Abel Selaocoe - Four Spirits

61CEIebY+YL._AC_SX679_.jpg

The new album from South African cellist Abel Selaocoe. A live recording of his Cello Concerto Four Spirits performed with the Aurora Orchestra in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London. My order arrived today, just a couple of days early. Like his previous release Hymns Of Bantu, it is infused with African rhythms and percussion along with his distinctive vocal style (in fact the track Tsohle Tsolhe from Hymns Of Bantu is also played live in this album.) In this recording he gets the orchestra and the audience to all sing along with him, effectively becoming a large choir.

The clip below is a live recording of him performing Four Spirits with the same orchestra and percussionist, although this was recorded in Hamburg, Germany whereas the album was recorded in London.

Daughters Of Donbas - Songs Of Stolen Children

A CD I bought at Womadelaide last weekend.

20260311_232436.jpg

One of my personal highlights from Womadelaide this year. (I deliberately avoided all the hip-hop oriented acts that seem to be infesting Womad lately. I can't stand hip-hop!)

I came across quite a good review of this album just before attending Womadelaide, link below.

A fave at Womadelaide 2026

< The highly anticipated debut album from Amsterdam-based Indonesian psych-folk ensemble Nusantara Beat, has finally arrived. Having built a rapidly rising reputation through captivating live performances and a string of acclaimed 7" singles (Bongo Joe Records), this self-titled album powerfully extends an already potent musical vision.

A mesmerizing collection of eleven original tracks, Nusantara Beat delves deep into the group’s Indonesian ancestral roots, and thrillingly weaves together hypnotic folk melodies, vintage Indo-pop, pulsating psychedelic grooves and contemporary sonic textures.

That word Nusantara is important. As the group’s vocalist, Megan de Klerk, explains:

“Nusantara means all the islands that make up Indonesia. It’s an old word from when the kings wanted to unite the whole archipelago. Today, it still means unity, many cultures coming together as one. So, when we say Nusantara Beat, we mean the rhythm and music from the Indonesian archipelago, mixed into one sound.” >
