Coffee Setups

Featured Replies

A significant upgrade to my old Silvia/Rocky setup for making coffee here has arrived. Still dialing in the grind setting but already getting consistent shots.

ECM Synchronica with DF64 Gen 2 Grinder.

Nice thread & nice coffee rig @oldrose 👍. Here is my setup. I have an Izzo Alex Duetto Mk3 machine plumbed into a Brita C150 undersink water filter, and Macap M4D grinder. The Duetto seems to help you out and wants  to make a good shot even if the Barrista skills are lacking. The PID definitely helps in that respect with consistent brew temperature. Overall it's a good machine, even though I mainly use it to steam milk for hot chocolates these days .

Trusty Rocket Mozzafiato heading in for a service next week, might have to polish it up beforehand. Mazzer Mini grinder still going strong although it seems  the single-dose low retention grinders are all the rage these days.

Izzo machines aren't that well known in this country, but are respected on places like Coffee Snobs. I'm happy with my  Duetto Mk3 which seems to deliver consistent results.

I was just chatting to a friend today who made the same switch a few years ago and gave the ranchillo machine to his son! ( mind you he doesn’t have 3 pairs of high end speakers, se amps and 3 great turntables)

Im looking at a rocky doser

I am a newbie to the whole doser thing so I had quite a chat with friend….think I might give it a whirl but I’m interested in what anyone has to say

Excellent grinder for home, however these days for home use a Hopper grinder is being made obsolescent by single dose, low retention grinders. If I was replacing it now I'd be looking at something like the Mazzer Philos, Varia VS6 or Niche Zero.

If you got one as part of a deal it would be OK but I wouldn't look for one these days.

I picked up an older Mazzer Super Jolly recently. I’ve been trying to find a manual for it but no luck yet.   I wonder if there’s a coffee equivalent to Audio Engine ?

Work set up, favourite part of my morning ritual.

Not humble at all. My next coffee machine (after I sell my current setup) will likely be this pod machine and matching steamer, owing to the fact I mostly drink organic tea these days -  https://drinkmorning.com.au/collections/machines/products/the-morning-machine-and-dream-bundle?variant=51476332478677

I have the Fellow Stag kettle at home, at work I just use a Stainless Steel Bodum coffee cup to pour from and the grinder is the Option O Lagom mini, great little grinder for pour over.

Here is the link to the pod machine by itself - https://drinkmorning.com.au/collections/machines/products/the-morning-machine?&variant=43695724232917. As always you may be able to find a better deal through another reseller. Chris from Talk coffee commented that that machine is the closest he has seen in pods to anything drinkable. Though he noted it is not suited to the stainless steel DIY style pods fyi.

If you want to reclaim some space then bin those white pages.  So old school Al...

This has been my set-up for about 8 years.  The machine does a good job, but has had to be repaired a few times.  It's at the stage where, if it breaks down, it's gone.  It's lived an easy life, one cup a day, plus a few espresso martinis from time to time.

I had a Macap grinder but a stone ruined it.  This Breville grinder is my third ion 8 years, and got a stone stuck this morning!  Fortunately I was able to save it without damage.  Why is it that the cheapie survives???

This is the next machine that I have my eye on -

So I've added an accessory to my set-up that has dialled my shots back in like they should be.  Why wasn't I using this from the beginning???  This is it -

pic_5_b2ae3ef6-83c4-4c5d-b34b-37d9d94ca6

I could bang on about how great it is, but who the duck would listen to me?  Using this scale I have now learnt that my traditional Italian basket is 14gms - geez I've bean (sic) loading that little sucker up!  So now I grind out 14gms and pull 28gms of espresso.  The scale has a timer - all dialled in and simple.

It has me thinking, what other accessories do I NEED?  Recommendations please, I'm all ears.

I have to get a WDT manual distribution tool.  Yes I could use a toothpick, but that isn't cool.  A magnetic dosing funnel? Yep, on the list.  What about tampers?  I have a manual (analogue?) Pullman at the moment, but like the look of the Normcore V4.1 spring loaded self leveller.

I may even venture in to 18gm territory...

Yep, I've had an Acaia Lunar scale for a good few years and couldn't do without it. Definitely recommend a precision basket, mines a VST 18g. Pull a 27g shot but could go 36g if you can handle the Caffeine buzz.

Normcore tampers are great and take all the guess work out of the tamping process.  Also use a WDT tool that came with a magnetic dosing funnel.
