Not sure about that one. Would need to give it more thought, as showing who has got it enabled potentially exposes those that choose not to as potential targets.

True, very valid point

Okay thanks Marc

Yes, Google Authenticator.

Can't do it, Marc. Google Authenticator requires a payment option (CC/Paypal/gift card), and I don't have any payment options on my phone (nor will I).

I use other 2FA/MFA options that do not require me to have a payment option attached to my phone. If it becomes required, I may have to "retire".

Thanks Marc, much appreciated!!!

Google Authenticator does not require a payment method?

Do you mean creating a Google Play Store account needs a payment method attached?

Just doing all we can and playing our role in keeping everyone's data and accounts secure.

The reviews for Google Authenticator don't give a lot of confidence either. :(

That doesn't sound right - I've never been asked for that by the Authenticator app. There's not even a section in the app's settings for payment (not in my iOS version anyway). Are you perhaps confusing things with your overall Google Play account? Or worse, have you by chance downloaded a fake/scam version of the app?

FWIW I prefer the Microsoft Authenticator app. Google Authenticator doesn't have a good account backup/transfer mechanism for the iOS version of the app, so migrating to a new iPhone is always a real pain.

thank you Marc for alerting us. I have had no trouble as i am not with optus. That is a relief StereoNet is safe. I had an issue with instagram not long ago, i ended up with all these followers, i have since changed the password and phone for that account.

For anyone needing help, there's lots of YouTube guides.

Here's just one I quickly found:

Sadly, where I live, there is little to no mobile phone reception, so does that rule me out of using this 2FA solution?

I use a 2 step authentication app  called AUTHY.

Try authy.com  there is a direct download tab for mac, windows or Linux.  Dont know what the desktop app is like but worth exploring.

I use this on my phone but you will have to do the Google play to download.

Unfortunately Authy is not compatible with our servers at this time.

Google Authenticator is the only 2FA we can adopt for now.

The Authenticator app doesn't require cellular reception, only data.

So as long as your phone is within WiFi range, you would be fine.

Righto. Thank you!

Ah, you're right. It was Google Play asking for this stuff - so I could skip it.

I have successfully logged out and back in using it?  Maybe a false positive ie it doesn't work as you say.

Google Authenticator is fine -

we use it at work for Government websites etc.

I have had it set up for SNA for a few months now - no issues and no payments are ever required.

LastPass and 1Password are also good.

If you want free, there is KeePass (or on Mac, KeepassXC).  It's a bit of a faff to set up, but you can arrange to get your password vault shared across to mobile devices (eg. Keepassium on an iPhone) as well.

Setup one long password. Do not worry about password complexity. Make it memorable. eg horses-PLANES-houses-grass76 - is almost uncrackable. Save your emergency access kit some where safe, this is serious, if you lose it your passwords are gone.

MFA. Just use it and get use to it.

Use the app for banking and super and shares. Try not to use the website unless there is no other way.

Remember this; if they contact you, its a scam. Never engage, dont even say yes or no with the ones that contact you, just hang up and find the main number and call back. This applies to text messages with the Named Accounts. If they initiate the contact with you, its a scam.

Have been using Keepass for years.   Multiple versions for different systems.  Using KeepassXC on linux, and Keepass2Android on my phone.  Databases fully compatible, can just copy them from one device to another to update.

Actually to use it in it's basic form, just install and use it, no faff at all.  I manually copy the updated database to my other devices, and never try to use it to fill in passwords automatically, so no integration needed.
