular, you just get what's convenient or profitable.

It's five different cuts of cold meats. Chicken, ham, meatloaf, and a couple of others. Vietnamese people tell me it was the original Banh Mi ... but when I was in Vietnam there were so many types, same as what we get here. And this is an unpopular opinion ... but IMO the Banh Mi there is no better than it is here. Smaller, and more veggies and less meat. Maybe that's the way it's supposed to be (after all, we're in Vietnam!) but I genuinely think that some Aussie Banh Mi's are superior.

The same can't be said about the sheer variety of Vietnamese food you can get over there. IMO Vietnamese is one of the great cuisines of the world, it's so under-rated. It's light, fresh, healthy, balanced, and cheap. Very little oil and fat, and they practice nose to tail eating.

American youtuber try out Banh Mi from Bun Bun and give his ratings.

A lot of anger that To’s was left off this list but saw this today. Might be helpful to some
